Curly Hair Dilemma

Ok… I’m putting the cart before the horse, but I wanted some suggestions on hairstyles (I’m not getting married till next year).

 

I have long naturally curly hair. It has a lot of volume, but really isn’t all that thick (at least not as thick as it used to be). See my profile pic.

 

I was wondering what other curly haired brides were doing for their hair for a DW. I’ve had some REALLY TERRIBLE experiences with local hairdressers and am freaked out by trusting my hair with someone I haven’t “tried out.†If I had a digital photo of my senior high school prom hair-do, 10-years ago, I’d show you. It was absolutely horrible and I should have demanded a refund!

 

My issue with hairstylists is NO ONE seems to know how to care for my hair. Fortunately, I’ve found stylists that are great at cutting it, but they all seem to have this “fabulous†new product that never works. Over the years I’ve found what works for me. I’ve been using Herbal Essences’ curly hair line of mouse for YEARS with great results (at the end of the day it does leave some “flakey-ness†but it controls without too much stiffness). I live in Florida and have to deal with humidity daily, so the islands’ climate shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

 

I was thinking that it would be in my best interest to do my hair normally (which involves natural air drying) before the wedding… then having the hairstylist work with a “stable hair baseâ€. I’m thinking a ½ up, ½ down thing (or some kind of variation) with a flower for shear ease, but would love something different. I ALWAYS wear my hair either down or in a ponytail.

 

This was a long winded post, but I’d appreciate any feedback. THANKS!

I think we have hair from the same head. I love when stylists tell me about this great product that will work for me an never does. Lots of mousse or gel, air dry, and scrunching. I am worried about the wind making my hair go everywhere and get a bit big and frizzy. So I am working on an updo idea with several loose tendrils since we know they will curl.

 

I think I am getting some silk stephanotis to put up in my hair... still not sure...

I also have hair pretty much exactly like yours(color and all). My decision is whether to straighten it and them have them curl it or wear it naturally curly and have them work with my curl. I have had a bad experience with them working with my curl, they just dont know how withouth makieng it FRIZZ or Messy.

I have grown to love and appreciate my curls but am not sure what to do.

Going with an updo to keep hair off my neck and face in the July Mexico heat. I am thinking a low chignon with an orchid on one side.

My hair's not as curly as yours. I've been growing it out so the curls are getting weighed down. I still haven't found a product I really like to use. My biggest problem is frizz. Any curly-headed girls have a suggestion?

 

I'd like to wear my hair down for the wedding, as long as I can get rid of the frizz first.

 

P.S. I'm a real low-maintenance girl.

Hi. I have thin, but very curly hair that is a frizzy mess the second it hits humidity. About a year ago, I switched to the Curlisto line of products and they have made a HUGE difference. My hair is so much more manageable now! They are a little pricey, but even if you can get just one product... the weekly treatment masque is well worth the $. It will do wonders for the condition of your hair.

I have curly hair too. I hated all products until I found Ouidad. I also like curly friends stuff. A friend of mine loves Deva Curl. Ouidad is my favorite visit there web site you fill out a profile and it recommends products for you. Good luck with finding your style.

Sephora is now carrying Living Proof No Frizz. This is a new anti frizz that is getting raves. It was developed by MIT students and controls frizz without serums. I have used it only once this week but got a ton of compliments on it. It was less frizzy but I live in Austin so humidy isn't usually an issue. It also helps repel dirt so I was able to go longer between shampoos (hence only using it once this week).

 

I will keep y'all posted on how it works.

My hair is sort of wavy-curly (Depending on how I dry it I can wear it fairly straight, or quite curly). I find that the best way to avoid frizz with this kind of hair is to straighten it and then curl it (I never actually do this day-to-day b/c it is too much work). I don't know why, but straightening and then curling really seems to help the frizz problem.

For you super curly brides, I would be inclined to do something with your natural curl (sometimes the curl is too powerful to fight!). If you feel you are better with your hair than any hairdresser is, then do some of it yourself! There's no law that a professional hairdresser has to do your whole hair-do (or even do it at all). My sister has straight hair, but one of her only wedding regrets is that she didn't do her hair herself (mind you, she's very good at hair).

Annabelle, I think half up/half down is a good choice, and it'll let you control the structure of your hair, while still allowing your hairdresser to do something fun (maybe some of the tied-back hair could be braided or something).

Edit: I just realized that I left this window open and never actually hit "submit reply", so I'm sorry if this is out of date now that I'm finally hitting send! I started researching frizz after I wrote this though, and discovered a brand new product developed at MIT. I just ordered some and I'll let you know how it goes (here's a link).

looks like my post WAS out of date I'd like to hear updates too...hopefully it goes well since I already ordered mine! I'm heading to the rainy Canadian coast in March so that will be the ultimate test (right now I'm in Arizona, so it's not the best spot). Usually when I step outside in Victoria it takes about 5 minutes before it looks like someone has back-combed my hair, so I'm crossing my fingers that this is a miracle product.

I bought both the curly and straight version for med/thick hair. I used the straight last night but wore my hair curly. So far so good and we have 40mph winds today in Austin. It really controls frizz (an poofiness) with out feeling heavy like serums can do. They also say you can't use too much. I am leaving for Puerto Vallarta tomorrow for a week so this will be a real test for it. I will let everyone know the results when I get back.
