I think it really depends on the size of your wedding.  We were just married this May on St. Thomas.  We hosted 50 guests at a private villa and had our ceremony on the beach.  We made a visit to the island beforehand, which gave us the opportunity to look around at different resorts for guests, see different beach options for our ceremony, meet our planner beforehand, sample the food from a couple of caterers and bakers, and also to try a few restaurants for our welcome dinner.  If we hadn't gone, we probably would have chosen many things differently and I wouldn't have had any peace of mind.  I imagine we would have gone with the vendors who appeared to be the most popular assuming they were the best.  However, by going there we found the opposite to be true in a few instances...cake and catering namely.  Not only did it save us a little bit, but we had a more personalized service and better quality food.  I don't know if I would have been happy if we didn't go.  So, if you can afford it then go for it!  It will also give you and your fiance a much needed break that I'm sure you deserve.

MY FI and I can't afford a site visit before the wedding, so we're doing all of the planning from here and taking a leap of faith! My feeling is that by the time we arrive there's not going to be a whole lot we can control and I can't sweat the small stuff if something goes wrong. By then I'll just be in vacation mode and enjoying everything. :) I'm reassured because what I've seen and heard of the resort (Secrets St. James) looks great, but it still would be nice to see more info from past brides. Since it's a newish resort there's not a lot out there yet. Just crossing my fingers all goes smoothly and everything is as wonderful as it looks in pictures!

Most of these resorts do SO many of these weddings each day, you can trust that you'll love what you end up with, visit or not! I did do a visit, which was great for determining the food (it was all really good, but we did pick a few things we initially weren't planning to) and the ceremony location. There were some beaches that were more in the public areas that I decided to avoid for the ceremony (to deter gawkers) that I could not tell locations of in pictures. That being said, if you just tell your coordinator what you're looking for, she should be able to get you exactly what you want!

Hey Ladies,

I'm not sure myself but I figure might depend on the circumstances staying at an all inclusive or regular resort vs a private villa or beach home.  Resorts might not necessarily need a visit although would be nice, because they probably offer some sort of packages or list of things to choose from and possibly more choices to have if private villa or home such as caterers and florists etc..

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
