I'm lucky enough to live in Washington, DC....I went to the Dominican Consulate today, and they informed me that they NO LONGER do legalizations (as of 9/1/09). So now, I'm stumped as to what to do.....any suggestionshuh.gif

get your single status affidavit (english) notarized by a lawyer.

Send to WEDO:

original SSA

photocopy of SSA

PHOTOCOPY of birth certificate & Passport. NOT the originals

They will send the documents to the Embassy where they will LEGALIZE the translated version of the SSA, and stamp all other copies of the documents.

Fax a copy to your resort about a month before you arrive

WEDO will mail you all the documents back (including what you sent them)

BRING ALL DOCUMENTS WITH YOU TO THE RESORT.

I'm from Canada, did this with WEDO, got married last week, and everything was fine. I paid the $300

I'm from the US and I used WEDO out of Houston, Tx for my wedding in March. It was all legal...I have my DR marriage certificate and a legally translated version that I used to change my name on my SSN with no problem.

For the Canadian brides out there - once you return home with the marriage certificate, do you have to pay anything to make it legal in Canada. My dad told me it costs $2000... i can't believe that its true.

Can someone clarify?

I believe you just need it translated and not legalized. WEDO will do it ofr $85.

$2000 is for changing your name.. at least here in montreal the woman keeps their name, and if they want to take their husbands name you have to pay to change it, like any other name.. at the cost for that is $2000

Because it's already legal you just have to translate it, maybe even get it notorized.. not sure tho.. Have to def look into it

$2000 to change your name? I'm a little confused sad.gif I've never heard of something like that. Who do we pay to change our names?

Question: How far in advance to you send the documents to WEDO? I've heard you can't do it until 3 months till the wedding date. We are 8 months away...how soon should we do this?

Your single affadavit (sp?) is only valid for 3 months from the time you sign it, so there is no point in starting the process any earlier than 3 months. We didn't go through WEDO, but 3 months is plenty of time.

Since you live in TO, it's probably worth your while just to go directly to the Dominican Consulate to get it done. That's what we did. We just went to the consulate office with our birth certificates, unsigned single affadavits (you have to sign it in front of them if I remember correctly), passports & copies of our witness's passports. For the affadavit, I've attached the word document here - just fill in your information. The Dominican consulate will then mail you your translated documents. If you have any other questions about it, just let me know. I'll see what I can remember!! :)

Oh...and I found the website for fees. It's $360 US...but I think some resorts require legalized documents which I think we paid an extra $200. We heard that our resort didn't require legalized docs, but we didn't want to chance it. We paid the $200 just in case!

Here's the addy...

Dominican Republic General Consulate - Toronto

347 Bay St. Suite 904

Toronto, Ontario M5H 2R7

Phone: (416) 369 - 0403/1602 Fax: (416) 369 - 1685

Oh...and I didn't register my marriage here in Ontario. I've asked around & it seems like you don't have to. And I went to a translator at a multicultural center to get my marriage certificate translated & didn't have any problems changing my name over. And I only paid the translator $35 - not the ridiculous $100+ that some online translators will charge!!

Thanks for the information! That's why I love this site! So great to have the experience of brides who have gone through the process! I think I'll just take it to the consulate...I was humming and hawing about whether to go through the process or just get married here first but I really think there is something special about your wedding day being the real day to become husband and wife! Thanks again for your help!

    • I’m getting married in six months to my foreign girlfriend. I was advised by a friend that one of the things I need to do before saying I do is to get a prenuptial agreement. Basically it’s supposed to protect my assets and properties in case my relationship with my future wife goes down the drain. I don’t know though if this is an acceptable practice when marrying Kiev ladies. I don’t want to do it if it would be insulting on her end. I need advice on this. Please help me.
    • So we are currently looking for an all inclusive resort for the wedding. We have 60 guests and found all the Dreams resorts as options and all of them gave us a quote and discounted price since it’s off season etc. Resorts in Punta Canta gave us a reasonable price, Dominicus gave us a really good deal then La Romana Resort and Spa gave us their regular price and so hard to negotiate. Will someone tell us how special is this resort that they won’t give us a good discount when all my guests are staying in their resort for 5-8 days. We are bringing $$$ in their resort and not give us a discount?  What is so special with this resort?  Can somebody recommend a beautiful resort?
