Return the China or Buy More?

Recommended Posts

I'm not planning on registering for fine china. But my family never really had fancy dinners, so I don't think i'll ever need them. If you think you may use them, than keep them and get more. But if you don't think you will, I would return them and get something that you really want and can use!

First, to answer the question: KEEP IT and ADD MORE!

I registered for china b/c I've always wanted that sexy, grown up, sophisticated choice for dinner parties, etc. I didn't think we would get any at all. On the contrary, I received more china than I did any other gifts. 16 dinner plates and 8 full piece place settings! And I LOVE it! It's so fun!

And you don't have to wait until a special occasion to use it at all! We use ours when we have take-out...it makes the meal taste so much better! And it's fun to dress up the table with nice china and our crystal wine glasses, have some Target wine and eat pizza!

So, that's my opinion...plus, it's fun for my mom to see our china, get out hers, add pieces to hers now, mix & match, etc. I really think in the long run you'll want a great mix of it all.

Lots of mixed opinions here, thanks everyone!

My mother has a beautiful white set with a platinum band (20 settings) that I stand to inherit...also my grandmother's china will be passed onto me. So at some point I'll have China coming out of my ears...lol

I'm not into China but I did pick the style for the registry and I really like the style. Just wondering if I like it enough to collect it? And if I'll be doing it because of tradition rather than actually wanting it? Hmmmm....

Thankfully China was passed down to me. But otherwise I wouldn't register for it. It just seems silly to me (I'm sorry everyone I offend). But to eat off of a $150 plate is just obsurd! Why can't you eat off of a $20 plate? Buy some nice napkins and napkin rings and place that on top of the plate. It'll look beautiful.

I don't know, I would use the money on something more important and more useful. IMHO

I have some from my first wedding (in 199cool.gif - so we didn't register for any. And I've used the stuff ONCE! Only because I am just not an entertainer - or when I do, it's BBQ type style.

But here's what I hate - if you do like the stuff, and think you'll want it eventually - you should get as much as you can now (as much as you want, rather). Since styles often get discontinued, it's harder to add on later.

since you don't seem like you'd use it much now, and you will be getting grandma and mom's in the future - maybe you don't need to spend the money on that stuff now. just my opinion! mine just takes up space - and i've had it for almost 10 years!

I'm like Jill - I'm the type of person that looks forward to setting a beautiful, perfect table and having fancy dinner parties - LOVE that!!!! (Oh and BTW Jill, I would love to see the china you have.)

However, if that's not really your style or if you know you're going to come into a lot of china at some point, then maybe you should return it and get something you will use now. Besides, like others have said, styles get discontinued CONSTANTLY - it's so annoying. So I wouldn't bank on being able to add to your current china for years to come. Either buy the rest of it now or return it.

That's my china pattern!!!

I was totally against registering for china, originally because I come from a family that buys their "fancy" plates from those boxed sets that cost $50 for 8 settings. Then I noticed that I was very hostile whenever FMIL mentioned it... I even caught myself telling my mother that FI's mom was "pretentious and stuck up" for pushing it. Finally it occured to me that I was being totally judgmental and that I really liked the idea of setting a beautiful table for holidays with my family. I just had it stuck in my head that I hated china because it was too expensive.

My mom used to set the table with my grandmother's china, but she stopped when she couldnt afford to replace all the missing pieces. As soon as I realized that I wanted to be able to set tables like she used to, I registered for the Vera Wang lace pattern... 16 settings!

Wow, sorry about going on and on... what I am trying to say (in an unnecesarrily long and round about way) is that if china is important to you, buy it. It doesn't have to be that patern - you can always go to waterford or lenox outlets and get a great deal. If you couldnt care less or rather wait to have it passed down to you, save your money and get something you really want with the 2 sets you got.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
