    HELP!

Please, please, PLEASE stay away from Fabulous U!  I posted a LONG while back about the disaster I received from them.  The dress cost more to repair than it did to buy originally.  I paid over $700 for a dress that I hated and ruined the majority of my wedding pictures because it looked AWFUL!  My dress had similar ruching to the dress you are looking for and they screwed that part up BIG time!  The ruches were individual pieces of material in some places and if you turned the wrong way you had threads sticking out.  Awful, awful, awful.  Look elsewhere, please.  They did great embroidery work, but it couldn't hide the fact that my dress was poorly made :(

  3. Hub has a black tungsten carbide ring, and I bought a thin silver coloured one for myself, but I actually had an allergic reaction to it and ended up sending it back and getting a titanium one instead.  I like titanium and tungsten because they're a little more durable than gold, but as I learned (the hard way I might add!), if you have nickel allergies then stay away from tungsten because they usually use nickel as a binder in tungsten carbide rings.  If you're worried about allergies, titanium all the way!  If allergies aren't an issue, then I think it just comes down to the style of the ring itself.  I will say though since I've had both types of rings that tungsten looks like a dark grey, looks VERY different from white gold, but titanium looks only a shade darker.  When I wear it with my engagement ring (which is white gold) it isn't nearly as noticable that it's a different colour.

Those first two Julietta gowns are definitely new!  My inspiration gown was a Julietta too, 3052.  I loved the original, but unfortunately my knock-off was not quite as fabulous.  It's a whole lot of pages back.  So from ordering my own Julietta knock-off, I have a couple of pieces of advice:

    1.  Do NOT, under ANY circumstances, order from fushopping.com.  Ever.  Unless you want to open your gown and cry for three weeks because your wedding day is ruined and eat every brownie that looks at you funny.

    2.  Find a company that has a bit of experience in plus-sized gowns.  You can see 5,000 pictures of a size two gown that came out beautifully, but if they are not familiar with how a plus-sized gown is different from a tiny gown, then you may have a problem.  Ask to see pictures of some "curvacious" dresses they've made in the past.

    3.  Don't give them all of your money before the gown has even been started!  A few companies that the ladies on here have used have allowed you to pay a deposit (something like half the price) and then pay the rest once you've seen pictures and you're happy with it.

    4. Ask for LOTS of pictures!  And not on a hanger, ask for it to be put on a model if at all possible, even if the models they have are too big or too small, it will at least give you a bit of an idea than just hung on a hanger.

    5.  If there's anything you question and would like more pictures or detailed pictures, GET THEM BEFORE IT LEAVES THEIR STORE/FACTORY!  I questioned the "belly" of my dress but thought "Nah, that looks okay" and was in tears when I saw it in person.  It cost me over $300 to repair once it got here!

I think that's it.  If anyone else has any points to add, feel free, or correct me on some if need be :)

I forgot two points!  doh.gif  Darn Christmas brain!!!

    6.  Have your measurements taken by a good seamstress, preferably someone with experience in dress making.  Mine were taken by a dress maker and they were spot on!

    7.  A corset back is much more forgiving!  Not everyone likes the corset back, but if you do like the look of a corset, it can be much more forgiving in the case that your measurements are slightly off.  My dress had a zipper back, and although my dress fit perfectly when it arrived, we had more pictures taken a month after the wedding (waiting for good weather in Newfoundland takes FOREVER!) and by then I had lost about 10 pounds.  Not a big deal, but it made the dress a little baggy, especially in the bust area, and if it was a strapless dress (thankfully it wasn't) then it would have been a disaster!

The dress is only about $600 but when you add alterations, shoes, undergarments, etc, it adds up. So if anyone knows anything, or has any opinions, please please share!! i would love to know which you like best!! and the companies you have had the best experiences with!! Thanks ladies!!  I was so self-conscious in the dress originally, I was afraid I was never going to want to see my pictures.  But I have to say, even though I've only seen two pictures, I would be proud to hang one on my wall :)  And that's a good thing, because I paid more for the pictures than I did any other single aspect of our wedding!  They were almost twice the price of our reception lol

And I have to say, Miss Kim, I LOVE your dress!!!  It looks absolutely beautiful!  I really wish I had checked this forum BEFORE I ordered my dress online, because you ladies are so helpful!!

  7. Alright ladies, I haven't been here in a bit, but I finally got a couple of pro pics (literally a couple, two! lol)  So here's the best of the two that shows off the dress detail.  If you saw my previous post about how FabulousU (fushopping.com) ruined my gown (and it cost more to repair the *@#%^! than it did to buy it!), then you will notice that the "wrinkly dog belly" is gone!  (If you haven't seen it, it's WAY back there!  Maybe somewhere around 250-ish?)

My seamstress was AWESOME!!  She removed the boning from the cups (I was wearing a bra anyway), she bustled the train (that bugger was HUGE!), she shortened the gown and removed all the wrinkles!  My dress was actually a little too big on me, but it was okay because it allowed it to flow a little better :)  I had all of the "guts" removed from the gown so it fell straight and was not quite as warm (although still SUPER heavy!)

Wearing the dress when it arrived, I felt horrible.  I cried, I felt so ugly, and I felt like the fattest bride that ever lived!  But once the gathers were taken from just below the bust, it took all of the attention OFF that area and brought it back up to "the girls", and I can honestly say I felt beautiful on my wedding day, "wings" and all! lol

And I've covered up our faces because I'm making a funny face, it looks like I'm laughing at hub while he's trying to be romantic and kiss my neck.  Aaaand, I like my privacy :)

The dress actually turned out okay!  I don't have any pics of it yet because I got it back from my seamstress only a few days before the wedding, but it actually turned out very well.  It cost me $340 in alterations, but it looked good on the day of the wedding so I was impressed :)  She was able to remove all of the "wrinkles" in the belly, she added a bustle, took out the boning in the cups, and did an awesome job!  When I get my pro pics I will show you ladies how it turned out!  I guess I have to change my username as well, I'm no longer the "future" Mrs. Lewis :D

Here is my inspiration (from 2 different dresses, the bottom is my main concern)

Here are the first pictures they sent me and the changes I asked them to make:

    reception dress revisions 3.jpg

And here is the way the dress looks now:

    IMG_5636.jpg

    Any ideas?

I also agree that more length = more "flowy" lines, however I also have to add that the angle of the split looks a little different on both dresses.  On the top "long" skirt, the angle of the split looks very tight and the skirt appears to be wider at the bottom, so it gathers more as it falls away from your hips.  The bottom "short" skirt seems to have a wider split, and the material seems as though it is just barely wide enough at the bottom.  I'm not sure if that makes sense or not, it makes sense in my head at least?  Let me try to attach a paint drawing (don't judge, I'm not artist!  lol)

    skirts.jpg

Okay, it's a crude drawing, I know.  But it helps explain my point.  It looks like the top skirt opens wider at the bottom (if the material was laid flat and completely spread out) and has a smaller split while the second skirt doesn't open nearly as wide at the bottom and has a wider split.  So I think if they make the skirt wider at the bottom, your problem MAY be solved.  I'm no dress maker, but after watching my seamstress pretty much re-build my dress from scratch, I've noticed how material tends to fall naturally and that's what it looks like to me.  Again, I may very well be wrong, but it's worth a try :)

    DON'T DO IT!!!

If you look back quite a few pages you'll see my post with my dress from Fabulous U.  Their initials are FU, take that as your warning...  The embroidery on my gown is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but the dress left the factory with a rip right across the top of the skirt that they tried to hide behind some hideous ruching.  I say "left the factory" because I know for a FACT it did not happen during shipping.  And I left a comment on their Rate Point that is linked to their page and it never showed up.  Notice how there are no negative comments?  They are obviously taking them out and only leaving the positive ones.

I paid $269.99 for my dress, plus paid for express shipping only to have it shipped regular post and when it showed up my tiara was also destroyed because it was wrapped in a thin foam wrapper (not styrofoam, more like a fabric-like foam).  I'm now paying $350+ to have my dress repaired, and I'm not sure if it can even be repaired to my liking.  Please, please, please choose someone else!  There are companies that offer better quality for a better price!

  11. I'm so impressed with my jewelry I have to add to this thread!  I bought my necklace and earrings from Momma Goddess Treasures on Etsy.  Trudy is an absolute DREAM to deal with!  I wanted something to match my shoes for the wedding, and my necklace matches PERFECTLY!  It was a great price, and it is absolutely gorgeous!  I had some trouble when it came to shipping, but it totally wasn't her fault (she's in the US, USPS told her that a Canadian postal code wasn't necessary so she left it off the package, it passed customs but couldn't go any further into Canada without a postal code and got returned to her, so she sent it to me express post <3 ).

Here is a picture of my necklace, earrings and shoes (to see how they match):

    ShoesNecklace.jpg

I don't really do pearls, but these are gorgeous.  They look a little dull in the picture, but in real life they're really shiny.  I'm SO happy, I'd recommend her to anyone!  And she totally customized it for me based on one of her designs (different colours, different length, more pearls).  If you're looking for jewelry, especially if you're not a "pearl" person, then look her up.  She's amazing :)

I've tried the original dress on back in June and fell in love with it, but didnt want to spend the $1400 for the original dress...after doing some research, i decided to go with bigdaydress and ordered it in July. And I have to admit: I looooooooooove the dress!! I wanted some changes to the original dress (no shoulder strap, add beadings to bodice) and they did it exactly how i wanted it. I love it! However, in one of the pics, it seems like the right part of the bodice is uneven. I dont know, if it's because they didnt tie it in the back correctly in that pic or if it's really uneven like it looks like... I've emailed them about it... let's see what they say... what do you think?

Here is the original dress from Demetrios:

    14658-8534.jpg

This is the pic that makes me a bit worried... the right upper part of the bodice looks off. I dont notice it in the other pics though - is it because they tied it incorrectly or weird angle or something??

The dress looks gorgeous!  I see what you're saying about that little area though.  Ask for more pictures from more angles and ask for a closeup of that particular spot.  It's just as easy to take five pictures as it is to take one once the dress is on the model :)  Learn from my experience!  Don't just pass it off as "maybe it's a bad angle/tieup job", make sure it's suitable to you before it leaves the factory.  It's easier for them to fix it than it is for you once you receive it.

The dress is beautiful, you made a great choice :)

$650 is still a HELL of a lot less than you would have paid in store AND your dress is custom!!!!! Take a deep breath, pour that drink and relax.... you will have a $650 dress you love as opposed to a $300 dress you are self conscious in!!!!!  It is your day so you deserve to be happy and just think... it could be worse... you could be ordering a whole NEW dress!!!!

Definitely check out Barefoot Tess, they were great to deal with and have a beautiful selection of big shoes :)

I'm a little less mad about the extra money now, I realize that it could have certainly been a complete disaster, but thankfully the rest of the dress was so well made that it was only the front layer of chiffon that was giving me so much trouble.  If I had to order a whole new dress now to arrive for our wedding in September I would not be able to sleep until the bugger arrived lol

And besides, FI got a $400 suit, so I've told him that as the bride I'm supposed to look better than him, so that requires more money!  He kinda gave me this look: blink.gif  But then he realized that he's not just marrying Mrs. Right, but my first name is "Always", so he agreed lol

I guess that's how I need to keep looking at this whole situation... Thanks for helping me see that the glass is actually half full cheers.gif

  15. Well ladies, all is not COMPLETELY lost!  My awesome seamstress is able to repair my dress!  She will remove the front panel and replace it with a new piece of chiffon.  And my replacement tiara arrived with a pearl "apology" necklace, the tiara was in okay shape but a few of the stones had come loose and I had to fix them.  Nothing terrible this time thankfully!

Now the bad news... It's going to cost me $350 or more to fix my gown sad.gif  I can have the rip just tacked in place and it would only cost about $150, but I would still have those ruches!  If I was a super-skinny bride I may not care about having a wrinkly belly.  But there is enough emphasis on my belly already, I don't need that ruching to draw attention to it.  So, my $250 gown became a $300 gown which is now a $650+ gown... *sigh*... I need a drink!

Ladies, I have good news (especially if you're American), I found my shoes on Barefoot Tess (barefoottess.com) and they have some GORGEOUS shoes and only carry sizes 9 and up!!  Here are my fabulous shoes, I bought the shoe clips on Etsy so they'd match my necklace:

Here are the shoes by themselves:

    madelinegabeanblack013.jpg

Aren't they fabulous for a size 12?  I'm completely in love with them!  They are a little big on me though, so if you're going to order any Madeline shoes and you can sometimes fit into a size 11, then maybe go with the 11 instead of the 12 :)  I got them delivered to Canada and had to pay somewhere around $20 in tax when they arrived, but if you're American then that shouldn't be a problem.

Now back to the dress talk offtopic.gif  lol!

I was so upset to read this because i'm considering this company because of your older posts and their facebook page. They really need to inspect their dresses before shippment. Maybe you should warn the facebook page people as well.

I should probably clarify.  They still did an AMAZING job on the dress.  The embroidery is absolutely perfect and better than I was even expecting!  It's just this rip and these wrinkles.  I didn't get to see the front of the dress before it was shipped.  They had a hard time taking pics for me because they didn't have a model big enough to put the dress on to take pictures.  Maybe if I had seen the full front of the gown before it was shipped I may have picked up on it.  So it is possible that this is a fluke and is a one-off situation.  I do know ladies who have had great success with these guys, that's why I chose them in the first place.

    Gathers

I haven't sewn anything in a really long time, but IMHO if your seamstress lets out the gathers on the right side of the dress, you will get the lifted-gather on your left hip the way you wanted it.

    Rip

I suspect that the dress was ripped early and that is why the gathers were bunched on the right to 'hide' the rip. If the right hip was left free the rip would be more visible.

    Shape

What I see as the biggest difference between the inspiration pic and your dress is that your dress looks more like a sheath instead of being A-line. You didn't say if you asked for that change in the dress. If not to get what could be a more-flattering shape of dress will require a new structuring of the entire skirt of the dress. This could probably be done because of the empire waist ban on the dress, but it might be costly. Considering that you probably got your dress at a good deal, you probably will still make out ahead with an altered dress and getting it customed designed (the pink embellishments).

Taking all three points together, I think restructuring the skirt might not be a bad idea. Don't worry. All is not lost, you still have multiple options reworking the dress, ordering a new one, or buying one.

    I hope this helps.

I'm hoping that it can still have the draped gathers like on the original gown, but I'm worried that this rip will throw a wrench in the whole thing.  And I'm thinking they were trying to hide the rip too.  It wouldn't be a huge deal if I liked having a wrinkly belly lol  A little hand sewing and the rip would be fully hidden.

I didn't ask for the dress to be taken from an a-line to a sheath, but I have such a weird shape (I'm pretty much a cylinder!  blink.gif) so I'm thinking because of my shape it just came out like that...  If she can adjust the skirt then I say all the power to her!

Then they must have almost had a heart attack making my dress!  lol  I'm definitely above a size 16, and I'm 5'10" barefoot, over 6' in my heels lol  My hollow-to-hem was 160"  lol

Me too darling, did you see my picture I posted?  lol  We can be mutants together!

  19. I could order another dress, but I'd be cutting it VERY close on time!  I think I'm better off just getting my seamstress to salvage this one.  Even if she has to take off the chiffon layer on the front of the skirt and replace it, it's better than any other alternative I have right now.

I contacted the company and showed them the pictures and they apologized and they're sending me a new tiara and a necklace set as an apology.  The dress isn't completely ruined, most people probably won't even notice the rips in the fabric as they are mostly hidden by those "wrinkles", it just upsets me that it wasn't picked up on and now I have to try and fix it.  It can definitely be hidden behind the "wrinkles" with a little hand sewing, but that means that the wrinkles are there to stay :(

The rest of the dress is perfect and completely flawless, it's just that stupid rip and those ugly wrinkles!

  20. Ladies, I received my dress today from Fabulous U and as soon as I saw it I cried my heart out... But unfortunately they weren't happy tears... I bought my dress from this site because of a great recommendation from a co-worker of FMIL.  She was so happy with the dress she received and told me to buy my dress there as well.  I had such high hopes, now I just hope someone can fix the problems!

Just as a reminder, here is the original gown:

    Dress.jpg

The embroidery was very well done, and the gown is MOSTLY well made (has boning in the breast area and through the sides) but it's torn!!  And it was obviously torn before it left the factory because it was shipped in a plastic bag inside a box and the plastic bag didn't even have a single puncture or tear.  Here are some pics I took:

    DSC02726.JPG

    DSC02727.JPG

    DSC02729.JPG

The tear goes right along the lowest "wrinkle" in the dress.  They tried to hide it behind said "wrinkle", but it keeps popping out on my right side (left side of the pic above).  Plus, those "wrinkles look like they're just that, wrinkles!  It was supposed to be gathered on one side and then just let fall on the other side, but this looks like I've got a belly like a wrinkly dog.

Now I'm an emotional person, I'm a sook, I know.  But I honestly was devastated when I saw this rip in my gown.  I cried my heart out sad.gif  And I ordered a tiara with my gown, they packaged it inside my gown and the box was completely crushed when it got here (which would be okay if it weren't for the tiara!).  So my tiara was destroyed beyond repair and my dress had a rip in it... I wish momma had told me exactly HOW many of these days I was gonna have....

What should I do ladies?  I'm getting married on September 26th, do I even have enough time for another gown?  Can this one be salvaged?

Thanks!  I'm so excited, I wasn't really expecting it to turn out as beautiful as it is :)  A lot of plus-sized gowns end up looking like a tent undecided.gif  I'm so happy that I wont' be wearing a tent!  lol

Thank you for introducing this company! i have been lurking through this thread for a long time and what I love about the company you suggested is their website and facebook page. I really love that they have posted youtube vidoes and that they have also come out with their own line of bridal gowns. The big thing that got me interested as well is the facebook page showing even more real gowns that show their workmanship and show real opinions as well. They seem to be plus size friendly as well which is kinda shocking considering some of the problems that other brides have had. Please post pictures of you in the dress on here and the facebook page. it would be very useful.

I'm hoping to order a gown in nov or dec 2011 for my may 2012 wedding. I'm trying right now to save up the money becausue they are a little higher than companies found on the dhgate website.

Oh question how long did it take to make and send you pictures and can you please post when you recieve it so that i know about timing. Also, if you were slapped with Canadian duty and how much did they charge for shipping as they don't seem to provide free shipping like other companies that have been suggested. when you recieve it can you please comment on structure of the dress? like if the dress has boning or built in bra! Thank you for the information and love your dress!

I love that they have a facebook page too, it let me see some "real" opinions before I ordered.  And all of the pics they posted let me see some of the work they've done and I was impressed enough to trust them with the most important dress I'll wear in my life!  And they certainly seem plus-size friendly, I can speak from experience.  I actually had one measurement that I couldn't enter in their "customization" section of the webpage because it was an inch larger than their largest available and I was able to just e-mail them my measurements instead.  They don't always have big models to hang the dresses on to send pics (hence why mine is on a hanger) but they certainly try their best!

I will post pictures of me in the dress after the wedding, but I don't want FI to see me in the dress prior to so there will be no pics until my pro pics.  FI is very sneaky and excited to see me in my dress lol

It took about a month for them to make my dress, but it can take up to two months.  I'm using expedited shipping to Newfoundland, which cost $60, but it's supposed to take 3 business days to get here.  They do have other shipping options, you just have to go partially through the checkout before the options are listed. BUT!  Keep an eye out for deals!  They offer percent discounts at different times (and sometimes if you e-mail them with a question they'll send you an offer!) and sometimes they've offered free shipping :)

I'll definitely update when I receive the gown, but as far as I know it has hidden boning.  All of their gowns have some degree of boning (so I read somewhere on their site) but the amount depends on the gown.  Mine will probably have a minimal amount because it has straps and is made of chiffon, but I would imagine a strapless gown made of satin or a thicker material would probably have more boning.  And they're good to work with, you can always tell them you want more or less when you place your order :)

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't be hit too hard with duty!  I'm thinking I'll get smacked with taxes though, which are 13% in Newfoundland sad.gif

  22. Hi ladies!

I made a post a while ago about fushopping.com where I ordered my dress, and I got my pics from them today!  I'm so excited!  I figured I would share in case another bride is thinking about using this company, they are great!  Customer service is quick, you can even chat online with them at certain hours of the day, and they're great to deal with!  I'll stop typing now, because I know you ladies are all about the pictures:

I'm so excited!  I can't wait to get it in person!  And I got a steal of a deal, especially with all the embroidery! (Which I think they do by hand.  I know the beading is all done by hand at least!)  I'm done gushing, I'm just really in love with the pics they sent me woot.gif
