Cocktail hour music

I'm having a trio play during cocktail hour. For those that had a trio too, did you have a specific playlist you gave them? If so, do you mind posting it.

 

Or did you just tell them you wanted a specific style of music (jazzy, classical, mariachi-ish...) and left it up to them to play whatever?

i'm a musician who just joined up today...if I can offer some advice about what to expect from a trio it would be that (depending on what sort of trio you have..Mexican traditional, jazz, classical , mariachi, etc.) if you know exactly what kind of music they are going to play, then you can request songs that you like from that same style...but don't mix up the sounds TOO much...it will sound a bit weird for example to hear a Mex trio all of a sudden break out with the Police's Doo doo doo, Dah da da, ....chances are they are'nt going to do a good job and secondly , its going to be an uncomfortable few minutes of " music" ...my advice is just let the trio play what they play best and if they are open to requests then maybe try a few...

Leia , is a Mexican trio ( 3 guitars) playing? if so Trios at Mexico usually play very romantic mexican music, have you looked any mexican romantic songs, so you can let them know which to play?

thanks for the tips. i think i'll just let them know that i want romantic, soft music during cocktail hour and maybe a few requests like hotel california and girl from impanema.

 

Edna, i just youtubed some of those songs and loved them! it's perfect for the ambiance i want to create.

Do you think that if i ask them to play traditional wedding music during my ceremony (ex. cannon d...) that it'll sound weird. I'm hiring a mexican trio.

We had a trio for our ceremony and cocktail hour as well and we just let them do what they do best and they did. Our guests loved them and they added such a romantic and cultural aspect to the cocktail hour. They actually played canon D when I walked down the aisle, just confirm with them that that's what you want.

We had the full mariachi band and they played romantic music before the ceremony and I asked for "party" music for the postlude and cocktail hour. I gave them no other direction and they did a great job. My guests loved it, and it provided the perfect upbeat Mexican ambience I wanted.

For those who hired the the trio or similar, do you think one hour is enough or should we get them for two..

 

I think 1 hr playing time is fine...but maye said something about them needing to take a break every 15 min...which I don't want to sound harsh...they deserve breaks, but I would prefer to pay for only an hour and have them play an hour. It doesn't have to be consecutive...

 

Does this makes sense?

did you ever figure out your questions...

 

I just asked maye about the trio and how do they know what to play and she said she tells them and I can pick if I want the traditional wedding march (which I don't) or cannon in D. So they play that.

 

I am choosing that because it sounds so lovely and then I will just let them figure out what else they would like to play...
