Some dress advice please...

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. So far this is what I have decided to do. I found the dress for cheaper, like half price in my size, with a decent return policy. I am going to purchase it and try it on at home, in my size and hopefully get a good feel for what it's like. If I don't get a great feeling about it, then I'll just return it. When I tried this dress on the first time, I liked it but was surprised I liked it so much. And I couldn't stop thinking about it. And actually, when I went back to jcrew this last time to try it on again, I was considering buying it because J. Crew was having a 20% off sale online that included bridal gowns. I feel like this current price is too good for me to pass up and I just need to try it on, by myself, see how light/heavy it is, if I'm comfortable, etc. I may try david's bridal this weekend just to see if I like anything. I just feel so uncomfortable going to these stores and basically trying on the dresses in front of so many people.

Thanks again! I appreciate all the help!

You sound JUST like me 2 months ago! Dead serious! Only difference is I had bought a dress a year ago and after I bought it kept doubting it...the reason I doubted it was because I bought that "beach wedding" type dress...and honestly Jaime, YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED Hun!!! This is your wedding day and you need to feel like a BRIDE! don't shop for what people say is for a beach wedding, look for what makes you feel like a bride! I ended up returning my first dress and buying a Vera off the rack at David's bridal. SAME thing that your sister did by making you try on the dress off the mannequin is what my future sister in law did to me because I had been eyeing the dress up. She said they it on for fun.......I LOVED IT! I didn't cry the first time, I was just so HAPPY and loved the way it was poofy at the bottom and just made me feel like a bride...I tried others but couldn't wait to get that dress back on. Jaime after I left I couldn't wait to go back and buy it. The next day I tried it on for my future MIL and she cried, I just danced around the store in it with a huge smile on my face. And then when they went to do the bustle and I was ALONE with just me, my dress and the seamstress that was doing my bustle, I cried. It's my dress. I can see me getting married in it and I finally looked at myself as a bride. Jaime as I type this I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes with the excitement of my upcoming day. You WILL find a dress that does that to you. You might not cry right away, but do this.....a dress that you think YOU love, walk away with it on, ask for time alone, and process it, imagine your day.....and see what happens....you need that because you are a beautiful girl and your family will tell you that every dress is beautiful on you. Don't let them make YOUR decision. Oh and btw...I ended up spending $900 MORE on my new dress....and honey I sure didn't want to spend that much but this dress is SO WORTH EVERY PENNY for the way I feel about it.....one last thing since I seemed to write a whole story here. That dress you posted a pic of, it looks gorgeous on you. But listen to your gutt. You still have time. Shop around. Go to Davids Bridal. Just shop til you find it. And please take my advice on "some alone time" with a dress you find and love. Good luck sweetie and keep us posted!!! I'll be waiting!! PS my dress doubt post is in here too so you can see the dress I went from and then ended up buying :) ~Jess

Thanks. That definitely helps. I've only tried on maybe 8 dresses. I may have mentioned it in my original post (I don't remember) but when i tried this dress on I was surprised because it totally wasn't what I was looking for. I went for more of a chiffon or silky sheath. My sister and I happened to see the other one on a mannequin and she was like, "just try it on for fun" and I was all whatever about it, but ended up really liking it, perhaps even loving it at the time. The sheaths were nice too but they didn't make me feel like I was getting married. When I tried the other one on, I felt more like a bride even though I wasn't going for too much of a wedding-y look, if that makes any sense.

I think you are also right that the wedding planning stuff is getting me down and it really is making it hard for me to be excited about any of this, which makes me feel bad. Part of me is super excited about the wedding, but it's hard because our families are not excited about our plans at all and pretty much told us that it's just an inconvenience. Oh well. There was a time when I was really excited about the dress, so I almost wish I didn't try it on again under all this extra stress stuff going on. I tried posting a picture in the post above, if you want to see the dress I'm talking about.

I am going to take your advice and go to David's to try on some more dresses. I think it will give me a better sense of what I actually do and do not like.

Thanks again for your help. i really appreciate it!

Jess-

Thank you so much for your response. It helps so much. I don't know if you saw my more recent post but I decided to order the dress just so that I could try it on at home by myself to see how I really feel. I tend to be somewhat shy/reserved so I'm not the type to jump around and twirl in it in public and felt weird just trying anything on and coming out for all to see  - although I do admit that at J Crew you are not in front of a lot of people, just the people that you brought, which is nice. I just remember putting it on the first time and smiling with the hugest cheesiest smile... I think I have this idea in my head, like what I picture myself wearing (the light, airy, flowy, simple beach dress) and this isn't that. So I need to get rid of all those ideas and go with my feelings I guess. I'm hoping to have it some time this week so I will hopefully know more and have a better idea soon. Wish me luck!

I'm sending tons of good luck wishes your way!! Keep looking though if this one doesn't give you the feeling of loving it...there is still time. Girl you live in NY! ha ha so you have plenty more options than most people in regards to shopping. I thought my dress was going to be flowy and chiffon and beachy too...that's why I bought my first dress....but in the end it doesn't matter one bit about the beach, that's just your location...get a dress that makes you feel like a bride...that makes you feel beautiful! THAT is what matters :) it will all work out, I promise you that! So don't stress out about it :) hey just to give you an idea...for my new dress I was he'll bent on a color sash to go with it....everyone kept telling me no, that I needed to have a white sash on my dress because I'm the bride...ya know what?? The more I looked around and finally found the color and style I wanted and ordered...now everyone else has come around saying it's going to be gorgeous...check! One more thing off the list! That is a beautiful feeling! Haha so even though you are shy and reserved I'm sure part of you is listening to what your friends and family are saying too....just keep listening to your heart....and a huge cheesy smile helps you to know you have found the right one too :))) but it's gotta be a huge cheesy smile each time you put that dress on. Good luck girly!!!! Keep me posted!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
