Gran Bahia Principe - Golden Club Junior Suites Akumal

As part of my whealing & dealing....lol....I managed to get all of our group upgraded to the Golden Club Junior suites at the Akumal.  If I had paid for this I don't know if it is really worth it but as a freebie it was wonderful.  We had a completely seperate check in to the main part of the resort, greeted with a champagne cocktail, bathrobes & slippers in all the rooms & all of us in villas closest to the beach. We were in villa 65 AMAZING....right overlooking the beach!!  We were also a stones throw from the main pool, restaurant for breakfast & lunch & last by no means least the 24 hour snack bar where we spent many a night having 'one for the road!!'...The other perk is you get 4 a la cartes a week instead of 3......We checked in with no trouble, walked 2 mins to our room & within 15 mins all our luggage was brought by the bellboy.  Being the bride & groom we also didn't pay for the safe for the duration of our stay.

Akumal Hotel in General

Firstly this resort is HUGE!!....but they have these little buggy cars that go by your rooms every 10 mins to take you wherever you want to go so after a few days the resort does seem 'smaller'. The whole resort is kept immaculate, you see staff everywhere cleaning, watering, pruning etc They are all very friendly & we never encountered any rude staff.  The nature at the resort is fantastic if your into that, lizards running everywhere, exotic birds, pelicans & other animals I can't remember the name of!!  But the kids loved it!!  We were told to leave a small tip if we wanted to for the maid & in our mini fridge for the guy who fills it up,  the maid was fantastic & our room was always very well cleaned but the guy who stocked the mini fridge was a bit hit & miss!!  Somedays we would get lots of stuff others nothing!!  The restaurants are fabulous....buffets have every food you could want & as you can use any of the buffets at all three hotels it really feels like you are going 'out' somewhere different for dinner than lunch.  There are 12 a la cartes that you can use some better than others.....Dolce Vita not so good....Le Gourmet amazing!!.....but I suppose its down to personal taste......the show table at the Japanese was brilliant....all I kept saying is 'how does he do that??!!....Only thing I would say is book your a la cartes as soon as you can, we left a couple of ours too late & only got offered 6pm or 10.30pm.  Evening entertainment there is something for everyone, quite bars through to full on shows.  We loved the shows!!....the children especially enjoyed the circus show & movie show but they were all good fun.  We were going to go into Playa Del Carmen for my hen night but in the end decided to stay in the resort as there was 24 bars to crawl round!!!....Great night!!....There is also a night club in the Hacienda part of the resort but I didn't end up getting there!!

Wedding Day & Coordinator

Well there is nothing more to say than supercalafragalisticexpaladocious!!....from beginning to end I couldn't have asked for more!!  As some of you will know from the forums I am a little bit of a control freak & did have a couple of bridezilla moments in my planning but OMG do these WC's know what they are doing.  I had Jazmin & she was outstanding, I never waited more than 3 days for a reply to any questions, I called her 3 times in resort & she was always very happy to hear from me.  When we arrived there was a letter waiting for us in our room from Jazmin asking us to meet her the following morning to go over the final details.  We both went along with my mum & dad.  Jazmin had every email I had ever sent (100's) all printed out in a file in front of her & just simply confirmed everything we had already confirmed.  We went & had our blood test done & that was it!! She said I will come to your room at 3.45pm on the wedding day to take you to the ceremony!!

The wedding day was really a dream come true.  Me & my mum went to the spa in the morning & had a massage, then we both had our hair done & then our make up....I was so relaxed I nearly fell asleep!!  At 2pm all my little flower girls & bridesmaids arrived & we cracked open the champagne & finished getting ready.  The actual ceremony was perfect, the venue is simply stunning, I definitely recommend the Gazebo over the hammocks....in my opinion it is much prettier & also at the hammocks it is very windy....we could see this location from our balcony & we saw many a bride being blown all over!!......Before we knew it we were husband  & wife....woohoo!!  We then had our cocktail hour right there outside while we had photos done & then at 6.30pm we went to our chosen restaurant for dinner  Le Gran Tortuga.  We did speeches here & cut our cake then on to our poolside reception to party the night away!!  This finished at 11pm & then we all headed back to our good old 24 hour bar for 'one or two for the road'.....Perfect end to a perfect day!!

So thats it girls......all I can say is if you book your wedding at this resort you will not be dissapointed....everything really was a dream come true & all of our 47 guests loved it too....they all said they would go back & no one wanted to go home!!  Jazmin our WC is coming to London in August & we are going to be meeting up with her for dinner that is how thrilled we were with the outcome of our wedding!!  Any questions feel free to pm me, am more than happy to help any bride to be's.  Thank you once again to all my BDW friends xxxx

Lisa, this is a brilliant review. Can you tell me if you needed to pay extra on arrival for your meal for 47 guests? We have booked to get married next September and have 46 guests attending....we have been told the meal will be included, but I am a little nervous of this. Many thanks in advance for your help. xx

I am staying at Akumal in Dec 2012 and have asked for the Gazebo at Tulum! I m intrigued on how you managed the upgrade as I too would love to do this for all our guests so we can use the 24 hr bar! Share your secret please. Was your wedding at the Gazebo Tulum? How did you get there prior to the ceremony? Xx
