Ceremony Dress

I bought my ceremony dress back in April when I was visiting my family for Easter, and received it a few weeks ago. I don't have any pics of it on me because 1) my mom took terrible pictures when I bought it and 2) I have no idea how to do up the corset back by myself.

I've walked around the house holding the back together w/ my hands and I love it. However, it is super hot compared to at the store where they had the AC blasting.  Also, my resort has stairs leading to the ceremony area and with this dress being a mermaid I'm going to have to practice walking down stairs w/ constricted legs.

I bought the dress out of state so they just mailed it to me. It's from a chain that has a location in my city, so can I take it there for alterations? I thought (based on tv) that it was supposed to stay at the store until the alterations so I feel like I don't know what to do with it now that it's in my house. How early before the wedding should you start the alterations process?

@TNT2015

Aw your engagement story is so cute. I love that it was meaningful to your lives together and that the ring and meaning too. My FI and I also love to do Mud runs. We’ve done Spartan twice, mud hero, and Tough Mudder. We are doing Tough Mudder again this year (I’m not sure why I’m doing it, it scares me to death haha).

Your save the dates and Invitations are gorgeous! I also used Cards and Pockets to build mine! Glad that yours are cheap to mail. I added a silver starfish charm to all of mine and I’m scared to bring mine to the post office next week :S

Your bridesmaids dresses are cute though! I think they will look really good in navy! I am also doing long dresses and I basically told my bridesmaids that they can wear any black wedge they want. The joy of long dresses!

OMG! Your dress is insanely gorgeous! I tried on a dress similar but I felt too constricted in the leg area. I wanted to be confortable dancing. I told the dress consultant that in that dress I would only be dancing the robot all night hahaha. But I think the dress you picked is so gorgeous and elegant. It will look amazing on the beach! As for alterations, I got mine in a store closing so the consultant (who is also a dress designer and seamstress) is doing the alterations right away. It makes me nervous because I’m still 7 months away from my wedding. I’ve heard the normal is to wait 3 months prior to your wedding to get the alterations done.

Can’t wait to read more!

@yycbride2016 You did the Tough Mudder?! How was that? That's one of the few that I haven't gotten the courage to do because of the electric obstacle. Next year we're going to try to do all three lengths of Spartan Race.

Haha the leg constriction is the exact reason why I'm also doing a simple reception dress. I don't think I could stand being in the dress all night but I feel super elegant in it. I tried a dress on like yours, but it made me look shorter. Even in my dress I feel a bit short, so now I'm contemplating wearing wedges instead of going barefoot.

@yycbride2016  Is it in Red Deer again this year?

@TNT2015  Your dress is absolutely gorgeous!  Can't wait to see you wearing it.

I think it really depends on the store if they store your dress for you or not -- I believe they would have to have proper insurance. I know here in my city David's Bridal would not hold your dress for you, so it hung in my bedroom. Not even joking LOL I was too scared to leave it in the basement (bugs) or in the kid's rooms (well you know why lol) but my husband wasn't even tempted. If you have a spare room maybe hang it in there - out of site, out of mind.

You can bring your dress for alterations wherever you want too.  If you prefer the bridal store you purchased it from great, if someone has a recommendation of a seamstress for half the cost, even better!!  I tend to find that bridal stores up the cost.  I went to a seamstress in my neighborhood more for access - as I live in a large city the bridal store was about a 30 min drive.

Most people do alterations 2-3 months out.  I did three months out, but she had more than the basics to do. I had a hem, bustle, and she took my dress out and had to replicate the bead work.  Most people don't recommend doing it much earlier than that because your body shape may change and you would have to get the work done twice potentially.  Also ask the shop where you plan to have the work done - if they are more busy you may have to go in sooner, etc.   With saying that, bridal stores are super busy -- David's Bridal in Calgary books easily 6 months in advance if not more.

Hope that helps

@TNT2015 yup we did tough mudder last September and signed up right after to do it again this year. Call me crazy! Haha. I was almost in tears before going through electro-shock therapy. I was so terrified. My fiancé and his brother went through it twice to encourage me to do it. It's not actually as bad as you think it will be. The whole race is more mental in my opinion. Good luck with the 3 Spartans. I think Spartans are more physical than tough mudder (probably because of the burpees).

That's a good idea to have 2 dresses. I couldn't fit that in the budget or else I may have done the same thing. Will you do a trash the dress in one then? It's funny you said you looked short in one similar to mine. I'm only 5'1 and I felt my dress made me look taller haha.

@calgarybride2015 tough mudder was in Drumheller last year and I believe it is again. The race in Red Deer is Mud Hero. That one was so much fun!! You literally end up covered in mud head to toe. My Uncle is and RCMP in Red Deer and he was supervising the race so I was trying to give him a muddy hug!

@yycbride2016 I'm not sure about a trash the dress, though I don't think we're going to do one because I already had to convince my FI that we need wedding day pics. My reception dress is being made by a replica shop so its only costing $175. I should have it this month sometime and I'll be sure to post about it! I figured I'd spend close to that on a bustle anyways.

Spartan races are definitely more physical, but I prefer the obstacle portions to the running.

@calgarybride2015 I'm thinking I need to take the dress out the box then :) I tried in on, then redid all the packaging and put it back in the box. We share a closet, but it might fit in the coat closet. Thanks for the info about alterations! Assuming I don't lose any weight, it will just need a hem but hopefully it'll have to be taken in too  :D

Beautiful dress :). I think you could take it to the store where you bought it, even if in a different city, or you could try and research other alterations places. There's nothing wrong with shopping around for alterations, and it's a good thing that you have the dress so people can give you a more accurate quote of how much it would cost :)

@TNT2015 Thats a great deal! Can't pass up a deal that good. I had contemplated going that route too but I was too nervous. Can't wait to see what yours looks like! Thats funny though about convincing your FI to have photos taken.

Agreed! You'd probably like Tough Mudder then. The obstacles are really cool and challenging. Its a race that seriously is all about team work though. You aren't timed so they call it a "challenge". The goal is simply to complete the race. And it doesn't matter if you know anyone doing the race at the same time as you because every single person helps everyone. Its a really cool atmosphere.

Decorations

I put together an inspiration picture of what I have in mind so far for the reception. Our colors are navy, white, and yellow but I'm also adding in some gold, and chalkboards so that it doesn't look too nautical. I've had a lot of difficulty because when the FI finally gets interested in something he is very picky. I've snuck the gold in just because I thought it was pretty and he agreed to the cake topper so...

So far I've bought:

Reception Tables - Navy runners & chair sashes

Sweetheart Table - Navy tablecloth and gold runner

Cake or Guestbook Table - Gold Overlay

Cake Topper

Looks lovely! Have you purchased your cake topper yet? If not, I have the perfect person on Etsy I got mine from.

They had all sorts of sayings and all sorts of colors in sparkle or no sparkle.  What you showed above would be in her store. Her store is called Chicago Factory (think it might be one word).  If you are interested let me know.
