...are people becoming more and more rude lately?

I swear to God, I've never had so many conflicts with so many people in my entire life as I've had in the last few weeks...

Seriously - I'm a pretty easy going person, I get along with just about everyone (except DH's familiy HAH)...but there have been a TON of people lately who have pissed me off!

Examples:

I had to pay my (late smile35.gif) hydro bill just before we went on vacation, so I went into the hydro office - when you walk in the door there is a big customer service desk, kind of like a bank, with 3 computers at it. The monitors for the computers sit higher than the top of the desk so you can't see at first glance if there is someone sitting there or not. I was kinda looking around at all 3 computers to see if someone was sitting behind one when one of the ladies stood up from her desk and said (in a super snotty voice) "I'm over HERE"..ok fine I shrugged it off...well she didn't say another word to me the whole time I was there! I told her I was paying my bill...nothing...I also asked her if I could go on automatic withdrawl so I wouldn't forget to pay the bill again...she reached behind her, grabbed the form, stuck it on the desk and that was it! She was a complete snot. Talk about bad customer service!!

On Monday while we were in NY I went into Saks and wanted to buy a few things, one of which was made of glass and all packaged up so I couldn't see if it was all in one piece or not...anywho, I brought everything to the cash register and the girl, before saying anything to me, just stuck her hand out. I kinda looked at her like huh.gif and said "excuse me?" and she replied "uh...credit card?" so I (very politely) said "no, sorry I'm paying cash". I then asked her if she could open the box for the glass thing so I could make sure it wasn't broken. She said "We package things very well here you know. We've never had a problem"...so I explained (again, very politely), that I was from out of the country and I didn't want to get it home to find out that it was broken because then I wouldn't be able to return it (understandable, right? please say I'm right!). She looked at me like I was dumb and said "You can shake it if you like". I almost shook her!!

Last example - same day - we were in Saks still, taking the elevator down from the 9th floor. My sister & I were laughing about how we can't agree on whether to take the escalator or elevator because I'm afraid of one and she's afraid of the other. Anywho, Meag (my sister) says to me "what would you do if this elevator fell 9 floors? would you be scared of it then?" and this old biddy (done to the nines - fur coat, hair done, make up done, $1000 shoes, whatever) turns to her and says "This is an expensive store, you know, they take CARE of their elevators") then she looked my sister up and down with complete disgust. I couldn't believe it! Holy friggin rude...I swear..I don't care how we looked or how we were dressed or whatever, it was totally uncalled for the way she looked at my sister! I've always been taught that you should never judge a person by the way they look or dress because they could be ANYONE...at a store I used to work in this guy came in all the time dressed in the grungiest clothes and I found out after a while that the guy was a billionaire - he owns one of the biggest construction companies in Canada but if I hadn't have known I would have just assumed he was some regular joe off the street, ya know?

Anywho enough with the examples and the rant...LOL it just seems to me like there have been so many people I've come across lately who act like this, is it just me or do any of you find the same thing?? It's really starting to get under my skin :P

Yea gotta say the Saks thing doesn't surprise me. I would have looked at the grumpy old bitch and been tempted to say in a really bad NY accent-- "You fuckin' talkin' ta me?!?" Age is no excuse for bad manners. In fact, age is LESS of an excuse because these people grew up in the generation that took pride in following the rules of etiquette and showing off their manners.

I was JUST saying that today!! It's bad here because of the way the economy is, you get bad customer service and there's just nothing the employer can do about it. But its still no excuse.

Yesterday, we went to the UPS store, we walked in and another customer off to the side sneezed... so, I said, "bless you!" and he looked at me disgusted, me like I wasn't authorized to say something like that to him and he said, "no thank you". Umm ok.

Ugh, I'm sorry you've had such awful luck with rude people lately. There are folks out there that just don't care, but I always tell myself that maybe someone just ran over their puppy (or something like that) so I should give them the benefit of the doubt. I just hope you don't get the wrong impression of the U.S!

p.s. i think it's so cute how you say "anywho" and "old biddy"... wink.gif

LOL I don't have a bad impression of the US at all - I've run into just as many rude people in Canada as I have in the US - I love the US (how many foreigners have you ever heard say that lately?? LOL), half my family is there so we're there all the time! :)

Omg Melissa you are right on time with this...rude people are everywhere! Didn't you want to slap the stupid out of those people? Wow!

I was just at Walgreens today and the guy at checkout greets me with nothing. Pure silence. He rings me up, I pay him and say "thank you" and he says nothing.

(Now 20 minutes before that I had a similar experience with a surly broad at the Post Office who thought she was the Postmaster General, so I was already irritated.) I say to the Walgreens checker "there is a response to that" and he says "to what"? I tell him "to 'thank you'...I said thank you". He says "Oh" and walks off.

Wasn't there a day when you could lose your job for being a dick to a paying customer? Nobody cares anymore, I swear!

I too have noticed this. NOBODY greets you anymore at stores. My mom works retail and about a month ago we went into a store and there were to grannies working the counter and we were the only customers in the store, there used to be a time when you would get barked at by a manager for not greeting a client. Well we walked around and as we were walking out the door she shouts to us " Oh there was nothing for you today?" my mother said "Oh sure NOW you decide to acknowledge us." Not typical mom behavior.

I noticed it today at Target that the chick was not nice at all.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
