Does Having A Legal Ceremony Take Away From The Dw?

Recommended Posts

Congrats on the first step!! I agree, I dont think it takes away from what us brides consider our "dream" wedding day. Its really just to make it official legally and that is all. my fiance and I are going to be doing our JP wedding the day before we fly out because we want both our partents to be there to witness it. We might go out for dinner (depending if we are fully packed to fly out the next day or not) but thats all we will do. It wont be anything fancy. We will probably just go to the court house, say our I do's and sign the papers.

My sister actually did her legal ceremony 6 months prior to her DW. I don't think it took away from the day at all. Her passport was expiring and she didnt want to renew twice so she got married, changed her name and got a new passport 6 months prior to Mexio. She also wanted me to be a witness and I was going away for 4 months so she made the JP wedding really early. Her actual day in Mexico really felt like her wedding day and most of us forgot she was already married. It wasn't until my grandma said... is this legal? They didn't sign any papers. hahaha. It was really cute.

You can't do court house weddings in Calgary anymore. There is a list of available people on Service Alberta. I can recommend mine if you want when the time comes. We just went to her house. She was $100 but my coworker just used her and I think it was $120. I know 4-5 people who have used her.

@@calgarybride2015 darn it! I was really hoping the legal side of things would be super simple haha (show up say I do, go home) haha. Thanks for the advice! I'm sure you'll be hearing from me when the time gets closer. Lots of figuring out to do for that it sounds like

So cute!  I am glad you wrote about this since so many of us have gone and will go through the same thing.

We legally got married the week before our destination wedding too.  I kept trying to make it work to get legally married at the wedding, but Mexico has requirements that just didn't end up workign with our plan.  My fiance (well now husband) had suggested we go to Santa Barbara (they have a beautiful Mission style courthouse) to get married and spend the weekend there.  It ended up being perfect for us.  We hired a professional photographer and I just got all the pictures back and tear up every time I look at them.  I am so happy we did it this way!

Although we are going to celebrate our DW date as our wedding anniversary, the week before will always be very special to us.

Curious.. Does anyone know if any legal documents need to be shown to the resort(s) to prove you are legally married prior to the symbolic ceremony? I ask this because I have read if you go to a resort in MX for a honeymoon they require your marriage Lic. at check in. I'm just wondering if this would also be the same for a symbolic wedding. We plan to do our legal marriage in the states the weekend before we head out. Would that be cutting it to close since we won't receive the actual certificate until about 30 days after ?

@@racht33 good question, I think it depends on your resort.  Our resort didn't require anything to show we were already married, I would just ask, but I doubt they would require that.

Ditto. Generally if you do the symbolic there it includes the honeymoon items. Maybe if you just booked the resort for your honeymoon they may want proof because they give you tonnes of upgrades for free.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
