Travel Insurance

Random question...

 

I've never purchased travel insurance before because I get some coverage thru my work.

With work I get medical, travel interruption/delay, and other things.

 

I don't have trip cancellation and I don't have baggage coverage.

 

It would take a lot for us NOT to attend our wedding LOL! but since I am paying for my kids to be there too, and bringing all our favors I am a little worried.

 

A full package with medical, trip cancellation and baggage is about $266 thru TA.  (cheaper with medical, than without)

If I just want baggage $1000 is $75 BUT that is only for me... apparently you can't get a family rate.

 

I can't find anything cheaper online.

Just can't decide if it is necessary!  I think I can do without the trip cancellation, because again it will take A LOT for us not to attend our wedding, but I wouldn't mind the baggage insurance.

 

What is everyone else doing?

I'll give you a random question back... lol  What if one of your kids gets really sick 2 days before you are due to leave, and is say hospitalized. What would you do?  That's where the trip cancellation comes in. We had a flight booked for the 29th of this month to Vancouver. No big deal. Just to reassure my 93 yr old father that things are ok after all our stuff. I just got back out of the hospital again last night. Absolutely no way I can fly for a minimum of one month now. Well the 29th isn't a month away so we're scrambling to sort it out. We're rebooking so it's a little different but it still made a total mess of things. Horrible subject but what if someone very close to you passes away suddenly right before your wedding? What are you going to do?

 

Nobody likes to think that anything is going to happen, especially something really bad..... but life is what it is and you just never know.

I have considered my kids getting sick (not hospitalization) and assumed we would make arrangements for them to go with their father.  But like you said, much worse can happen.  

For piece of mind, at the very least, $266 probably is worth every cent.

 

Sorry you had to be back in the hospital and you are going thru all of this.  It just takes one person to deal with something to make it seem more 'real life', so while my heart goes out to you, I thank you for giving me your experience.

Thanks! As I said, nobody likes to think anything is going to happen. With the volume of traffic we have here in Toronto and the accidents that happen daily, you always need to be prepared. All of our kids live far. Closest is 2 hours away plus we have our camper so we spend a lot of time travelling. You hear about things happening and it's always to other people. We've learned the hard way that it isn't always other people. With your wedding being so important, I would say the insurance is a small cost compared to what it might be if you weren't able to go at all and had to cancel last minute.

 

This was the second trip back to the hospital since the original stay 5 weeks ago so I've pretty much had my fill now lol Complications that weren't supposed to happen or so they said. But this time involved the cardiac unit for 3 days so now it's another specialist for at least the next year, and our trip being cancelled for now.

 

I know it's probably easier for the younger brides not to think about anything happening but it's much better to be prepared.

In the US,  Insurance policies and coverage will vary with companies and the type of coverage desired.  I don't know anything about the coverage or companies in Canada. I would strongly advise you to read all information about the insurance offering to be sure it will meet your needs (to the degree possible).  In the US there are specific stipulations about the timing of initial payments for the trip and coverage available.  So just know what you are getting and what protections are available to you should you need to file a claim.

I always strongly recommend travel insurance and have had experience with claims personally and professionally.  In 2013, I received over $7000 in reimbursements for claims following my husband's injury during a trip to Maui. So, things can happen to prevent a trip from happening (such as mentioned above), or during the trip.

I always tell my clients that the coverage price is minimal compared to the cost they will experience if there is an emergency. And they will be very happy to have the coverage if they should end up needing it.

Just read it carefully and know what you are getting.
