Internet Blocker?

I think my work may be trying to crack down on internet usage and I'm getting VERY scared. I just tried going to maggie sottero's website to reply to a thread, but once I tried searching for a particular dress, the screen came up telling me that I was breaking corporate policy and the site is now denied.

What will I do all day if this site gets blocked? I surf the internet all day too and now my day is starting to look pretty bleak. Anyone know about programs like this? It seems like it denies pages after I try to do a search on a website or something.

OH NO! I worry about that all the time. My work is implementing things like that as well, but so far so good.

I am pissed that I am blocked out of Perez Hilton's site though, cuz he has some funny shit.

We're blocked from U-Tube/Facebook type sites.. and yes, big brother is watching your every move (or can if he wants to)

How do you suppose people goofed off at work before the internet? That I would like to know because if things start getting blocked, I'm going to need to find a way to fill up my 8 hrs. Honestly, I don't know why they have my position. They don't have enough work for me.

I think my director just likes saying she has an assistant. She's always giving me retarded tasks like "I got a fun project for you. Why don't you take the Christmas cards off my door? Won't that be fun?" I'm like "sure, ok" because seriously, there is only 6 of them. Then I think she realizes how retarded she is because she is standing next to the door that the 6 cards are taped on. She then says "Oh I guess I can do it" and takes them off in like 5 secs.

Seriously....I went to college people. Utilize my brains, please. That way I don't feel so crappy paying my student loan every month.

Companies usually use different criteria to determine what internet sites to block. #1. IT gets a log of ALL websites that EVERYONE has visited. So your company can block the most visited websites/or a website an individual user frequents if they wanted to. (usually social networking sites,etc) #2. I.T. can block sites based on keywords as well (ex: anything that has to do with sex). So they put filters on the server to restrict some or all users from certain sites.

Companies usually do this for a couple of reasons. The obvious being of course for employee productivity. But also for security reasons. So many sites can have pop-ups or viruses that can take over a companies entire server(s) if detremental enough.

I guess I finally find a perk about being in IT, I have unrestricted access to the internet!

Yep, my job uses websense which restricts some sites outright (like myspace/live streams/etc.) or allows quota time for approved sites. I can't even look at vitamin sites because they are prohibited under "unregulated compounds". Astrology is filtered out under "occult and folk religions". LOL

Each employee gets 180 minutes a day in quota time to use the allowed sites. Lucky me, I'm a supervisor so I have several log-ins and never run out. Even luckier, BDW doesn't count toward quota time for some reason so I'm good )
