As I'm a bit of a music geek, I'd be more comfortable hearing a sample of the groups music before we hire them.
I think we're looking for a small group that can do salsa, merengue, and other local styles (just not mariachi!).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

But I wanted to recommend the band we used for our wedding!

I donâ€t think they have a name... Sol Tomargo also used them for her wedding, and another vendor on here, PlayaWeddings.
Jill Kirkland and Victor Espinoza are the husband/wife team that run the band, then there are about two/three others who play in the band as well.

They were great! They played while people were being seated, for when I walked down the aisle, during our ceremony and during our cocktail hour, and honestly -- I think they're the only reason people stayed for our cocktail hour! :-)
(our resort's service during our cocktail hair was terrible...but Victor and Jill's music kept people happy:-))

And they were very reasonably priced!
For two sets (45 mins per set), it was about $550 (can't remember exactly...sorry!)

Best way to reach them is by e-mail:

mexijill@hotmail.com
vicmusic_77710@yahoo.com

(try e-mail both addresses...Jill is American, so will likely be the one to respond...Victor is her husband and speaks Spanish and a little English...)

Good luck -- and if you need any more info on the band, just ask:-)

Hey there!

Sorry for the late reply smile105.gif

The band was great...btu they don't play salsa, which is I think what you're looking for...?

(actually, *maybe* they play salsa...we didn't ask for that type of music...but maybe they do?)

Maybe try emailing those email addresses I posted before and ask...of course, those email addresses were from a LONG time ago, so hopefully they still work!:-)

Good luck!

I just had the best band ever for my wedding 2 wks ago!  Banda Balance. Here's the cut and paste from the Dreams Cancun thread where I just posted about them:

They were SOOO FANTASTIC!!!!  I was worried no one would dance since they play a lot of salsa and not everyone is into that (I am though..hehehe).  We had a DJ the first 2 hrs and then 3hrs of the band.  Both were sooo great! The DJ had everyone on the dancefloor the entire time!  Then the band came on and played Black Eyed peas, Beyonce, Salsa, they took requests from the crowd, had us doing conga lines and other dances, no one was sitting down at ALL until they stopped playing at 1am. They sound so good, they could be famous rockstars, I'm so serious, you guys have to check them out, it really made the party something to talk about. The main singer also MC'd the wedding (toss bouquet time, cake cutting time, etc) http://www.balancelabanda.com/

We just used La Mata for our wedding and they were really fun for the wedding! We had the band and a DJ, because we figured the band is best at rock and rock/dance music, while the DJ can play Rihanna, Gaga and other dance songs. The band also has a big Spanish playlist if you are looking for that.

I will just say they are really really pleasant to work with, were very responsive with communication in advance and performed wonderfully. People were singing along to their music so enthusiastically - they have a great accent for the American songs and their rock style is great for songs like "Don't Stop Believing," "Twist and Shout," "Take on Me," etc.

It was great.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
