My fiance and I are putting the deposit down today for our Nov. 7-09 wedding at Las Caletas (if we can get in touch with Nicole...she's a busy girl). After getting off the phone with my mom today I discovered that she's really, really upset that we're planning a wedding in Mexico. With the economy as horrendously ugly as it is right now she doesn't think that anyone will be able to show up and that we will end up being heartbroken over paying a lot of money for less than 10 guests. So..because she's my mother..she has put serious doubts in my mind. How many people showed up for you? What price do people consider acceptable for travel and airfare packages? Ugh. This is so frustrating. We haven't been able to get travel details hammered out yet because agents are telling us that airlines don't release flights until 11 months prior to the travel date.
I know that the main focus shouldn't be about the wedding (blahblah) but the marriage but I am really stressed out. Go figure, a stressed out bride to be.
    Any suggestions?
    Hi There!

Well I know how you feel it's tough since the economy is bad right now. One of my bridesmaids doesn't think she will be agle to make it to my wedding in February now which I am fine with, I want her there but I know it's expensive so you just have to roll with it.But I agree with everyone else that if Mexico is really where you want to get married then you should do it no matter what, with that said you will have to be comfortable with the fact that not as many people could come. In the end it's about you and your fiance so just remember that.

Tara - great pics! I love that you posted these, thanks!!

jweekly - Honestly, the economy IS in the crapper right now. My guests have stopped booking for now. But, I think things will pick up after the Holidays. We planned far out in advance (2 Years!) so no one has any MAJOR excuses jk I do have 1 BM who is for sure not coming, and my uncle may not be able to come due to finances, but these are things we knew going into it. We also planned in our budget for a few "special" people - certain people that we picked out beforehand who if they could not come simply because of money, then we knew we'd have funds set aside to help them out. There are one or two on that list who we would pay their entire trip just to be there (like my MOH - luckily though it looks like she'll be able to afford it on her own). You may want to do some things like this. Especially because these are hard times. Just some ideas. All in all, yes - it is your wedding. But will you really be happy if there were only 5-10 people there? You've got to be prepared for the worst. If you're OK with that, then go ahead (and realize more people will most likely come). What is it they say "Prepare for the worst, plan for the best" ...? (or have I completely butchered that..? lol)

And, you've got a great forum of girls to help you through the rough times (which there will be! lol) if you do decide to go with a DW. It is an amazing experience, all said and done....

      I hope that helped some.

We had 24 people attend our wedding in Las Caletas, Mexico on May 24th, 2009!

We all stayed at The Marriott in P.V., and Honeymooned at The Royal Plantation in Ochos Rios, Jamaica!

        well said Jamie

You are right with the economy in the crapper right now we too are seeing our guest list decrease. Initially we thought maybe 35-40 guests but now that has been cut in half just because people can't afford it.

My FI and I are completley ok with the list getting smaller...we are going to have a big 'ol backyard BBQ for EVERYONE when we get back home...we are perfectly content with the possiblity of a just a few close friends and family in Mexico!

do you know the name? i think Caletas works with several photogs, and these photogs don't necessarily work FOR Vallarta Adventures, but WITH them, make sense? so if you know the name of the photog we might be able to help more!

Honestly, most of the people we invited showed up - but this was also in 2007! wow, that seems so long ago.

anyway. we had our heart set on a wedding on the beach - there was no getting around that. if no one could come, we might have considered doing it in the US somewhere, like S. Cal, but honestly, not sure that would have been much cheaper since people were going to have to travel regardless.

Our "ideal number" to hit was 20, and I do think we will hit that, which makes me happy. I just found out that my favorite Aunt and her family might not be able to come though (not due to money issues, but due to the kids school!) so that is a big bummer because there's really nothing we can do to help since it's not a money issue... That will knock 5 of our favorite people off the list.. This made me sad to hear but I am so grateful when people tell me these things in advance! Then if they ARE able to come it's like a bonus! :)

And Andi - I was wavering on the AHR type thing when we returned because we figured that would mainly consist of people who were already at the wedding. However, now that some of my close family who would probably be able to make something in Dallas might not be coming I think we will totally do this too! Two weddings! Maybe we could even do a little vow ceremony too... that would be really sweet

            All kindsa possibilities!

DWs are like a Bi-Polar person - when they're down, they're DOWN and when they're up, they're UP!

Well I know how you feel. I got married and it wasn't really bad yet, but we had all kinds of excuses why people wouldn't come. I was seriously considering cancelling because I didn't want that disappointment of walking down the isle and only seeing 10 guests. It really broke my heart to know that everyone would not see me get married. We worked through it and had our hearts set on LC. We ended up having 13 guests and they were only parents, stepparents and siblings. PERFECT!!!! We couldn't have asked for a better time. The amount of people was just fine and I wasn't disappointed at all and I didn't miss anyone. When we got back and were showing everyone pictures they were like ah man we should have gone. Haha well you didn't and you missed out suxs for you would basically be what I would tell them but nicer.

Bottome line...do what you want. Don't let anyone talk you out of it. The economy is going to turn around. The peso has already dropped in value compared to the dollar so there is a good chance that room rates will actually go down. Everything will be slightly cheaper. If you want to keep it as cheap as possible don't book it around holidays or busy travel seasons and go with less expensive hotels or let them choose for themselves so they can fit it into their budget. Vacation packages through southwest or us air are really a good way to go.

You guys have no idea how much the words of encouragement have helped me out through this in the past couple of days.
You are all SO right. As long as Vanessa and I are there the day will be perfect. It's our wedding, and while I would love to have the ceremony and reception bulging with guests that isn't the most important part of the day. I have my heart set on LC and that's where we're going to do it. I think, in the end, we will be happily surprised at how many people actually show up. I am back to being insanely, ridiculously, euphorically excited about being a Las Caletas bride! The economy does suck right now...but what could be less romantic than planning one of the biggest days of our lives around Capitol Hill?...
                Not gonna do it.
And you know what? There are always going to be people who complain. It's human nature and an area in which my family specializes in (kidding). I know they'll be happy on the day of and that's what counts.

That is a great attitude to have! Sounds like your heart is set on LC...and so that is where I think you should have your wedding.

Also I don't think it is possible to EVER make EVERYONE happy. even if you had your wedding in your hometown there would still probably be people that would not be happy with the location, decorations, invitations, etc, etc. and that is just how people are!

It is your day and you should have the wedding of your dreams!...wherever that may be!

I totally agree w/ Andi!! Go with what you originally planned and don't let anything get in your way...Your family will fall in love with the idea eventually and even more so once they actually see LC. It's gorgeous!!

I am also looking to book Las Caletas for Nov. 2009 early next week. We first thought our guest list was too big, but with the economy, I think many people won't be able to come. However, I'm not going to let it get me down. I love LC and we'll have a big reception back in Mpls once we return! We may be there only days apart! - Trisha
