Congrats! That is great! I am so happy for you! I bet you can try to ask for more time off! I was also thinking about something else, if your company is closed on holidays, that is a plus too. I have never had a job (except Dairy Queen) that was closed for holidays so I know that it makes a big difference, especially if the holiday is a monday or friday.

Definitely negotiate for more time off! I am a recruiter and anyone who has been working for a couple years always ask for more vacation time. We can usually give up to 5 additional days, but if the person leaves the company they will only be paid out for the # of vacation days per our company policy at the time they leave. Our standard policy is 10 vac days, 3 personal days, 10 sick days, and 9 Holidays. You get bumped up to 15 days on your 4th year. Are you OK with everything else in the offer? If you are just tell them that the offer sounds great, and you are ready to accept but would like to know if it is possible to receive additional vacation days. Let them know what you currently get and see if they can make a compromise.

Heidi! Congratulations! I know you'd been wanting to switch jobs pretty bad You absolutely can negotiate days off --- tell them the only thing keeping you from accepting is the lack of vacation days and see if they can work something out. After all, if they created a position for you, they must want you pretty bad and should be a little flexible when it comes to the vacation days. 5 days seems like a really low amount... I had 15 days PTO my first year at my job... Especially since you are getting married in 2008 you should tell them vacation days are a big priority for you because of that. If they won't budge, it won't hurt to have tried!

Heidi, first off congratulations!!! That is great news. Second, yes you can negotiate time off, I have done that with all my jobs. So, just do it. All they can do is say no. I say you take it anyway, you are miserable in your job and that is not worth any of the extra perks, you need to be happy because you spend a lot of time at your job.

Yes, you can definitely negotiate vacation time. When I got the offer for my current job I told them that I was coming from a company where I had 3.5 weeks of vacation time and I didn't want to lose it. They ended up giving me 4 weeks! Not to say that this always happens, but it's worth a shot; the worst they can say is no.

there's definitely something to be said for pure sanity. i know you can't quantify it in $$ or time off or anything - but it's worth SOOOO much! I know how unhappy you've been at your current job, with a B*TCH of a boss, so I am so happy for you! The time off does sound rough - but you'll make it work, and that's great about letting you take the time for the wedding, even if it is unpaid. CONGRATS!

just read this. ABSOLUTELY!!! granted, i haven't had a job w/PTO for a decade, lol. but i know you can negotiate this just like you can negotiate any other benefit like pay or health benefits. often times when companies have a scrict salary range, they will negotiate here instead.
