I'm wondering if anyone is thinking twice about getting married in Cancun or the Riviera Maya after the alleged rape of a Canadian woman by Mexican police in Playa del Carmen? I have to admit I am thinking twice about getting married there now. Very, very scary. Please see the news article above.

I dont want to sound out of line saying this BUT all over the world in every country women (& men) get raped...

Unfortunatly this is something that will always happen no matter where in the world.

This is awful & disgusting and I would not wish this on anyone anywhere, but it would not make me change my mind about getting married in Mexico (Playa).

 

I dont want to sound like I dont care because I do, its a horendus thing to have happened ( also with it being the police... the people who are supposed to help) but as i said it unfortunatly it happens everywhere :-( x0x

Just like every other Mexican news story that scares B2B and their guests from travelling to their DW, I think people should always consider that travelling anywhere out of country could be dangerous at any point. Don't put yourself in situations that could be unsafe and familiarize yourself with the laws and restrictions/customs of that country.  You are not in USA or Canada anymore and that means your expectations and actions need to adjust accordingly. Yes, some incidents are unavoidable, but that is life.  Just make smart decisions about you destination(obviously a DW in Mexico City is probably more risky than one in Mayan Riviera!) and then let yourself move on and enjoy your trip.  You'll have enough wedding related issues to stress about, trust me! dizzy.gif

I was in Playa del Carmen when this happened.  I did not hear anything about it until yesterday when it hit the news.  My comments are the same as the poster above.  You must be respectful of the fact that you are not in your own country.  Cultures are different.  Authorities behave differently.  If you do not understand what this means to a travellor, stay home.   I've vacationed in Mexico for the last three years.  I've been "hit on" while we've been off the resort but my fiancee and I have talked about it.  If it happens, I walk away and so does he.   I think it is absolutely horrendous that this happened.  However, who in the name of god in their right mind would argue with authorities (police) in Mexico and think they are going to win said argument.  Reckless is what he was and she paid the price.  But at least he got to assert his position.  Right and wrong does not have the same meaning in every culture.  Here is my advice to anyone planning to get married in any country, not just Mexico: if you plan to get drunk, fight with a local or another tourist no matter the situation, then argue with authorities, stay the hell home because you will surely find yourself in a bad situation.  Just my opinion for whatever it's worth.

      Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010.       Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations.
