Just the 2 of you DW - who's done it?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, we are going away to Mexico to get married, just the two of us! We want it to be special and intimate to us. We thought long and hard about having a wedding here at home, but decided that marriage is just about us and how we feel about each other so decided to go it alone. we are having a party when we get back for our family and friends to celebrate with us. Don't feel guilty at all about doing it this way.

Only FI Dad and SM has booked. So it wont be just the two of us but we think it will feel similar. I have seen beautiful pictures and chatted with other brides that did it. They loved it. I would do it in a heartbeat and if you aren't satisfied, have a AHR or small Church Ceremony/Blessing.

I say go to a place where both of you really want to go to and never went to before.

The best thing about planning my wedding is that I don't care who could afford going or not or didnt want to travel so far, and if no one came I would still be getting married in Fiji. This marriage is about us.

I was married before so I know both sides of the coin. When Jay & I got engaged I was older and wiser. I was over wanting the big party and being the pretty princess. I just wanted a happy marriage with Jay. I didn't want our wedding to be about anyone else but us. We didn't have to think about any one else's limitations or desires. We got to spoil ourselves. Our ceremony was sweet because our officient was speaking to us and advising us about marriage. All too often people tend to get distracted by everything that goes along with a wedding and not realize what a serious and solemn promise you are about to take. Getting married this way alowed me to focus on this and at the same time be relaxed and have fun.

Jay & I even had separate rooms the night before the wedding. I was worried about being lonely before the wedding but I wasn't. I had some quiet time to reflect and I gabbed with our photographer. I really didn't miss the stuff that goes along with a traditional wedding. We had a small reception when we got home and it was great. You can have it both ways by doing this. I read in a book about elopement that people who elope never regret it and that romance rarely includes large groups. It's so exciting too that the world is your oyster re: the planning and location. Enjoy!!

FI and I wanted to go this route, but my parents would kill me! I think it would be SO romantic and special to do a just the 2 of you wedding. And you can pick anywhere in the world you want!!!

with this kind of wedding, picking BM dresses is out, but you can bring all your closest friends shopping with you for your wedding dress and you could still do DIY wedding announcements! and definitely consider an at home reception after you get back so you can be the pretty princess and celebrate with your friends and family. Even if FIs parents still can't be there, it won't feel like quite an absence since technically its just a party.

good luck and keep us up to date on what you decide!!!

  • 1 year later...

I am glad to see other people doing this as well! I was wondering if my FI and I were the only ones! Our plan so far is this-

We got engaged at SRC in Jamaica just a month ago, in April. It was our 3rd year back there, and since it is such a special place for just "us" we knew that was where we wanted to get married. I have always known planning a big wedding at home and spending a ton of money was not for me. I think having a private wedding will make us even more focused on what the day is about, and not trying to accommodate our families. We also have huge families, so an actual wedding would get huge and out of control fast!

I am really getting even more excited about our private ceremony thanks to this thread!! Marriage is about 2 people committing their lives to each other :)

I am also excited about our AHR we are planning. We have family in NJ, as well as all through New England. So I am hoping to rent a huge lakehouse in the Catskills. We will have it for a couple days prior to the party to prep, have the party on Sat for about 100 guests. Then maybe just our immediate families will spend the night and we can all have breakfast together the next morning. And hopefully if we can take the time off from work, (my FI and I own a magic and costume shop together www.thewonderfunshop.com) we can stay a couple days extra, just the two of us.

So I say, go for it! I hope it turns out beautifully for you!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
