Can I book an officiant before I have booked the resort??
I can't book my resort now until either I have 10 people commit to the group package my TA put together, or the individual rates come out in a few months. I'm worried because I am 2 people short, and now one is stepping up to the plate yet. I've heard that there are not a lot of officiants in the DR and I don't want to risk not getting one.
I don't have a specific date or time in mind as long as it is either December 8 or 9th of 2009

I think the officiants have to be booked by the resort if you're having your wedding there, but I don't see why you can't book your wedding with the wedding coordinator prior to having guests committed. We're eloping so it's a bit different, but I still made sure they had my date available and could get an officiant that day before we booked our stay at the resort and pretty much did those two things simultaneously. Does your resort have a guest minimum in order to have a wedding there or something?

Yes, the WC at the resort will take care of that. That is why you have to check with the resort to see which dates are avaiable. It's not the resorts decision - there is typically only 1 officiant available to perform the ceremonies - and he travels to all the Punta Cana resorts ... so your resort will give you dates based on when the officiant is available at your resort.
