  1. Several major Turks & Caicos resorts have either shut down or stopped taking reservations following the outbreak of a ?mystery virus? that has caused gastrointestinal illnesses among guests and plagued more than a dozen Turks & Caicos hotels and resorts since mid-May. Public health officials on June 2 ordered Beaches Resort Villages and Spa on Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos resort to close until June 9 following meetings between Beaches officials and a government delegation and after about 60 guests contracted severe diarrhea and vomiting in recent weeks. According to local press reports, the resort was at full occupancy at the time the closing, and an estimated 2,500 guests have been transferred to other Providenciales hotels or reimbursed for their vacations and are returning home. In a statement, Beaches officials said the resort ?has agreed to follow a recommendation by the Ministry of Health not to accept new guests at the resort until June 9 in order to undertake precautionary cleaning programs and break the 14-hour incubation of the illness.? The resort ?[has] experienced a very small number of cases,? according to the statement, and ?in fact now has fewer people affected by the illness.? Beaches officials are also working with resort and government healthcare professionals ?to ensure that health and safety practices are followed.? Officials are advising guests booked to stay at the resort over the next seven days to contact their travel agent or call 800-BEACHES to revise their bookings.
