I've read that it is not proper to put wording of wedding attire on the invitation unless it is black tie or black tie optional. So I'm trying to decide whether to put it on my insert or to just put it on my website, or maybe neither. Mostly, I'm having trouble with coming up with the right phrase.

My wedding is on the sand on the beach, and the place just has a palapa and I'm renting a dance floor (which willl be placed on the sand), but I want an elegant beach wedding - like how people get dressed up on the beach in movies in Havana or Miami or wherever...

Was thinking "Tropical Cocktail Attire, jackets & ties optional" -- to encourage women to wear warm weather cocktail dresses and men to wear linen or lightweight suits if they have them, and otherwise to just come dressed nicely in a dressy shirt and pants, without being too hot or uncomfortable. But then I'm wondering if I should just skip putting anything, and if people will just assume they should dress like they would for a summer wedding? I don't want people to come too dressed up and then be hot and uncomfortable, but I don't want it to be just sundresses and polo shirts either...Should I skip putting something on the insert and just write some dressing advice on my wedding event webpage?

I think that in situations like these (weddings/parties/celebrations), people appreciate the direction. I definitely think you can include it.

I would probably just put it on the website. Then, you can include an insert with your invitations that directs people to your wedding website for more information. You can phrase it in a cute manner on the website ... "tropical cocktail attire" or "beach chic" or "resort wear." I then when on to give examples on my page.

I don't think you need to put it in the invite, but I would definitely put it on your website or wedding update, etc. We called ours beach chic, and gave examples. We were looking for a little less formal, but this is what's on my website (liberally borrowed from other BDW gals):

So what do I wear to the wedding? We're calling it Beach Chic - no need to wear a ballgown or tux, but its still a wedding! Ladies, a fun summer sundress, skirt or capris would be perfect. It may get chilly at night, so think about bringing a pashmina or light jacket.

Guys, linen pants or khakis are great with a short sleeve button down or hawaiian shirt. No ties or shorts please :-)

Be kind to your feet - we will be walking in the sand. Flip flops are appropriate for everyone, including the bride and groom!

Hopels, thats great, thanks for the wording!

I "oopsed" and did a very similar thread without searching first, but I think I'm gonna stick with the Beach Formal wording, along with the description above.

This thread is a little outdated, so I'm just wondering what everyone is currently doing, if anything, in terms of commuicating wedding attire to their guests. I was thinking of putting something on my website, such as the previously mentioned "beach formal," but I'm looking of a cute way of saying it...I would like to discourage people from wearing jeans or jean shorts and encourage them to wear flip flops as opposed to formal dress shoes.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
