Legally Married in Mexico, Now what?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

If anyone can help me out I would REALLY appreciate it. I was legally married in Mexico in January and now I'm not sure what to do with my marriage certificate in the US. Or do I need to do anything? I have the copies but not the official appostille copy yet. Do I need to register these with the state (I live in MN). I called our county courthouse but they said they don't register marriages that aren't in state. I'm confused, HELP! Thanks!!!!

Nope, you're done!

okay, that's not really true. But I didn't even get my license appostilled or anything. I just took the wedding certificate to the Social Security office, then to the DMV, and ta-da, all done!!

Wisconsin doesn't file if you aren't married in the state either.

I didn't realize I didn't have to do anything really either when I got back. However, we did get the certificate translated and recorded the spanish/english versions with the County we lived in so there is an official record of it in the states if we need it. Again, this wasn't to make the marriage legal in IL, it already was, but we did it just to have it on record and in case we ever lost ours!

You are a wealth of knowledge for me :) Same resort and same state! I was wondering the same things... did you have the legal ceremony in MX at the GBP? What exactly happens after that? Did you have your cert. translated, and all that in MX and wait for the copies to be mailed or did you take it home with you when you left? Did you take the spanish copy to the SS Office, DMV, etc? I'm way confused on what I need to do to make sure it's all legal, etc. here in WI.... Thanks in advance hun!

I think if you are LEGALLY married in Mexico (with the blood test and judge) then you are legally married everywhere. I think as long as you have a certificate that's all you need...but I may be wrong? It is wierd. I wonder how the government here knows if you don't have to record it?

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
