Why don't you "serenade" with a special dance? I think that would be so romantic!

One of my girlfriends is a dancer and at their wedding reception, she performed a solo dance just for him. The groom sat in a chair and she danced around him and he looked on cloud 9! This way, he won't feel pressured to perform, but you still get a choreographed beautiful and romantic dance. This is my suggestion!

I personally would just start the first dance and then have others join you about half way through. I couldn't ask my FI to embarrass himself by trying to learn something he isn't sure he could do. I know I sure as hell would not try to learn something I suck at and then do it in front of everyone- like do a duet song or something. No one would want to listen to me sing, unless I was drunk.

I really like the idea of you dancing with him at home to help him ... but i say maybe try to work it into something .... light the candles, have some wine, let him think it's a just a fun, speical night at home for the two of you .. and then casually help him dance a little. Maybe you can get him to loosen up that way in due time you'll have him comfy enough to do the first dance! I understand why you don't want to miss out on that!

          Good luck!
          Lisa

            LOL Rachel.......

Honestly, I don't want others joing in.....I feel that our first dance is a special, intimate moment about US and nobody else. When we hear this song, we want to think about us and not other people jumping in.

I love Gionne's idea! That gives you what you want, without making FI do something he doesn't want. Wonder if there are any youtube videos that you could show him, so he can see what it would look like...

hmmmm......off to search youtube right now.

but carly, I don't want the traditional, standard box trot type of formal dance. I just want him to loosen up and do some different steps every now and again.

I think LSWiener had a good idea........get him drunk and then start dance class........LOL

Tequila works wonders for getting men to be willing to dance.

It sure helped me on our wedding day.

You just have to find the right amount to drink. That is the difference between dancing and flailing around punching & kicking everyone.

I really wanted a choreographed dance, but FI is so not a dancer. He does pretty well with the sway and the dip. He's so big I don't think he's very comfortable with his body. We joked that we would get a wheely stool, like at the doctor's office and he could spin me around on the dance floor!

And as far as my guests or friends, half of them haven't even rsvp'd yet, and I'm not having a bridal party, so no BM or MOH.....and plus, there is no one else that I'd rather dance with other than my FI.
I didn't mean skip having a first dance. I meant skip having it be a big production. If he is really uncomfortable with it you don't want to make him miserable on his wedding day. I've talked to many grooms who were so stressed about the first dance. I would hate to have something on my wedding day I was dreading doing.

I like the seranade idea. Post some cool videos if you find them.
