When we were deciding where to go we read about the hotel closures in Tulum in July and our travel agent assured us that DT was not in question. Well, here we are a few months later and maybe it's related, maybe not, but we are stuck in this debacle.

I just received the following message from AMResorts to my travel agent this morning (10/21/0cool.gif. My travel agent also said she spoke on the phone with Christie Gonzalez, the Midwest Sales Representative of AMResorts (owner of all Dreams and Secret's properties), who has advised that by tomorrow they may have a definitive answer of their reopening.

Here is the email Marcie (my travel Agent) received:

    Dear Marcie:

I understand you have been in contact with our Regional Sales Manager,
Christie Gonzalez regarding your wedding at Dreams Tulum November 15. The
issue in Tulum has caused frustrations and I completely understand as I also
have the similar frustrations given our current situation with this hotel.
Our attorneys in Mexico are on top of this situation, however information is
not as concrete as we prefer as working with the authorities in Mexico is
quite difficult and our situation is completely political, nothing more. We
are not in violation within any of our grounds and share no similarities
with respects to our hotel neighbors, despite what some news has reported. I
would like to advise that guests will be back at the resort starting
tomorrow or next week, however we don't have definitive information from the
authorities of that possibility. We can only make decisions for the short
term as we are optimistic Dreams Tulum will be back accepting guests very
soon. We have reports that Eurostar Tulum is back open and that is very good
news. We made the decision yesterday to protect guests up through November
15 at any of our other properties in Dreams Cancun and Secrets Silversands.
Since weddings are more tedious and require difficult operations due to
different jurisdictions, we are making necessary protection for all weddings
through November 30. We do have quite an amount of weddings in October and
November and our hotel staff, as well as hotel staff brought in from our
other resorts, are in the process contacting each one by one with protection
plans. I will also personally contact our weddings/sales personnel at Dreams
Tulum with regards to your wedding group for follow up.
Please feel free to let me know of any questions and I am happy to assist.
    Thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

    Matthew J. Mullen
    Senior Director of Sales
    AMResorts

Through Nov 30?!?!? Great, that means me. Glad to hear it from a third party. The soap continues.

So frustrating. But it sounded like we are going to get moved, they just have not gotten to us yet.
Well, I know just how frustrating it is but we've got to remember it must be A LOT OF WORK to relocate not only brides but ALL of their guests. But I do agree, the waiting just sucks! I'm just kind of accepting the fact we will be moved. So I spent the morning emailing the Paradisus and a handful of other hotels to see if they have my date available. I know Dreams Cancun only has a 2pm space available for me and I can't get married that early. I still have guests coming in the day of my wedding!!

Im not saying its not a nice resort, it is just so far from what we wanted and paid for. I cant deal with this disappointment so close to the wedding.
I'm sooo sorry. And I know exactly how you feel. I, under no circumstances, will want to go to Dreams Cancun. No way, no how. smile27.gif

I picked Dreams Tulum because of the chapel. And Cancun is waaaay to party city for me and my group. Have you tried reaching out to Daniel or Landy and asking them if they can switch you to perhaps the Paradisus or another resort away from Cancun?? I don't appreciate the fact they just switched you without your consent. It may happen to the rest of us! Keep truckin'.... and I'm the type of girl that won't take no for an answer. So keep fighting and see if they can switch you to another resort. In my opinion the Paradisus is much, much better than Dreams Cancun. Let us know how we can help. Hang in there!

My question is....what happens if the resort does not re-open? Are they bound by anythng to me or my guests to make sure that we are taken care ofhuh.gif?? my guess would be no....

Are there any of you December brides out there worring about the same thing
They are bound by your reservations. I'm sure you've booked your room already, right? And most of your guests have booked too? That's what they consider as a contract.
I personally, haven't paid a $$ related to my wedding. I've only paid my weeks stay at the resort. I wouldn't worry abou it.
  5. I was sooo nervous too! I actually told my FH that if he was going to sit on the couch with me he wasn't allowed to give ANY comments or say a word about the show! (He usually makes fun of it all!).

He was surprisingly well behaved tonight. Kenley could've taken a lesson from him.

Did you hear her say "I guess I should've talked better to him" when they announced Tim Gunn was the guest judge??

SO GLAD SHE DIDN'T WIN! And besides, I wouldn't wear anything she showed down the runway.

  6. Here's the latest on the closures according to several MX newspapers.

The government has agreed to allow one hotel of the 14 to re-open. Eurostar Blue Tulum can now open it's doors after the hotel owners admitted in court they built more rooms/buildings than the law allowed. The "confession" allows the Eurostar to re-open with the promise they will tear down one building, or 52 rooms. The hotel will essentially go to half its current size, from 96 guest rooms to 44.

Now, the articles didn't say anything about the rest of the hotels other than they remain closed by government order.

Not sure how to interpret this.

Does it mean that with time more and more hotels will re-open? Not sure. But hey, it's a start!

  7. Carina, I'm sooo glad you feel better about the situation. I visited the Paradisus during my site visit and you will love it! It's gorgeous and SO MUCH CLOSER TO THE AIRPORT!! Also, I know for a fact they only allow one wedding per day so don't worry about being crammed into a small corner. They have a private beach area for the wedding and a private terrace available for the reception.

You're going to love it and I'm sure you're just glad to have a definitive answer!

Oh, and congrats on becoming a MRS this week! My FH are trying to pinpoint a date for our legal ceremony as we speak!

I replied to Sandra's e-mail a few days ago, and she has yet to reply (which is to be expected...considering all the drama)

about 50% of my guests book thru expedia. Incuding FH and I! We have yet to receive a phone call either. I hope they do get in touch with us soon though...

Does any one know what our options are? besides Dreams Cancun? (not an option for us) and Secrets Silversands?

any other resorts at this point in time Dreams Tulum has mentioned sending you and your wedding party?

Dreams Cancun is super beautiful. And they put on great weddings. But I dont want to be staying in Cancun. The Mayan Riviera is were we want to stay. All our wedding related activities are in the Mayan. And we dont want to be surrounded by all the Cancun party goers... argh!

THANKS LADIES!!!!! without this forum, I would be a disaster. Even though FH says I am regardless wink.gif

I wouldn't give up just yet! Her email talked about a plan B just in case we need it. They're hoping to reopen Nov. 1. But again that is their hope. I don't believe in dates. It's either going to happen or its not but I don't think it's right for them to give people definitive dates since each date so far has fallen through. The 6th, the 13th, the 31st. I don't buy any of those dates.
From what I understand, the court ruling could be any day. Either today, next month or next year. What I would strongly advise is to create a back-up plan. That's what Sandra and I are working on.
I know they are offering Dreams Cancun, Silversands and Barcelo Maya.
Go on to their websites, look at their pictures and see which one fits you. And I do believe it's best to let them know what your preference is ASAP so they can start doing all the legwork in case its necessary.

Remember why most of us picked a destination wedding? Easy, stress-free.
Yeah, not for us DT brides!

I am not sure what to tell them. I thought Dreams was going to re-book all of our guests, regardless of how they booked. I will call tomorrow and post what I find out.

I got an email from Sandra yesterday. She told me they would re-book all of our guests to the new resort and they would pay the $$ difference (if there is one) . So I wouldn't rebook with expedia. Plus, are you 100% sure of what hotel they are re-directing you to? I know its tough, especially if you have antsy guests hounding you for answers, but I suggest you wait and let DT take care of it.
