Go through customs twice?

We're looking at flying from St. Lucia to Punta Cana with a layover in San Juan. Will we have to go through customs in both San Juan and Punta Cana? Thanks in advance.

We didn't have to when we went from Dallas to Regina to Saskatoon. Are you getting off the plane or is it the same plane just a pick up? I think if you stay on the same plane you don't have to. But if you switch planes you do

every time you leave one country and enter another you have to clear customs. if i'm not mistaken, this actually a worldwide procedure that applies to ANY country-to-country travel by air.

Thanks everyone. (And sorry I put customers in the title. I always do that when I want to write customs.) I figured we'd have to do it in each country, but just wanted to double check. That's annoying when the second flight is less than an hour.
