Civil Ceremony in Toronto!?

does anyone know if we can just simply get a marriage license and sign the papers to be legally married in Canada(Toronto area)? or do we have to have a ceremony too ? I really really REALLY don't want to do a ceremony here, I just want to get the legalities out of the way so we can have our wedding in Cabo. I guess I can call City Hall but they're closed and I'm impatient! lol! help?!?

Im pretty sure all you have to do is apply for a marriage license. When you get that you can go to city hall and get a JP to marry you. Done and done. Then you're all legally married for Cabo! All the legal stuff to get married in Ontario is on our government website.

I just called Toronto City Hall about this the other day. The lady told me that you have to get a marriage licence application form, fill it out and take it to a place that issues marriage licences. We are going to the civic center in Etobicoke. Then you take that licence to where you want to get married (in our case City Hall) and they will do it. They have to do a certain amount of the ceremony text for it to be considered ligit. You cant just sign the papers, I asked. They are really busy on Saturdays, so if you are sticky about what day you want to have an appointment, Ide call ahead and book.

I will be doing this in a month so I can let you know how it goes if you like. I also would prefer to just sign some papers, but its kinda like taking an oath I guess. We are thinking about doing it when we get back from Mexico so it doesnt take away from the wedding there.

We didn't want to do the whole vows and everything here, either - just sign the paperwork and not make any kind of deal of it. I found an officiant that is willing to work with us as much as possible for this - I guess she does this for lots of destination brides. She's outside of the GTA (here in London) but maybe there is someone like her closer to you, Ana??

This is what she wrote to me in an email when I asked her about her services for destination couples:

 

"Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and thank you for your interest in my services. I would be pleased to perform a legal ceremony for you. I have been performing such ceremonies for the past two years as it has been costing, on average, $900-1200 for the legal requirements alone from countries such as Mexico. Couples doing a legal ceremony with me often do not wish to exchange rings or even vows, opting to keep that for their day in the other country. Often they come only with their witnesses.

 

I have a few fee structures to give you an idea of what you can choose. If you come to my home for the above, it is $75. If I go to any other location in London it is $100."
