How to start looking??

You guys must be able to tell from my posts that I have no sisters who have gotten married...because I have NO IDEA what I'm doing most of the time.

I need help regarding when/how to start looking for wedding dresses. The wedding is 1 year from today. Too early to start?

I think I want to go to a salon and try on all different styles so at least I will know what looks good/bad on me. I'm just scared if I get a dress to early I will be bored with it in a year.

How long does it usually take to order/get a dress from a shop?

kate, start by looking at bridal mags to see what dresses you like...then start going to shops or if their is a desginer you like, see when they are having a trunk show or fashion show in your area.

i did this at saks and neimans...i was able to see the vera wang, carolina herrera, and monique lhuillier shows.

if you see a dress you fancy and you try it on and it looks great on you, ou have time to find it cheaper etc...that is what i did...i tried on my dress in sept. but did not buy it until february because i wanted to see if it was the right dress for me and to see if i could find it cheaper (and i did).

I agree, start looking at magazines to see what catches your eye. But keep in mind, what catches your eye may not always be the best style for your body, so pick out a couple styles, and keep an open mind. I got engaged at the end of Sept and my wedding is in June, so I didn't have a ton of time to shop for dresses - but luckily I found what I wanted pretty quickly.

They tell you to allow about 6 mos for a designer, custom made dress from my experience. If you can find a dress you love off the rack or a sample, or "once wed" dress - even better! I don't know your budget, but just be careful of trying on dresses that aren't within your budget - many of us have done this, fallen in love with the dress, and then we're torn as to what to do! You either try to forget about the dress (I tried this method), try to find it at a sample sale, or on a "used" wedding dress site or ebay, get a knock-off made, or just suck it up and buy it (this is what I ended up doing).

But, there are also girls on here who have done what you are afraid of - but a dress pretty early on, and then wanted something else. So when you have found the one you wanted, maybe keep looking a little, go back and try your dress on a few times to make sure you love it every time, and then buy it!

I think you should just go into a store and start trying stuff on - something that looks great in a magazine might not suit you, so you need to actually see the dresses on to get a feel for what works and what you like
