Symbolic vs Civil ceremony?

Recommended Posts

We're planning on going to city hall before we go to Mexico, and then having a symbolic wedding there.

For us, it is to a large degree about piece of mind. The last thing we want to have happen is find out there was some tiny little glitch in the process and that our marriage wasn't legal. Since most of the documentation will be in Spanish, it just seemed easier.

That's how it works here anyway, you can have someone special (who's qualified) or just the town clerk. It takes 10 weeks they said to get the marriage cert (which we need to get the symbolic wedding for free) so time is ticking!!
Deb.... Julissa told me they don't need any documents to perform the symbolic ceremony.... we can even get legally married AFTER when we return from Ocean Blue. I spoke to another bride.. and Julissa never asked to see the documents.

I still recommend you ask Julissa and print the answer she gives you... just in case it changes once you get there :) That's what I will be doing :)

BTW, Julissa told me that we ''could'' tip the person will be be playing the part of the judge....she told me that most Resorts charge around $300us to do it. I spoke to a bride that got married there and she said Julissa recommended she tip the person $40us. :) Hope this helps :)

  • 2 months later...

here is the info as far as i was told when i called city of mississauga:

1. marriage license ($135)

2. city clerk to perform your civic ceremony ($250; $300 if outside business hours)

3. 30 minute use of the chapel or garden at the civic centre ($65)

i think that is all.

We are dong the symbolic as well.

We rented a private small function room at the Common Man for this Saturday night and the JP is meeting us there.

Both our parents and my cousin and his wife will be present. We are not telling the rest of the family. They will just think we are getting married on the island.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
