  1. Hi All,

I'm not quite done my project (need to sit down with the fiance and pick which one we like best!), but have had so much fun putting this together that I have to share!  I'm planning on doing a welcome letter using vistaprint's rack cards and putting a wedding timeline on the back side.  I loved the pics that I had seen online of these, but couldn't find any free clip art websites until I stumbled across www.clker.com.  There are a ton of different images and you can edit them right on the web!  It's amazing!  It took me a few minutes to work out how the editor works.  Once I discovered that the objects were grouped (like you can in powerpoint), it was much easier.  There are lots of different colour effects that you can do too!

So, here's a few pics of the front side of the welcome card and the wedding time line that will go on the back.  All custom coloured and matching!  Not sure which front I like best... will discuss with FH, but any thoughts?  I'm kinda partial to the bright orange one, but maybe it's too much?

    THanks!

No, it's not air conditioned, but it is open air (they can raise or lower the sail-like walls - does that make any sense?!?).  Yes, you can rent just the downstairs and I believe it is $500.

  3. Hi!  I had the exact same thoughts - their work is similar.  I had tentatively booked with Karina, but due to a mix up (which was entirely my fault) we ended up losing her.  I'm honestly not a fan of some of the other popular photographers around, but loved K.N.'s work.  I knew she was too pricey for me, but thought I'd get in touch anyways because we were in a bit of a bind and we were able to  work out something that works for both of us.  When I said that she was out of my budget she asked what worked in my budget and I told her that and what i was willing to give up (i'm okay with only having one photographer and not having the day covered from the moment i wake up till the moment we fall asleep! :)

We got ready at the elegance (dress and all!) and headed to the jellyfish at 3. I met K there, and we did our first look pictures as soon as my groom arrived. I did not have her come to the resort because we did not want to pay the outside vendor fee, and my cousin took getting ready shots of me. (they were not really a priority for me, but the ones he took are definitely fun. I'm sure anyone could take a few of your dress, shoes, etc. if you wanted. I wanted more time with K at the jellyfish!)

And the first look. I wish I could better put into words what it felt like! I was just so incredibly happy to share that moment with JUST my groom. I didn't even realize how much I missed him until I finally got to see him waiting there for me. It made everything so real. K came in to Maytes office and told me he was already crying, which was the biggest surprise of the day! So as I walked up to him, I immediately got emotional too! All of my bridesmaids watched from afar, and there was not a dry eye around. It was so special to get to see, talk and hug him before our wedding. It so relaxed me and we felt much more "us" for the rest of the time, as opposed to a "bride and groom" if that makes any sense at all?

And after the first look, we we able to take all of our bridal party pictures pre-ceremony, so we could better enjoy our cocktail hour wink.gif never mind that the boys had already grabbed a beer while the else watched us take our first look pictures! It ended up being such a fun little hour and a half while the bridal party had full reign of the jellyfish, and we all caught up with ecahother!

So, jellyfish had sent two vans for the bridal party, and at 4:30, picked up all the rest of the guests (70, with the big bus and one van) Everyone was on time, and although the bus was hot, they enjoyed the ride over. We only rented the downstairs, because our dance floor etc. was outside, and this worked perfectly for us. I think there were two couples eating upstairs. I hid upstairs when the guests started arriving, which was fun, because I peeked down a few times. k was able to come up and take some special pictures of us girls waiting, which was really nice. (so I do, actually, have a few getting ready shots, as my makeup was retouched, etc.)

My ceremony was scheduled for 5:30, but the rain came, and we probably did not start til 6:15. The sun did begin to set after the ceremony during family pictures, but f course this depends on your time of year. Your photographer will be able to guide you and help you set up a timeline.

    My day, if it helps

11:00 hair apt (they had another wedding, so they didn't take us until 12! But it works out fine)

2:00 makeup (friend did it in my room)

3:00 bridal party vans to jellyfish

3:30 arrive at jellyfish for pictures

    4:30 guests picked up

5:00 guests arrived, two welcome drinks

    5:30 ceremony

The bus rides home were actually the only issue of the night. The big bus was leaving at 12:30 (ended up leaving at 1) but people with kids and some older guests wanted to leave earlier. I had figured that the one van would be enough to make a few round trips for those leaving earlier, and I was wrong. The van holds 10 or so, and made probably 4 round trips, which left some people waiting around to leave. In retrospect, my parents and I agreed we should have just discreetly paid a cab fare to send those guests back who were standing around waiting to leave. I had heard that the guests discussed calling a cab but had not brought any money (probably a 40-50$ cab ride) Of course if they had said that to anyone in my family, someone would have paid, but I know they did not want to bother any of us. Really, it was not that much of an issue, but just something to think about. :) no one was unhappy, so not to worry!

Whew, think I got it all :)

Oh, one more question!  :)  Did you get your hair and makeup done at the ME?  Who did you book your appointment through?

    Thanks!!

Ok, that's too funny that your colours were orange and blue - so are ours!  The similarity continues!  So now I want to see basically everything!  :)  Do you have any pics that highlight the different decor that you had (basic ceremony, entrance table, centrepieces, cake table, etc?)  I'd love to see your flowers too.  Could I ask what your name is on the facebook page?  That might help me find your pics!  If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to see a couple of your first look pics too... just to get an idea of what it would look like at the JF.

Yes, getting ready shots are of low priority for me too (good idea to have a friend take some while you get ready though).  Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts about the first look.  I am leaning more towards this option, especially after your thoughts.  I like the tradition of not seeing each other, but I am more tempted by the special moment that is just the two of you.  Thin it might help make me less emotional during the ceremony (i'm a crier!).

Thanks for the tips about the transportation home.  It's been a concern of ours as well and it's good to know that they have vans available too instead of just the big bus.  Did you decide on the 12:30 departure before the wedding day itself?  Would it have been easy to arrange for a cab?  I'm guessing that you could ask Mayte to call one and slip her the payment?

Sorry for all the questions!  This is sooo helpful though!!

I'll try to make this review as complete as possible, I know that reading everyone's reviews really helped me have confidence in Mayte and how our wedding would turn out, and I could not be happier!

We stayed at Majestic Elegance, which was about 1/2 hour drive to the Jellyfish. It was perfect for our 85 guests, and aside from a few small room issues, we didn't have a single complaint and not one guest went home unhappy! The restaurants accommodated us and our large groups, and we found some servers and waitstaff that helped make our vacation even more memorable. We worked with janet and had a cocktails and appetizer welcome reception at the Majestic two days before the wedding.

We did our tasting two days before the wedding, and I'm so glad we did because I hardly ate the night of the wedding! (we went back a week later during our honeymoon to have lunch and catch up with Mayte, and the food was just as incredible as we remembered!) we chose the hot pockets, chicken kebobs and bacon wrapped shrimp for appetizers, and guests had a caprese salad and choice between filet and lobster for dinner. We had the Jellyfish chef pasta family style on all tables. We also had cupcakes and a small cake for cutting.

The bridal party took two separate Jellyfish vans (one for the boys, one for the girls) to the Jellyfish at 3:00 to meet ***** Nova, our photographer, for our first look pictures and this worked out perfectly. The videographer, Carlos, from HDC, met us at 3:30 as well.

I was hidden in Maytes office while they set up my groom, and the first look is my absolute hands down favorite memory of the day, the week, the entire past year even. I can't don't it proper justice by trying to verbalize how I felt at the moment, but I was so incredibly overwhelmed I even surprised myself. It didn't help that ***** came in and told me my groom was already emotional! Standing behind him during the first look, with her music playing!, is a moment I will never forget. I cannot recommend her enough. And if you are considering doing a First look, I highly recommend it as well. ***** and her assistant Mike were amazing and the few photos she shared with me throughout the day were beyond perfect, and my favorite investment for our wedding. I was so grateful to feel like I had a friend at my wedding as opposed to a vendor. She is so genuinely warm and loving. When it started to downpour, she was the only one who could keep me calm as she promised the rain would pass and that none of the outside decorations would be ruined/soaked. (it did pass, but since the skies had been bright and sunny the entire afternoon, I had to work to keep myself from being disappointed that it was slightly cloudy during the ceremony)

I had given Mayte a labeled cd during our visit with my ceremony music, and the sound was perfect as my bridal party walked down the aisle. Its such a surreal feeling to hear that first beat of the music for your wedding! Both parents walked me down the aisle and it was plenty wide enough for us. I had Pastor York and of course he was as incredible as everyone says! I had asked him to add some things to the ceremony and he did a great job of incorporating my ideas to include all our guests in the ceremony. I brought my reader's readings printed on nice paper because I knew that it would be in the pictures and I'm crazy like that :)

My guests were picked up at the Majestic at 4:30. Just a warning, the bus and van that picked up my 85 guests were not really air conditioned, but by the time I saw the guests they were all over it wink.gif

Mayte had all of our flowers at the Jellyfish, we did my bouquet, six bridesmaids, the boutonnière, six flowers for my bridesmaids hair, and the flower girl petals. I had sent one or two pictures and just trusted Mayte to do her job! Everything was beautiful, and she actually pinned the flowers in all of my girls hair.

There were more people on the beach then I expected. I was actually pretty unaware of them during the ceremony but I was surprised to see so many people in the background of my pictures. I'm sure the professional pictures wont have that issue. We used HDC video, and Carlos, the videographer was very nice! It's actually so funny to see him and ***** up at the altar with us in the pictures, because again, I didn't even notice them that day!

We finished the bridal party pictures before the ceremony, so after we only had to do family pictures, and a few more sunset pictures during cocktail hour. We had chosen two drinks for pre-ceremony and ran a tab if guests wanted anything else. (most did!) After the ceremony we had open bar.

We used the Jellyfish DJ and the MC was great. He guided us through the introductions, speeches, first dances, etc. We chose to do the bridal party entrance dance in the restaurant, (a little tight, but still fun), have dinner, do our speeches, cut the cake, and THEN our first dances. This worked out perfectly because we chose the wooden dance floor on the beach and once we got all of our guests out on the beach for the first dances, the party never stopped until the buses picked us up at 1:00.

Overall, it was more then I could have imagined and impossible to believe that it is over! I have a few pictures on the jellyfish brides fb page, and if you want to see anything specific, just let me know. I hope this was helpful! Enjoy every minute of your wedding, every single thing they tell you about it going by too fast is an absolute truth. We had the most amazing wedding, and I know all of you Jellyfish brides will as well!

Thanks so much for the great review!!  It's super helpful to me because we are also staying at the ME, have about 75 guests, are using Rick York and ***** Nova (K A T Y A - I don't know why this site stars out her name?!) is our photograher!  I have a few questions if that's okay!  I assume that you got all ready at the resort and then went over to the JF and had ***** meet you there?  Did you put your dress on and everything too?  Did you have ***** take any pics of the getting ready process?  We are still not settled yet on whether or not to do a first look... I am tempted though!  What made you so glad that you did one?

With so many guests, were they able to pick everyone up at the same time or did they have to do 2 trips?  Also, how did you set it up for going back to the resort?  Did everyone stick around until 1:00?

For the welcome appis and drink that you organized at the ME, did you do that through their wedding coordinator or the groups department?

I looked for some picks on the facebook page, but couldn't tell which ones were yours - what were your colours?  I would love to see any that you're willing to post!  I'd love to see any pics of your flowers.

    thanks again and congratulations!!

  7. Thanks Blujaye!  So glad my post helped someone!  It's definitely easy to do yourself and I'm not really super crafty, just kinda crafty :).  Mine may not have the perfectly crisp edges of vinyl letters (although you can buy just vinyl letters on etsy too), but I like that when I look at it, I know that I made it!

The fonts I used were all free (not sure which website I got them from though, but should be easy to find them I think!).  The font for "Here comes the bride" was called Joyful Juliana, for "and they lived" was Andalus, and "happily ever after" was Scriptina.

I definitely made sure that the paint was dried when I transferred the letters to the board.  I wasn't sure if my homemade carbon copy trick would work, but it totally did!

If there's anything else, just ask!

  8. Hi Ladies,

Well I completed another DIY project this weekend and thought I'd share!  I wanted one of those "Here comes the bride/Happily ever after" signs, but by the time I got it double sided and paid for shipping it was about $40 and that seemed like a lot for something I could make myself so I thought I'd give it a go!  I think it turned out pretty well and only cost me about $5!

For the board, I just went to my local Rona (hardware store) and they usually have an area where they keep odd ends from cuts made with the table saw.  This piece of MDF was about the right size and priced at $0.50 - perfect!  I then picked up a sample can of paint from Home Depot (you know the $5 sample cans?), one of the ones that is primer and paint together, in an ivory shade.

For the lettering, I played around with different fonts in Word until I found one I liked (kinda liked the idea of somewhat child-like writing because my two little nieces will be carrying it).  Found a great tip from another website (can't remember which - sorry!), but I printed out the text and then rubbed over the backside of the paper with a pencil, around the letters to make my own kind of carbon copy paper.  You then lay the text over the sign, trace out the letters and the graphite is transferred onto the sign so you have a guideline - genius!  I outlined the letters with a black sharpie so that I didn't have to be so exact with the paint edges, and then filled it in with a black metallic coloured paint.  And I'm pretty happy with the results!

Oh, I also screwed in a couple of eye hooks to the top so that I can attach a ribbon.  And that's pretty much it!  Hope someone else finds that helpful!

  9. Hi All,

I thought I'd share my super quick DIY for my ring bearers.  Since we're having 2 (my nephews) I wanted them each to have something to carry and when I looked at buying things from various places, it seemed a little ridiculous to spend much on two somethings that will be used for about 1 minute and I can't really do anything with them later.  I basically just wanted something that would look cute in pictures and I think I got that!

The little round box is just from Michaels ($1.49, it's just really thin wood), bought some ivory paint, and a flower from Michaels too.  Cost about $8 for 2 and took about 10 minutes - once I decided which flower I liked best!  It also kinda looks cute with the big flower stuff inside the bottom!  We'll fill the base with sand from the beach that we're getting married at and put one ring (fake) in each box.

Super simple, but I like it!

    Hi Ladies,

We are not using Diego (we're going with Florian at Video Punta Cana), but I noticed a post on the facebook group for the Majestic Colonial brides where there was a bride who found out 3 weeks before her wedding that her date wasn't reserved even though she had received a confirmation email.  This is probably a one-off occurrence, but I thought I'd let you know.  I've posted a link to the comments if anyone wants to check it out.  Cores said it was a mixup and I'm not really sure what happened in the end - probably a little undue stress for the bride though!

I hated the notion of being pushed toward the resort "preferred" vendor just because that photoographer paid a fee to the resort or hands over a portion of the booking fee.  I wasnt going to be influenced by that when it came to documenting our wedding.  It became even more disheartening when I saw pictures from "said photographer" that were so photoshopped they looked like one of those spraypaint portraits you can buy at the exhibition or fair. The back ground was  "created" with so much photoshopped enhancement I knew that wasnt for us. And the "poses"  ...oh the poses. As I watched each new set of pictures come up, the bride and groom were in the same poses each and every time. I knew my husband wouldnt be up for placing his hand on his hip and lunging towards me with spot lights illuminating him and thats what i LOVE about him!  It just wasnt us.

We were getting married in the DR on the beach and i wanted, well, the beach and the beauty of the day ...  something very natural.   Photo journalism.  Moments we didnt even know would be captured. The photographer i kept coming back to was ***** Nova.  She was in the process of moving her business from Canada to the DR with her husband Rob and they are now established there.  Her pictures are natural ... there is no "posing" ... there is no excessive photoshopping ... she lets you be yourselves and catches moments that are real and intimate.  She is sweet and gentle and passionate and fun and asks about your love and brings out smiles and emotions and has a reassuring calm about her. Having ***** document our day was the choice my husband and I look back and and are very grateful for.

    Hi Funsocks!

I just had to comment because I feel the same way!!  I know what photos you mean with the people leaning towards one another with a spotlight behind and hands on hip.  Not my cup of tea!!  Although others seem to be pretty wild about them.  To each their own I guess!  We are going with K A T Y A Nova as well (I don't understand why this blog stars out her first name so I have separated the letters in case some people don't know who we're talking about).  I love her photojournalistic style and can't wait to see the pics that we'll get!!  Her work is pricey, but I would suggest contacting her anyways and seeing what she can do for you.  That's what I did and we're super pleased with the package we worked out.  Another photographer that has a similar style is Karina Jensen.  We were originally going to book her, but missed our opportunity.  I haven't seen that many reviews of her, but her work is really great and her prices quite reasonable I think.

Yes, the open bar is based on a per hour rate (just like the resorts - or at least the one we're staying at!), but you can also do your drinks a la carte if you wish where you pay per drink and get a final bill at the end of the night.  Could be worth it if you don't have big drinkers in attendance or a relatively small party.

    Hi Lauren,

Back on page 52 of this thread megsosborn has typed out her song list.  It might be a start for you if you don't get any emails from people.  Hope that helps!

  14. I don't think there is an updated list... I'm getting married in November and I think I have the same price list.

I can say is Oh. My. God! The food was incredible! The drinks were as well! 2 suggestions my friends, the mojito and the passion fruit daiquiri! But they were all good. And the food! We did a tasting on menu 1 and it was to die for! So happy with our choices! And Mayte is a doll! Soooo sweet! Any fears or nervousness we had about anything are all gone. All I can say is be patient waiting for your response. She has all your emails and all your info. Please don't ask her 100 questions at a time. She has 100 emails a day to answer. Pick a handful of your most important, wait for a response then a few more from the list. She will likely get back to you a little faster that way. She also does take care of people with weddings coming soon first. This time of year it seems like she is doing 5-6 weddings a week so be patient! It will be sooo worth it!

My other big piece of advice (that I didn't know), if you have a date and time arranged to meet her, head to your lobby, ask for a cab and go. We tried to contact her to find out if we needed to do that or if she had transport and we ended up getting there late. She had been waiting on our arrival. So just hop a cab and go... Also, a lunchtime meeting is ideal because the restaurant is quiet and you have her full attention! Happy planning! Stay tuned for some more raves next week!

Thanks for the post!  And it's good to know that Mayte would prefer to answer questions a few at a time.  I've wondered what is easier for her, so thanks!

  16. Congratulations Kellygrrrl!  You really look amazing!  And thanks for posting those pictures - they are super motivating!

My FI and I are on our recovery week right now and then on to Month 2!  I'm amazed that we've stuck with it (all due to him really!) and we've been following the nutrition plan too, which is even more unbelievable (i'm usually super terrible with things like that so it shows you that is actually pretty easy to follow).  The recipes are all quite easy and we honestly haven't really had one that we don't like - not bad!  We have taken a page out of Body for Life and give ourselves one cheat day or meal a week (we strive for only one, but it's hard with social engagements and such, but the most we do is about 2 so I think we're doing pretty well).  All in all I've lost about 5 pounds and about 5" total.  I pretty much lost all the weight in the beginning and was getting a bit frustrated, but I compared my inches the other day and was satisfied that I'm down in all the places - yay!  I think I'm just putting on muscle now (at least that's what I hope!).

One thing I'd say is to only measure/weigh yourself every 2 weeks.  Healthy weight loss is only 1-2 lbs per week and it's easy to get discouraged when you see the scale has only moved one marking... save it up over 2 weeks and you'll feel more motivated.

Are any other ladies out there still working through Insanity?

I think I might have some motivation to take some midpoint pics now and scrutinize for differences!

I felt soooo good and confident running around in a swimsuit for nine days, and in all the pictures I see muscles, not fat! It was so rewarding to just go enjoy the all-inclusive knowing how hard I'd worked for it, and I returned home to find my free t-shirt in the mail (seriously awesome - on the front it has the Insanity logo, and on the back it says 'I earned it').

I'd like to get back into some sort of routine now that we're home, but I just wanted to pass on that extra motivation for anyone who may need it. In the end it is SO. TOTALLY. WORTH. IT.

best of luck, and keep pushing! ; )
