Moving Tips?

Jessica

Recommended Posts

I just closed on our house today and we move in Saturday...so I am in the same boat.

I definitely feel overwhelmed by all the boxes in my apartment and inability to find things quickly. I really liked all the suggestions given.

We hired movers and got three of my FI's friends to help. The hired movers will be used to move the heavy stuff, frig, bed, etc. I too am a control freak and would like my house to be completely ready by the following weekend. Yes, I know I am being ambitious, but that is how I am. :)

Good luck Jessica! Enjoy your new place.

my advice? don't move.

i HATE moving.

but...my real advice would be to put all boxes in one room (someone else said that too) so you're not always surrounded by boxes; also so if you're painting, you don't have to keep moving them. i'd paint immediately, unless you can live w/ whatever's on the walls - but like you said, it'll be hard w/ a newborn. oh, and STOCK UP on rollers, brushes, stirrers, etc., b/c it really sucks when you have to stop painting to go to home depot AGAIN. we used to take nightly home depot trips - ugh.

good luck - and if you ever need to refi in nj, i know a great broker wink.gif

You know, I never considered putting all the boxes into a spare room, but that's a great idea. I don't think I'll get around to painting the living room/dining room before we move in and plu sI want to pull out the carpet in there. Also Aiden's room we might not get around to before we start moving in boxes. Hmmm, I think I'll do that so then I can paint in the next few weeks (wearing a mask of course!) even if DH isn't there instead of waiting for him to move boxes out for me.

Thanks for the ideas girls!

Oh geez, I hate to admit this but we moved out of our apt. 10 months ago and some of our stuff is STILL not unpacked!! smile41.gif To our defense, we have zero shelving and very little storage. However we just need to break down and buy some bookshelves! Most of the stuff still packed away is books, games, etc. but it's taken over our downstairs office/guest bedroom.

Doing everything little by little is a great idea. We had a major fiasco when we moved. They put off closing for 8 months! Eventually we HAD to move out of our place by Jan. 2nd. That meant skipping out on any NYE celebrations and instead staying up all night packing and fixing all the little things we had messed up. After that we had to put our stuff in storage and stay in a hotel for a week. Somehow we pulled through tho. I think that's the biggest thing is to keep up momentum by focusing on the new place and how amazing it's going to be.

Best of luck, you guys are gonna do great! cheer2.gif

hee hee...that's exactly what i did. until, almost a year later, i got tired of explaining to friends who came to see the house why there were still boxes in there. it's great in the beginning, though, bc you're so excited to show the place off and you can have most of it totally in order and just 1 room that's complete chaos. also, if you happen to need 1 thing but have to open about 6 boxes to find it whose contents are then strewn all over the place it's pretty easy to just close the door and walk away happy with your 1 thing wink.gif

the thing you have to realize, if you put it all in one room, is that if you've lived w/o it for a few months, you probably can toss or donate it. we have one box left (we moved 15 months ago) filled with stuff to sell on ebay and random crap...i may just toss the whole box (before this weekend b/c i'm having family over after my shower!)

be careful lifting and painting - don't paint the ceilings, have DH do that...AND CONGRATS!
