Zika Virus

Are anyone else's guests panicking over the Zika Virus?

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/alert/zika-virus-mexico

It's of course very serious and something to be very aware of, but I've actually had one of my friend's who is already booked and paid post numerous articles on facebook about the virus and another about Air Canada (the airline we are flying) issuing refunds for flights... She's a nurse and I understand her worry but I hope it doesn't cause panic and encourage my guests to cancel.

Anyone else dealing with this?  And any tips for how to speak to you guests about this?

@@deecol This is what has been floating around the Azul Fives Brides lately re: Zika Virus (not sure what the source of this is though):

Zika virus hasn't been found in Quintana Roo (the state in which Riviera Maya and Cancun is located). More info: In Late 2015, 2 cases of “Zika Virus” infection were identified in the country of Mexico. The cases were found in a resident of Nuevo León, located over 2000 km (1,242 miles) away from Quintana Roo and in Chiapas, located over 1100km (683) away from Quintana Roo.
We can confirm that there has not been any other case reported elsewhere in Mexico. Cancun, the Riviera Maya and the State of Quintana Roo remain free from the “Zika Virus”.

All our hotels in Riviera Maya make every effort to eliminate and control the mosquito; we follow preventative measures set by the WHO and CDC as well as the local governing body. We have a full fumigation program that has been in place and proved successful for many years; this includes daily, weekly and monthly fumigation tasks in public areas of the hotel, guest rooms and facilities. In addition mosquito repellent is ready available throughout all restaurants and bars, and for our guest comfort and wellbeing all guests’ rooms are air conditioned as well as the many of the public areas and facilities within the resorts.

I had one guest cancel the trip - but she is pregnant. It really only negatively affects pregnant women, or those trying to get pregnant. otherwise you may just experience a fever or pink eye, but this virus has been around for a long time. Only recently has it been found to cause birth defects. So pregnant women are urged to not travel to the impacted countries. If you are not pregnant and get the virus, you can have healthy babies again once the virus is out of your system.

I'm worried about it affecting attendance at my Dec wedding as well. I thought I read in an article that if a normal person gets it, they recover in a few days and it's not a big deal. However, for pregnant women, it's a different story. I'm really hoping it's not an issue in December. One of my bridesmaids is talking about having another baby soon, so I might lose her now.

If she wants to conceive soon you may lose her anyways. She'd be due late this year and may not want to travel with a young baby or leave them at home!!!

Pregnancy and destination weddings are a tricky one :(

Ladies - I would really caution about posting things that will cause a panic.. A couple of the brides are being very proactive for you and posting news articles and links for you to look at. I understand it is concerning particularly for anyone pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Be an informed bride! Don't sit back and expect someone else to do the work for you. Find something informative like the links posted here and post it on your wedding website or your wedding Facebook page. Allow your guests to be well informed too!! I'm hearing that as yet the virus has not be found in certain countries in a level high enough to be a concern and the countries where the level is high are countries where healthcare is not readily available. Be aware yes but try not to contribute to panic among your guests.

@@tpenner Your wedding isn't until December. I'm hearing there is an expectation that a vaccine could be available by the end of the year. I wouldn't be concerned at this point but again - be an informed bride and allow your guests to be informed too!! Read whatever you can and stay current with developments. The travel industry is not about to lose a ton of money over this and the countries that depend on the travel dollars will be doing everything they can as well.

@@snswedding2016 and @@deecol Thanks ladies! Let logic and proper information prevail!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
