Turning Maybeoneday's Dream To Reality...

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies,

I have finally decided to write a planning thread as I need to get organised and who better to help than all of you lovely ladies!

Luckily we will be having a small wedding with just the two of us so not a huge amount of planning involved regarding guests so just need to ensure the day is perfect for us. We are eloping to Mexico and will tell our friends and family when we return. Only a few of our close friends are aware of what is going on!

Let's start at the beginning....This is going to take a while so get a cuppa ready....

**HOW WE MET**

For us its the old cliché we met at work! We both worked for a small furnishing back in 1999 - I was a sales assistant in one store and FI was the delivery person to all stores.

We started off as friends just chatting at work when he made deliveries and the on the phone. We both lived quite far apart so only really saw each other a little at work. I heard from one of the lads at work that FI was a bit of a player so when he asked me to go out with him on Valentines Day -14 February 2000 - I turned him down as I had been hurt in the past and did not want to get into another relationship like that. Little did I know that the other lad ( who I was not attracted too) made it all up as he was going to ask me out himself! I was told by one of the girls at work on Valentines Day and the other lad was the player as he already had a girlfriend! He thought that I would say yes if he made himself look good by lying about everything.

So I apologised to FI and asked him out....he turned me down! Luckily as a joke to get back at me for turning him down! So our official Anniversary for dating in 14 February!

**The Proposal**

It was all a whirlwind from there!

When the store I was working in decided to close a few months later, I was asked if I wanted to transfer to a store closer the FI's workplace. I said 'Yes' so decided to move back to the Midlands as I had moved away the previous year with a friend. So the daunting task of finding somewhere to live started.

FI was having a few problems with his parents as they were pushing him to have an arranged marriage (Indian family - long story) so he left home and got a place for himself and asked me to move in! As I was still looking for a place and commuting quite a long way for work and to see him I decided to take the plunge - temporarily to start with as I was still looking for somewhere else.

Any way, we both got offered a 6 month to 1 year job to set up and open a store in one of the major cities in the UK with accommodation provided so decided to do that!

By then his family had gotten to know me and knew we were serious so in September 2000 he proposed in front of them . We'd only been together around 7 months and we were already living together and engaged!

** Life after the Engagement**

We were party animals and were out most evenings. So we decided to reduce it down a little and we saved for a while and decided to move settle down back in the Midlands and look at buying somewhere together. Unfortunately due to lack of work for FI we ate into a large chunk of savings. We decided to have a long engagement and save some more once FI got back into work. We decided to buy a place first so in 2005 offered on a small apartment and moved in after New Year 2006.

**Wedding attempt #1**

Life was going fine so we decided to marry in 2008. Just a small wedding but a nice honeymoon. In March 2008 - a few months before our wedding FI got laid off from work as the market crashed in the UK. It was difficult living on one wage again so we decided to postpone the wedding. We did not re-set a date until FI got another job and was settled.

**Family background**

Background on families - Coming from a strict religious family where women were forced into marriage and had to stay at home to cook, clean and produce babies once you were 18 - I decided I wanted to experience life so packed my bags and left home just after my exams. My family were not happy! I tried to build bridges but after my father passed away a couple of years later I was asked to either come home and leave everything/everyone in my new life or never come back. I was told I was the cause of my father's early passing and should redeem myself by following the families wishes.

It was a difficult decision but I did walk away from my family.

FI on the other hand came from a tight family unit but like me he wanted to experience life by venturing out on his own. They wanted him to marry someone from his religion but knew we were together. His parents were fine to my face but behind our backs were still looking for an Indian bride for him. Cutting a long story short there was a family fued brewing and at the end of it everyone went their separate ways including his parents!

**Wedding attempt #2**

Our next attempt was a destination wedding and just invite close friends and some family to at home Reception.

So we decided on a DW at Excellence Riviera Cancun on Valentines Day 2013 - All booked and paid for. At home reception - booked and paid for.

Out of the blue I had a message from my brother who I had not spoken to for 11 years to call him. I did. My mother had been diagnosed with Cancer and he wanted the family to be together to make amends. I met her a few months later as she was having Chemo and we made amends. I then met the rest of the family on the second visit.

We were told in November 2011 that the chemo had not worked and it would be a matter of a couple of months taking us the January/February - around our wedding date.

With the wedding being when it was i did not want to be abroad when the worst happened so we decided to cancel it. I could not think about it. As it was so close to the wedding date we did not get hardly any money back. In hindsight we should have just moved it and that way only lose a small amount. She passed away in December 2011.

Excellence Riviera Cancun WC was so good and said she would save the date just in case we changed our mind but we decided not to re - book which was a good thing as there was a blizzard mid February which would have grounded our flights...It was not meant to be!

I did say this was a long story....15 years worth! Only 2 years left...

We talked about re booking that year but then FI'S father passed away in December 2013 so we stopped again.

**Last Wedding Attempt #3**

We made our minds up just before Christmas 2014 to do it in 2015. Whether at home or a DW. We wanted the Excellence RC but it had gone out of our price range and no longer available with our local airline so opted for Secrets Capri. Only problem...The deal we could afford was in September 2015 only and neither of us could get time off from work then.

Back to the drawing board!

We than found Royalton Riviera Cancun who do a 'Just the two of us' package. Especially for people who elope! It was fate! Booked in January this year for our DW on 14 October 2015!

**The Dress and everything else**

Due to the cancellation in 2012 we already had the dress and suit.

However, we wanted something new so have purchased these again.

Wow you two have been thru everything and here you are finally marrying the love of your life. Congrats to you both.

Love love love the dress. My

Opinion is that if you know your hair frizzed it's probably safer up! Both hair styles are lovely though!!

Thanks Kim X

I really hate up do's on me as I don't think they suit my face shape - round - but will see what might look okay! If not I am trialling some frizz tamers over this summer do might come up with something that's tames the frizz!

Thanks xx I was pretty nervous after the first few TripAdvisor reviews but then thought what the heck! We're pretty laid back so can't see too much getting to us while we're there!

Help!

I really want some wedding day memorabilia to look back on when we're old and grey. Unfortunately, with it just being the 2 of us we don't have the 'Save the Dates ' , 'Invites' or the lovely bags that a lot of you have designed and produced - which are amazing by the way!

I would love to put things like this in a box to show future kids / grand kids that we did do something a little wacky when we were younger!

I was thinking, maybe just for us, an Itinerary of some sort with a nice design on it. And maybe a couple of bags with our weddings date / initials on it for us to use while we're there. I would also really like some maracas as well which I suppose we could give out if we decide to have a small get together with friends afterwards.

What do you think....Is that as tacky as I've made it sound ? Mm mm not sure. ...

Not tacky at all!! It's your wedding! You can do almost anything you want! There is a US site for maracas but I don't know what the shipping would be for you. We're in holiday this week and I don't have all of my access so I'll have to let the other ladies jump in with ideas. I know there will be things you can do and your coordinator at Royalton might be able o help out as well.

I don't think it's tacky either. Personalized beach bags with your wedding date would be cute -- you can use them and keep them as a souvenir.

Maracas and such - since it's just the two of you I bet you could just sneak into playa del Carmen or Cancun and pick some stuff up for yourself :) The US site (Amols) for maracas has them cheap but shipping to Canada was more than $40 so I assume to the UK would be absurd.

Hmmmm I think if you personalized whatever you use that would be great keepsakes!

You could even get a small guestbook of your liking and have the WC and minister and such sign it. I LOVED that my WC signed mine!

Sorry I hope others can give better ideas than I heheh

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
