Erin, thanks for sharing the progress of your custom dress. It's so exciting and interesting to see how it's all made. So far your dress looks beautiful, I love the silhouette. Plus, in the end, it will be customized to what you want. Can't wait to see the end result. Please keep us posted

P.S. I hope you've had a wonderful holiday season and an awesome start to the new year

Well, we are 95 days out from our wedding and exactly 3 months from our travel day. Whoo-hoo! I feel fairly in control at this point, but I'm also not doing a lot compared to most DW brides (no OOT bags, minimal decor, etc.). But I realized that we have not thought out some logistical stuff, so we did that this weekend.

Timeline

Our wedding ceremony is scheduled for 4pm. Then we have a cocktail hour and then the dinner/dance reception which is 3 hours. We had already decided not to pay to extend this, but head to the club instead. However, if we did this all in a row, it would mean we would end at 8:30, which seems really early! So I think we will do this:

3:15 First Look (is this enough time before the ceremony?)

4:00 Ceremony

4:30 Photos, guests are on their own - the lobby bar is close by

5:30 Cocktail hour

6:30 Dinner

9:30 Move to the club for anyone who wants to keep going (I will actually try to stay at our reception location as long as possible - they'll have to kick us out!). We have an older group, so I don't think too many will mind wrapping early.

Has anyone done this with a break between the ceremony and cocktail hour? Did anyone complain (or disappear and not come back?!?)?

Reception Details

We've asked my BIL to be our MC. I think he will accept (he is just trying to sort out childcare for his kids, since my sister is also in my wedding party).

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the traditional things that are generally done at wedding receptions, so I'm trying to figure out how to modify the events without disappointing people who might appreciate them.

  • Receiving line: Nope. Not doing it. We're spending a whole week with these people, so it's not our one and only chance to speak to them personally. Will do our best to mingle at all events.
  • Speeches: Ugh. I think we will keep the main ones. MC intro, best man, maid of honour (although I have never actually selected one of my BMs as my maid of honour - I only have 2, my sister & my best friend, how to decide?), my parents, us. Does that cover the major speeches?
  • Dances: Ugh again. I think we will do these after dinner and keep them short. Maybe our first dance is only half a song and then we bring in the parents? Any suggestions? It seems like you are supposed to do this after the first course, but that seems awkward to me.
  • Bouquet/garter toss: Not doing these. We have a total of 2 single people (not counting children) attending. I think it would be awkward.
  • Cake cutting: For some reason I am okay with this (maybe because it involves cake ;)), so we will do it toward the end of the reception.

Gifts

I sort of forgot that we are supposed to get gifts for important people in our wedding/families. Oops. So I guess we need to figure this out and get shopping.

  • Bridemaids x 2: I have a robe for each of them, but thinking this is not enough (I haven't paid for their dresses or anything). Neither of them really wear jewelry other than the "real" (and expensive) stuff they already have, and I don't care if they have matching jewelry for the ceremony. I'm thinking perfume?
  • Groomsmen x 2: We have a Chive bottle opener & flask for each of them. Jeff is going to get these engraved and thinks this is sufficient.
  • Parents: I have NO idea what to get them. Golf stuff for the dads maybe?
  • Musician: A friend of ours is playing the sax for the processional & recessional. I should probably get him something?
  • Have I missed anyone? Our photographer is a friend, but we are also paying him. I think it's a reduced rate from his usual, but seems like a gift on top of that would be weird.

Here is my to-do list for the next month or so:

  • Finalize day/reception timeline
  • Confirm MC
  • Let people know if they are expected to give speeches
  • Figure out a plan for gifts & start buying them
  • Get Jeff's ring resized
  • Pick a date & location for our legal wedding
  • Find an officiant for legal wedding
  • Work on a welcome letter (would love any templates or examples you can share)
  • Get fans ordered - thinking of doing this for the ceremony. I don't really have a burning need for a program (it's more about keeping guests cool) but I really like the looks of these from Etsy:

Phew! I guess I had better get started!

I think think there have been many brides on here who send the guests to the bar during photos. Don't think anyone has ever posted a negative response.

I think 45 mins is enough time given you are doing photos after the ceremony!

We did photobooks after the wedding for all our parents. Seemed more practical to me than something cheesy. Groupon always has photo book Canada ones and they are fantastic quality.

I think your groomsmen gifts are great. Maybe do another something little for the girls. Maybe a little travel kit? Or shoes for the wedding? Or sunglasses? Just throwing out ideas lol

Thanks for the feedback & suggestions, Kim. I hadn't thought about a photobook, since I was thinking we should give them something AT the wedding. Did you give your parents anything small so they didn't feel like they were being "ignored" or did you tell them they would get a photobook later (or neither)? I love the idea.

No I did not. I wouldn't have even thought they should get a gift if it hadn't have been for this site. I asked my sisters and friends and no one did it lol.
I doubt your parents will be offended. I think ours were more shocked we sent them something. Maybe because we aren't traditional?? Not really sure the 'history' behind giving gifts to the family. Not sure if it depends who pays for the wedding?

@vancouverpetunia I just had to catch-up on your thread - everything is looking great!  You seem very on track!

I think your timeline is very reasonable and organized.

The gifts thing can get tricky.  I paid for my girls dresses and got them each a pandora charm since they both have the bracelets.  Perfume is a nice gift, I would be my usual paranoid self and worry about it breaking or spilling in transit. hmmm is there something sentimental you could do for them?  I'm trying to think of some options that will travel well.  I'll get back to you  :)  The groomsmens gifts sounds great!  I didn't think about getting the parents anything - I was planning on making photo albums after the wedding as well.

And your fans are super cute!!!

@calgarybride2015 Good points. My sister did give my parents a gift around her wedding (although I don't think they've ever used it!). I don't know if Jeff's sister did as well. My parents are contributing some money to the wedding; his are not, but that's because they bailed him out of a financial situation a few years back, so that was his "wedding fund". Neither of our parents seem like the types that would be offended, now that I think of it. But maybe we could write them a note thanking them for their support and letting them know that they will get a surprise later on or something...

@deecol Please let me know if you have any ideas for the girls. Yeah, the perfume could be a bit of an issue in terms of travel. I wasn't so much worried about getting it there, but I don't know if they will be checking luggage to go home or carrying on. Probably checking, as they both have kids, but you never know. I could pay for their make-up and/or hair at the resort, but that would come to $160 USD each if I did both, which is quite a lot.

I love those fans! So cute! And so fitting!

I think your timeline looks great! I've been working on mine also :S makes it so real Hahaha!

For gifts go with something small. I did jewelry for the bridesmaids, mothers, maid of honor. Cuff links for the dads, and the groomsmen we are looking at golf stuff

Ladies... sh*t just got real:

Attached File  IMG_2027.JPG   73.34KB   10 downloads

Now we just have to figure out the plans for the legal wedding!  I think we have picked out a restaurant that is on the water in Vancouver, with the Seawall in front of it. If the weather is nice, we could do it outside. If not, they have a little Juliette balcony from their second floor that overlooks the restaurant that would be very cute. I went to the restaurant in December and they said they would be happy to have us come in 30 mins before they open, so that we could have privacy. And then we would stay for an early dinner. But Jeff hasn't been to the place yet and he wants to check it out, so we have reservations for Feb 6. It will just be me, Jeff, his best man and his girlfriend. Still have to find an officiant, but I think we will do a Sunday, so there should be lots to choose from and I'm really not that fussy about who they are or what they're like. Quick in & out.

Onto other updates (warning - it's long)...

Dress

Also in the "getting real" category, I pick up my dress tonight! Yikes. I haven't seen any photos since the last one I posted, so fingers crossed. I don't think I will be able to try it on at the dressmaker's, so it may be a few days before I can post any photos. Unfortunately she doesn't do fittings or alterations. It is what it is and if I need anything changed, I have to do that on my own.

Bachelorette Party

This is planned for Feb 20. My bridesmaids don't live here, so two friends are planning it. I don't really know who's attending, although I do know that my BM who lives in Portland, OR is making the trip up for the weekend, so that's very exciting. I asked them to invite most of the women invited to the wedding - I left out the older ladies (aunts, etc.) and a few who are on Jeff's side who I don't know all that well. I've asked to keep it low key. It sounds like there will be something earlier and something later in the day, so maybe a spa day followed by dinner? Not sure. They are being very hush hush.

Bridal Shower

My cousin has kindly offered to throw me a shower. I'm not sure what to think about that. Honestly, I didn't really want either a bachelorette party or a shower. I don't really like being in the spotlight and I don't want people to spend even more money when so many of them are going to Mexico. Plus, for the shower, we have pretty much everything we need, not to mention, nowhere to put anything else! That said, my cousin suggested a "wine & spice" theme. Not sure what the spice part is - food or lingerie? LOL. But the wine part sounds good to me!

So, I assuming I go ahead with this, who should I invite? I was thinking this would be great for the older/family ladies to attend. But for everyone else, I'm not sure. I feel like I'd rather have those NOT coming to the wedding, since they aren't spending the big bucks to come. But then it would be a great opportunity for those who ARE coming to the wedding to get to know each other. Any suggestions? I'm not sure what is "proper" etiquette.

Stationery

I have found a company that will do custom artwork for all of my stationery for very cheap! They come highly recommended from FB group I'm in, so fingers crossed. I've asked them do everything in a Mexican/papel picado theme in our colors, so: welcome letter, mad libs card (in lieu of a guest book), program fan (decided to go with all matching stuff rather than do the one I posted previously, although I really liked that one), escort cards & table numbers. I think I can get away without a seating chart/placecards. We'll just include the table number on the escort card - I don't plan to assign actual seats. I'll let you know how they turn out.

Hair & Makeup

A friend of mine was supposed to do my make-up and possibly my hair (she's a trained make-up artist, and can do basic hair, but I only wanted basic). Unfortunately, she and her husband have decided they cannot make it (that takes us down to 39 guests, including kids). They have some financial issues right now and they would be coming all the way from Australia, so I can't say I blame them. But I'm disappointed, of course, especially because my wedding was going to a mini-reunion for a group of us who now live in Vancouver, Toronto & Sydney. But what can you do?

Luckily, I have hair & make-up included at the resort salon as part of my package. So my friend has sent me some make-up suggestions with more to come (these are pinky-brown smoke, apparently, and she's also going to send some that are more purple).

Attached File  bridal-makeup-look 2.jpg   10.38KB   10 downloads

Attached File  bridal-makeup-look 3.jpg   26.21KB   10 downloads

I'm busily pinning hair photos. I have an angled bob (short at the back & longer at the front) - actually very similar to the make-up shot above. So I'm somewhat limited in my options. Plus it is is poker straight without a lot of body. I do want it off my face, at least partially, in case it's windy. I love the look below, but I don't know if my hair will hold the curl (it doesn't really hold a curl at the best of times, but does puff up a bit in the humidity so maybe?). Can anyone speak from experience? Or have other suggestions?

Attached File  hair 1.JPG   52.48KB   10 downloads

I'm not sure what to do for my BMs. I don't know if either will want hair and/or make-up done at the salon. I would like to offer to pay, but it's $160 USD each for both services. Would it be tacky to tell them they can pick one and I will pay for it? If they want the other, they'll have to pay for it themselves? Haven't paid for any part of their outfit, and I don't really have a gift for them yet. Just a getting ready robe.

Other

  • We booked the golf excursion for the guys. It's the day before the wedding and I've told the groomsmen that I will KILL them with my bare hands if Jeff is hungover for our wedding day (he is the worst with hangovers).
  • Jeff's ring is in for resizing.
  • Our MC is confirmed.

Next Up

Well, we're now 75 days out from the wedding day, so it's getting to crunch time. Here's what we have to get done next:

  • Rings engraved
  • Legal ceremony booked
  • Figure out & book spa appts
  • Get local appts booked: nails, waxing/laser (hair already done)
  • Sort out beauty stuff: tanning (HELP! I know nothing about tanning) & teeth whitening
  • Figure out any gifts for parents/wedding party, etc.
  • Finalize & ask people to give speeches

@vancouverpetunia ok catching up.... I can't believe I've missed so much!! Countdown is on!!

I love your dress design!! It's so pretty and will be wonderful for an April Mexico wedding!! The lace is gorgeous!!! Can't wait to see it complete!! Those hair and makeup styles are beautiful! I do really like the last one - can you do any kind of trial either before you go or once there to see how the curls "curl up" and how long they last? Even without humidity you might get an idea of how well they want to "stay" and then see from there? I love the girls dresses and the colour will totally pop!

I haven't heard of parent gifts but we did photobooks and both sets loved them, plus we bought actual small albums and had 200 prints made and set up a full album for my dad and Dougs parents. They all enjoyed them. I know what you said about BM jewellery it what about going with something like that "just for the wedding" like pearls? With only 2 you could get something a little nicer maybe and it's something that can always be worn again. Just a thought.... Or shoes as Kim suggested. I like that idea too.

I like your legal ceremony plan. Sounds very sweet and romantic and..... Simple!! Your to do lists are totally doable and I agree with Dee - you're so together with everything and so calm!! My vote with the bachelorette and shower - if people want to be happy for you, go for it! Enjoy it!! As to who to invite I like the idea of everyone so that everyone gets to know each other!!

So if the guys get a golf day what do the ladies get?? It really should be fair you know... lol

You've got this Erin! You know exactly what you want and you're completely organized! Not long to go!! Very much Looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing pics!!! If you can go check out the GTA Brides Meet up thread. Something interesting possible happening.....

I said "yes" again to the love of my life at Grand Coral Beach Club, Playa del Carmen, Mexico on our 4th anniversary - October 20, 2015
