Pros: Super friendly staff, gorgeous grounds, amazing food, great drinks, beautiful rooms
Cons: Horrible Wedding coordinators.

I for one, think that the resort is just amazing, alone it deserves the 5 stars (which is what I gave them despite the horrible Wedding Coordinators service) I didnt feel it to be justice to knock down the resort for the WC's. I would have posted their own review under the wedding Vendors but unfortunately they are not listed as vendors so this will have to do.

Okay to Jump right into it....

Wedding-A+++++

Our wedding was so so so much more than we expected it to be. We did hit some not so tiny bumps in the road once we got to the resort (I will explain later in this review) but over all I think everyone who attended had soo much fun as did my now husband and I. We blindly went into having a destination wedding, a friend of ours was showing us pix of their honeymoon resort when H & I decided to just have a destination wedding. The first resort we found was the Royal Cancun & we both immediately fell in love. We of course kept searching but in our heart and mind we had already made up our minds. We began the process in November 2009 and we were then married on September 25, 2010. So we had less than a year of planning.

Airline-F/A+

The reason for the 2 grades is because we, along with our wedding party and most of our guests had booked with Mexicana Airlines. And we all know what happened with them, they ended up filing for bankruptcy. Well I understand that it may be unfair to give them such a bad grade for something like that, but my reasoning is when word first got out about their considering bankruptcy, my then Fiance & I immediately called them up to figure this out. They specifically told us that they HAD NOT filed for bankruptcy and are just reconsidering their financial options. They said that if they did file for bankruptcy, everyone’s flights will handed over to United or American Airlines (I forget which one of the 2 owns Mexicana) with no problem. This was not the case when they did file for bankruptcy. What would happen if we decided to fly with their sister airline was, we still had to pay for a whole new flight (mind you this was maybe 2-3 weeks before our wedding so prices were ridiculous) they would give us a 20% discount OR we could just be on standby and they would tell us the day of our flight if they had space for us, so we would have no guarantee if we would be flying out that day and if we were we had no clue as to what time to depart.

My husband and I decided to search for cheaper flights and we managed to find flights thru Frontier Airlines. I had never heard of this airline before but after doing some research I read some pretty great things about them. The flight attendants were all really nice and friendly and our returning flight home, as I was boarding the plane the pilot and co-pilot both chatted with me as I was waiting for the line to move, they were super friendly! And what I found to be really cool about this airline is that every seat has a TV in front of them and they have Direct TV service, so if you paid an additional $6.00 or if you paid an upgrade on your ticket, you could watch whatever you wanted. Apparently my husband & I paid this upgrade without knowing when we purchased our tickets because they activated our TVs on all of our flights. That really helped make our trip seem shorter, I was able to watch my usual TV of MTV, E!, VH1, the Food Network & TLC. Another neat thing about the airlines is that on every flight after 10 am, they give everyone a free home baked chocolate chip cookie. My husband really enjoyed the cookies as I did.

As for storing my dress, I really did not have a need to have it stored in a closet nor in the overhead bin as my dress was in my husbands’ carry-on along with his suit. We vacuumed sealed those puppies, as our resort provided a free steam of my dress and pressing of his suit.

Arrival in Cancun-A

Our arrival in Cancun was pretty easy and quick…it maybe took us about 40-45 mins. It was not bad at all. We were asked to open one of our suitcases because I had 3 bottles of expanding gel filler that you put inside of the centerpiece vases, which the customs guy thought was medicine. But besides that it was pretty breezy.

Transfer company-C

Once we exited the airport, we kind of had a hard time finding our ride; you can clearly tell where to go to get a cab but the problem was that it wasnt clear as to how to decipher which company was which. There were about 50 men and running around trying to get your attention, there was no sign designating each company to each of their spots. The company we were with was "Best Day Transport "and we had booked our transfer with our wedding coordinator when booking everything for the wedding. Once we found the company, we gave our name and they could not find us in their records. We even gave them the confirmation code we received from their company and they still could not find us, even after the guy we were talking to called their office. The guy then proceeded to tell us that they do not sell rides as they are all thru reservations. So even though we had pre-paid our ride, we could not get one.

Luckily a guy from a different company heard what was going on and he said he would give us a “discount” on a ride with their company. He offered it to us for $40 but neither my husband nor I had cash, besides $30. So we ended up getting our ride for $30.

Once we got to the resort, we went straight to the Best Day office and let them know what happened. They let us know that they would look into it and a couple days later they apologized and said that it somehow got lost, so they reimbursed us the money we used our first day to get a ride from the different company and they gave us a discount on what we had prepaid with them in the beginning.

On our departure from Cancun, we used Best Day to take us to the airport, since we had prepaid it & everything went smoothly; they were there when they said they would pick us up and the driver was really friendly.

The only reason the grade is kind of low is because having this happen to us right as we landed in Cancun kind of put a damper on our arrival, especially when you are not prepared for the heat wave that is waiting for you outside.

Resort A+++++++++++!!!!!

This resort is truly amazing!!! I really feel that we made the right choice in staying here; as soon as you step out of your car and into the resort you get the feel that you’re a VIP and everyone is there for you. The resort staff here is the best!! Everyone is soo friendly and helpful. As soon as we walked in the resort to check in, we were greeted with a glass of yummy champagne and cold towels. Check in went pretty smooth and we were soon walking to our awesome room. (There was an issue with our room which I will discuss later in the Wedding coordinator sections as we booked our rooms thru them not thru the hotel)

Room-A+!

All the rooms at this resort are awesome!!! Each and every room is facing the beach so everyone gets an amazing view. Our guests all stayed in all the different types of rooms and they were each pretty snazzy! No one had a single complaint about their room, until they visited our room lol

Our original room was a Royal Corner Suite (about 760 sqft) and it had everything we needed plus more. The cool thing about staying in one of the higher suites are the perks you get (complimentary 1hr drive of their BMW Mini Coopers, In-suite steam shower, suite-designated Beach Cabana, Bvlgari room amenities and reservations for one of the restaurants that is off limits to guests with the lower suites)

2 days after arriving we were upgraded to our permanent room the Royal Master Swim Up Suite, this complimentary upgrade was included in our wedding package. NOW this room was ridiculously insane! It included all the extras I mentioned above, plus it was 850 sqft, a huge living area, wonderful bed and memory foam pillows that you order each day according to your needs, Bose Stereo System & Ipod  a rotating 32” LCD TV (which was awesome when we were in the Jacuzzi or on the terrace), our own liquor cabinet, a Wii game console, bathrobes and slippers (we received brand new sets to take home with us) and best of all OUR OWN PRIVATE POOL!! Lol

I loved this room so much, it really had everything that you would need. We received a fruit basket along with a gorgeous flower arrangement from the romance concierge, our bed was also decorated with rose petals and towel animals. The steam shower was amazing, I just wished I was able to enjoy it more but with my asthma it was not possible. But for the 10 mins I did get to enjoy it, I loved it! The Bose system & Ipod was a great amenity to have in our room, that way when we were swimming in our pool we could be listening to music. The liquor cabinet was a huge hit, I believe we had Captain Morgan, Absolut, a tequila bottle and another type of alcohol bottle and on top of that, we received a complimentary bottle of champagne, Don Julio Tequila and Johnny Walker.

Okay whoever invented the “Magic Box” is the most intelligent person ever! Lol For those who don’t know about this, it’s a box that is hidden by a little wood door that is on one of the walls in your room that leads to another little wood door on the outside of your room. So when you call for room service you tell them to “leave it in the magic box” and when they bring you your stuff, they open the door from the outside, leave the contents and flip the light switch on to notify you that you have something inside! Tell me this is not awesome!?! Lol obviously I really liked this, it’s like a present waiting for you every time you open the door! Haha But in reality this is just made for discreet room service.

Restaurants-A++++

Overall the food was delicious!! Everything I ate, I pretty much loved!! I made it a point to eat as much as I possibly could this trip, and I think pretty much our entire party did just that…the food was incredible!

Royal Coffee House: This is pretty much a coffee house with lots of yummy treats. This place was really cool because we passed it every morning on the way to the lobby so whenever we were running late and could not sit down for breakfast, we would just pop in there and grab a donut and some coffee or milk and we instantly had breakfast to go!

24 Hr. All Inclusive VIP Lounge: The Lounge housed 2 pool tables, a ping pong table, dart board, and a variety of board games. We all hung out here maybe 2-3 times, this was a good place to get everyone together to plan your daily activities which is what we did, while playing Jenga for shots =) The food here was buffet style where you grab what you want, as much as you want, when you want, as many times as you want. The food was a variety of cheeses, deli meats, nachos, guacamole, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, fruits, and pastries. The bar was the best, I would say there was about 30 different alcohol bottles to please whatever you were in the mood for.

Tapas & Pintxos: We did not try this

Asiana: We ate here 2 times and both times we ate here we did the Teppanyaki, so we did not try the other part of the restaurant. The restaurant is similar to the US’s Benihana’s. Super yummy.

Maria Marie:I would say that this restaurant is the fanciest of all, it is a Gourmet Mexican-French fusion cuisine, which sounds somewhat odd but both times that we ate here, I enjoyed what I ordered. The deserts here were superb!

Chef’s Plate: We did not try this. This restaurant is pretty cool from what I was told. You definitely have to make a reservation for this place since it is designed for 14 people (I believe that’s the max capacity, I'm not too positive if it is more or less than this) but what you do is all the 14 guest sit at a long table and the chef cooks whatever his heart desires. I’m not sure how many courses the meal is, but the menu changes every day. So you don't know what you’re getting when you walk thru the doors but I'm sure it’s delicious!

Spice : This was my favorite restaurant out of all of them, just because it was all buffet style so you get exactly what you want. We ate here for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I enjoyed my meals every time.

Highlights of breakfast : made to order French toast, pancakes, Belgian waffles and humongous omelet’s.

Highlights of lunch : made to order hamburgers, the ice cream bar and best of all (IMO) the ceviche, delicious!

Highlights of dinner: made to order “street” tacos (yuuuummmmm!) and the steak. Oh yeah and the guacamole was delicious!

Pelicanos :  this restaurant is open aired and you have an amazing view of the beach and the infinity pool. The food here was awesome as well, I just wouldn’t recommend it for breakfast. Just because every dish was all eggs, eggs and more eggs and being a person who’s not a fan of eggs, it was hard to choose a dish since they all contained eggs. I ended up ordering cereal. But lunch and dinner were the best. My husband really liked one of their steaks, and I especially loved their lobster! Seriously best thing ever!

Trade Winds Swim Up Bar & Lounge Bar: Awesome bar, you just swim up and order your drink and you’re set! As for the lounge bar, it was freaken the best part of the trip. On our way out to the pool, you walk by the bar so you can grab something as you head out. Well on one trip I asked for a shot of tequila, I should have rethought that request. The bartender began to pour my shot and he continued to pour, I swear it was a triple shot. Every shot you asked for you got more than the previous time lol

Yummy Drink...I believe it was named the Mayan Riviera

Room Service: B+

The room service selection was not all the great, pretty much consisted of hamburgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and some steaks. The bad thing about the food was that they weren’t like normal foods, they all had some different ingredient in them that just sounded odd. But room service did come in handy on the nights when we just got in after some heavy partying and drinking, at 4 in the morning anything tastes delicious!

Entertainment: A

During our stay here, we only saw one show. While I wished I could have seen every single one, we were always doing something during the show time. We caught the Monday show of the Prehistoric Mayan dancers. I know they had different shows every night, the only ones I can remember are the Mayan one, one with dancers hanging from the ceiling and Casino night.

Pool-A+

The pool was so beautiful and so much fun. The design of the pool was awesome where it almost felt as though there were 3 pools instead of just one. There were little bridges that sort of separated the pool into sections, the bridges were used so guests can get to the resort to the other side of the pool where the Pelicanos restaurant was located, or to get to the beach chairs or to get down to the beach.

Beach-A

The beach was truly stunning, it was just so beautiful how blue and clear the water was. Our entire stay there, the red flags were up letting us know that it was unsafe waters. Someone told us it was due to jellyfish (eeek) so we would just go in knee deep and that was about it, no real swimming nor activities got done in the water

Okay here is where things get bad so brace yourselves because this will be looong!

Wedding Coordinator(s)-D

The reason for the low grade is because since the day we booked our wedding with Royal Weddings by Real Resorts we have had problem after problem after problem. I’m going to try and and go into as much detail as possible. The first problem occurred back when the communication was done with you and the coordinators in Michigan (unlike now where it is direct with Mexico.) Our Michigan coordinator was Kimberly, she was ridiculously nice and we always had a speedy response from her, until she up and quit without telling ANYONE! My husband and I sent her countless emails with no response what so ever. My husband finally called Michigan and they told us that she quit and our emails were just sitting in her inbox for about 2-3 weeks now. Knowing this, they made no attempt to contact her clients whatsoever! After arguing with them, the girl (I forget her name) who we spoke to said she would take us on as her client and would take over Kimberly’s job . As good as that sounded, it was nothing but problems because we literally had to start over with the new coordinator because she was saying that a lot of the information we received from Kimberly was incorrect and then we were told that they have no records of our making a single payment on our wedding. Thank God we had our bank statements because we definitely were paying them. After we got some things situated and maybe 2 months later we were then told that they were now closing their Michigan offices because Mexico was unhappy with their performance and all the negative reviews they were receiving was because of the Michigan offices (this should have been a humongous clue as to how things would be.) so upon hearing this I pretty much burst into tears because all I was thinking was that it was going to be soo hard to communicate with Mexico, and my Spanish isn’t perfect so I knew I was going to struggle with that. Our Michigan coordinator told us that our new coordinator from Mexico will be contacting us within a week or two….about 1 month passed and nothing, no call, no email nothing!! It was not until my husband called Mexico that we got a hold of our new coordinator, Flora de la Garza.

Issue #1 – First of all, Flora did not seem all too concerned that she had not contacted us, but none the less she was friendly and seemed to be a good coordinator thru emails. It was a whole different story once we met her in person, 4 days before our wedding. She was really friendly when we met and she had all our emails up for reference when we met her. The problems began when she asked us how many of our guests were not staying at the resort, which I found to be odd because I had sent her a list of all of our guests and those who were and were not staying at the resort, so she should have known this. After letting her know that 5 of our guests were not staying at the resort she slapped a penalty of $400 on us. This really pissed us off because our last conversation with her was before we left Cancun and our invoice showed our remaining balance of $0.00. Which I may be an idiot but when I see a balance of $0.00 I think that I have to pay zero dollars out of my pocket because I've already paid everything off. So we got into an argument about this with her because she could have told us beforehand that there was going to be a penalty for those guests, after she saw the list of our guests we sent her, about 2-3 months before the wedding. Pretty much there was nothing they could do and we had to fork over the money.

Issue #2 – Originally we had booked the presidential suite for our stay, so we were supposed to get the efficient for free, since we were paying so much for our room. Maybe 1-2 before the wedding my husband and I changed our minds on the presidential suite after we saw that we would qualify for a free room upgrade, if it was available, so we decided to downgrade rooms. We let Flora know about our decision and asked if she could update our invoice with our new balance, since our room and entire stay was booked thru the wedding coordinators, in regards to our change she really didn’t have anything particular to say and just made the necessary changes. Well during our meeting, she decides to throw in, that since we downgraded rooms, we now have to pay for the officiant, because the only reason we were getting it for free was because of the presidential suite. I don’t understand, what part of a zero balance to these people not get?? I really cannot comprehend how these people do their business down there because when you tell someone that you are giving them a service for free because they are paying so much for a room (or really anything), how do you not tell them that they will now have to pay for that service because they have decided to change the variable that was qualifying them for the freebie??. Yet once again there was nothing she could do and we had to pay another $450 for an officiant that I seriously could have done without, she was about 7 months pregnant, her English was not so great, we heard a lot of “umms” and it really seemed as though she was just stalling for time to pull things out of her butt. I would have preferred her reading off a piece of paper than the stunt she pulled. Lastly the times when she was attempting to be funny she ended up coming off as rude and at one point during the ceremony I seriously thought she had insulted me.

Issue #3 – Back when we had our original coordinator, I let her know that we will be bringing our own photographer into the resort. The ONLY thing preventing us doing so was the outside vendors’ fee, because they have to cancel the company that they have booked in the resort. She let me know that the only way this fee could be waived was if the photographer did not use any of their equipment nor electricity. So I asked our photographer this very question and he let me know that all his stuff is battery operated so this would not be an issue. I let the coordinator know this and she said that we were all set to go. But now sitting in front Flora, she pretty much said that this was all BS and she cannot value what Kimberly said.  She even claimed to be sitting right next to Kimberly at the time that I spoke with her on the phone and she did not recollect hearing Kimberly tell me this (interesting that she remembered this one conversation right?) So on top of everything else, we now have a $500 outside vendors’ fee that we need to pay.

Issue #4 – Flora in general was extremely unorganized. She absolutely did nothing for us on our wedding day. She arrived 10 minutes late to pick me up in our suite to lead me to the gazebo. She wouldn’t answer any questions our bridal party had in regards to how they should walk down the aisle (I had specifically told her to inform our bridal party of this information. But since we did not want to pay for a rehearsal, Flora decided she was going to be mute and not say anything to anyone.) During the reception, she was missing half of the time and we had to use the staffs' walkie talkies to find her. We had NO CLUE where she was at, she had the timeline of how things should go, so it was vital that she was around. When we moved in from the gazebo to the reception room after the ceremony, she had us all standing around in the lobby and casually said “okay everyone go in now” so everyone just walked in and the Bride & Groom nor bridal party introduction was done, since Flora pretty much decided to rush everyone in. Lastly, we decided to extend our reception so we added some extra hours. My dad was actually going to take care of this and Flora was insistent that he pay for it right that very instance. He wasn’t going anywhere, it’s not like he was going to run away after the wedding, she just demanded he pay now. She pretty much dragged him out of the room and made him walk thru the entire hotel to her office to bay the balance. My dad kept telling her to take his credit card and run it and return with the slip so he wouldn’t have to miss his daughters wedding, but she wasn’t having it. He ended up being gone for about 30-45 mins and we had to push back the father daughter dance.

Smaller Issues – This is a super minor issue but still an issue. When we first booked our wedding we were told to make the decisions from what was available for the food, cake, flowers etc. Obviously people change their mind whenever they’re planning anything. I had originally chosen my bouquet back in November 2009 (which was before I had set a theme, I just went with what I liked and made  a decision since we were being pressed for choosing everything at that moment) About 2 months before the wedding I let Flora know that I wanted to change my bouquet to match my theme of Gerbera Daisies. She said this would not be a problem and we will make the change once we are in Mexico. Well once in Mexico I brought this issue up to her and she casually said that it couldnt be done because I waited to long to put in my request for the change and the flowers for my original bouquet had already been ordered. However she must have remembered this conversation because she threw in my toss bouquet and let me have my choice in whichever arrangement I wanted despite the cost. In the end I loved my original choice and my toss bouquet was my Gerbera daisies that I wanted, so it was win-win for me.

Lastly, we met with her on Tuesday and Wednesday when I went to look for her in her office (where we had met before); the office space appeared as if Real Weddings never existed; The sign with the company name was still up but the door/walls/windows were boarded up and no one knew where they went. When I asked for their offices everyone directed me to the boarded up office. Apparently they moved offices and she didn’t think it was necessary to let us know.

This whole experience with dealing with Royal Weddings by Real Resorts was just horrible. My husband and I spent a good amount of time of our vacation arguing, waiting around, talking on the phone and on the computer searching for emails. I was so stressed out on this trip, it was ridiculous. I would burst out in tears randomly throughout the days because I just knew that more bad news would be delivered or the bad news we had already gotten was weighing in on me. The only great days we had there were our 1st full day there (we had yet to meet with Flora) and the days after the wedding (no Flora around.) About 10 minutes before the wedding ended, Flora disappeared and we never heard nor saw her for the remaining of our stay. As wonderful and beautiful our wedding was, I kind of wish we would have chosen a different resort or at least had a different coordinator.

Resort Photographer-B-

I had looked at some of the resort photographers, Fun Times (I believe that’s their name) work and I really wasn’t all that impressed, which is why we decided to go with our own photographer. But we did have the resort photographer included in our wedding package so he worked along side Ivan for the ceremony only. Our wedding was on Saturday and on Monday we met with him to look over pictures and choose our favorites which we would get in an album and those pictures on a CD. Their work wasn’t anything special, honestly looked like they were pictures from a guest’s digital camera.

Report Videographer-B+

Our packaged included having our ceremony recorded which was nice. The only reason they’re getting a B is because we were supposed to have the video the Monday after the wedding. Come Monday afternoon we received a call that the video wasn’t ready and they would FedEx it to our home since we were leaving the next day. We were told we would have in about 7 days. Those 7 days passed and we had not received anything, I emailed them to ask for a follow up regarding the video and was told that they would be mailing it out soon. I just received the video on 10/25…I don’t understand how something that was supposed to be finalized in about 2 days takes 30 days. The video isnt spectacular ( i know Im complaining a lot but this is what reviews are for) I wasnt keen on the background choice song, some parts are hard to hear but any who it’s nice to have the video of the ceremony.

Florist-A++++

I don’t know the name of the flower company that was used since we just used the arrangements that were shown to us from the Royal Weddings catalogs. But the flowers were all exquisite and beautiful. My bouquet which I had my doubts about turned out being gorgeous and more than I had expected. The hubsters’ boutonnière was a simple fuchsia rose and we were extremely happy with it. The color of it was so vibrant and it was just what I wanted.

Hair & Makeup-F

Once again our packaged included my hair and make up for the wedding to be done by Spazul at the Resort. I don’t remember who did my hair and make up, I just know he was the only male beautician there. Prior to his beginning my hair, I showed him a picture of what I wanted and he said he could totally do it. After an 1 of working with my hair he was done (?) What I saw in the mirror was nothing like the picture, I literally had a knot in the back of my head that was 95% of my hair pinned up and 2 curled strands of hair that was loose and sat on my shoulders…it hurt to smile, talk or even open my eyes, that’s how tightly he gathered and pinned my hair back.

As for my makeup, the one thing I told him was that I like to stick with browns and neutrals, nothing too dark and I don’t like the “eyeshadow all over the eyelid up to the eyebrow look.” Once done, I saw that he used a dark grayish black color all over my eyes...it was just bad. And plus he did not color in my eyebrows which is something I said was a must because my eyebrows look thin and bare if they are not colored in. I also said I like A LOT of mascara and love false eyelashes, he did 1 coat of mascara and no eyelashes. I had also told him, no lipstick because I’m ridiculously picky when it comes to this, he decided not to listen and put on this ugly maroon purpleish color on my lips.

Once everything was done, I ran out of there so fast and thank goodness our room was close, so no one really saw the damage. It was the funniest thing because Ivan,our photographer, looked at me like I was crazy since he just saw me get my makeup/hair "professionaly" done and here I was wiping my face off and taking out every single one of the 200 bobby pins that were in my hair. I re did my make up and hair to my liking in the 25 minutes before I was to walk down the aisle.

Ceremony @ Gazebo-A+

The ceremony was perfect, only wished it wasn’t some damned windy but oh well. The gazebo was decorated beautifully.

Reception @ Club house

Due to the chance of rain we had to move the reception indoors and because we were a smaller party we were able to take advantage of the Real Resorts Club house. Which was so perfect with us and plus it had AC!!! The room was decorated nicely and it was a great space for us.

Cocktail Hour-A

The hour devours served were absolutely delicious, we decided to go with the Chef’s choice of what to serve (at that point we were done with dealing with Flora and we figured she would probably get it wrong anyway so instead of having another issue we just let the chef decide.) I wished i had pictures to show but unfortunately the pix I do have are during night time so you miss out on the awesome beach view which made having this room worthwhile.

The trio was awesome and so much fun. For the hour that they played they were taking requests of songs from the guest and they even played some Michael Jackson songs hehe

Reception Dinner-A++++

The food was absolutely delicious; everyone raved about the food and commented that this was some of the best food they’ve ever had.

Here is what was on our menu:

Salad: Field Greens and goat cheese salad, drizzled with almond oil. I am a huge fan of goat cheese, and this salad satisfied all my cravings, it was so delicious

Soup: Princess cream soup with green asparagus au mint. The soup was probably my least favorite part of the meal, I really could have done without it(im not a big vegetable eater) but none the less the guest all loved it.

Main Entrée: Lamb chops perfumed with fresh spearmint served with trouffle potatoes. Once again, super yummy. H & I are big lampchops fans and these were just superb and cooked to perfection. The soufflé potatoes were great as well.
