buying a dress in NEW YORK in one week- does it work?

Recommended Posts

Hi girls

I need you gals advise if this will work. I will be in NEW YORK for a 5 to 7 days to have my Hen's party there with a few friends, and I was thinking to buy my wedding dress there in NEW YORK. We are heading to Oahu to have our wedding later on. I was wondering if anyone have done this before? I am from Australia and my budget for a dress is between $1K to $3K...but with that price it is hard to find a nice wedding dress...at least NY would have more choices and the price would be much cheaper...

Where would you recommend me to go in New York (Manhattan) to try on wedding dresses?

where to buy bridemaid dresses?

It is too rush to buy a rest in the first 2 or 3 days ?

any other suggestion would help too

Cheers,

J

I did something a bit similar, but within the country. I live in Chicago and went to Maryland for a weekend to go dress shopping. I had three appointments in two days (should have given myself at least two hours at each place). We also had a marathon mall shopping trip. We did find my dress, my bridesmaids dresses (David's Bridal) and my mom's dress (mall department store) all in one weekend.

I think your budget is completely reasonable, but I'm sorry I can't give you any location suggestions, not knowing NY at all! :-(

The only thing I'd worry about in your situation is getting it eventually shipped to you for final fittings. Make sure the salon that you order from is aware of your situation, and if they really want your business, they will make it work for you. Don't forget to work this additional shipping time into your timeline!

Good luck with your trip!

Hello there! Where in Australia are you from? I just got back from Melbourne and Sydney. Sooo there are plenty of wedding dress shops in NYC you can try that will fit your budget. What's your style? J. crew on Madison Ave is a great place to start. Also try Lovely Bridal and the Bridal Garden (dresses are donated and all the proceeds go to charity). You can try David's Bridal as it has a Vera Wang collection, but in my opinion with the first three I mentioned you are more likely to find a deal on a more upmarket brand. You need to book appointments in advance, but if they are busy I would say you are from Australia and only have a few days in NYC! And note that you will probably have to get alterations elsewhere (however J. Crew dresses are in normal dress sizes and usually work without alteration). If you have any questions, want me to reach out to these shops or need help with your hen, I'm an NYC specialist and you can reach me at [email protected] or www.voyagenyc.com Best, Mary-Elizabeth

Thanks for sharing your story Acireta.... Yeah....I am still deciding at the moment. I have only been to to a few stores in Australia and try on around 20 dresses. I do know what i like and what I don't like. So, I was hoping to be able to pick it up off the rack properly when I arrived in NY...I did look up on the web and asking for prices...but they take forever to reply and also don't know what the actual dress would look like makes it hard.

Good tip ! about the additional shipping time....

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
