Airline Luggage and Baggage Fees and Policies for 2012

Giraffe-Luggage.jpgHello BDW,

I have compiled some baggage fees that the airlines are now imposing.  You can use the chart below to give you an idea of what extra fees may be charged to you.  Please keep in mind, this is just the information that I found but it is not guaranteed as accurate so you must confirm the fee amount and policies directly with the airline you are using.  Also these fees can and may change at any time.  I will try to keep it updated but again, no guarantees.  BE SURE TO CHECK WITH THE AIRLINE YOU ARE FLYING ON TO CONFIRM THE FEES AND POLICIES!

If you have any other airline fees you would like to add, put then in the comments section of this article and I will add them :)

I think the fees vary if you are flying outside of the US. I am on American, flying from the US to Jamaica and the 1st bag is free.

I just flew AirTran to Mexico from Baltimore and we paid $20 for the first bag, then $25 for the second. Both were right at 50 pounds.

Thank you for putting this together. Some airlines (like American) just recently changed their policy so if you booked before they made the change you got the old policy.

My experience is that sometimes, Extra bag fees $$$ may add up so much that buying a gate upgrade may suddenly benefit you with the additional pieces you can carry on per pax. Suddenly, your upgrade is a strategic one and your now flying in comfort to get married... may or may not work out in all areas. I know for example, leaving Cun to Atl, delta hardly EVER sells first class tickets. Problem with this system is it is last minute gate upgrade vs knowing all this ahead of time and forking over big $$ to by the premium ticket.

I hear Southwest and AirTran merged, but Air Tran still has baggage fees. Anyone know anything about this? Will Air Tran eventually lose the fees? Thanks for posting this!

I flew Delta out of the country and 2 bags were free, but if it's domestic flights then the fees are charged.

I know United offers a first bag free when you fly international. They also offer first bag free domestic for you and guest if you have a Mileage Plus Credit Card.
