Yycbride2016 Grand Sirenis Planning Thread February 2016

@ great minds think alike ;) and completely agree with you on the importance of a good photographer

@@yycbride2016 you're very welcome :) I never even explored how much it would be to bring a photographer down with us but I heard some can be quite reasonable. Definitely look into both options because the downward spiralling of our loonie is driving me nuts! I have a budget spreadsheet and it irks me so much to see how much our costs have increased because of the exchange rate! Here's hoping it goes up real soon....like today lol

Ah I just read stuff about photographers travelling with you for weddings and having all of their equipment seized. I think there would be regulations on getting work permits and what not, which feels like a complete hassle to me. I just found a cute couple that are canadian doing photography around this area and i've reached out to them for a quote. Jasmin and Matt: http://www.jasminandmatt.com

Hey!

That price for Lancelotti is unreal. I'm pretty sure I saw his prices and it wasn't that good so @ you did fantastic girl!!! @@tygrrlily used him so maybe take a look for her planning thread and you can see some more of his work :)

@@Wafflesmom. Ya that is a large jump!! I agree. Seems a bit unfair. All I can assume is that they brought their prices in line with what else is out there. When I did my research they were a lot cheaper than everyone else I researched.

If you can find a Canadian photog living in Mexico who would allow you to pay in CDN or peso, it may not be bad. Definately ask. Unless you can find that you won't beat the exchange rate disaster :(

I'm going to Vegas in 3 weeks and it kills me.

Here is her thread, her review is in her bookmark where I am sure most of the professional photos are.

Is their FB page!  The girl in the 'pin up' type shots is Perla, she is due in October so I assume would be back to shooting in Feb!!  Her husband also works(ed) for Adventure Photos as well. His name is Hazel. If you went this route, I have a lot of their work I can send to show you more than you may find on their FB page.

@@yycbride2016 I'm bringing a photographer from home, so it's definitely an option. But hopefully you can find a great photographer based in Mexico at the right price (especially if they take CAD)!

What I understand from reading up on the rules and speaking with my photographer (she does a few destination weddings a year), is that they can't bring their entire photography kit into the country like they would have at a local wedding. As long as they bring 1 camera and maybe 1 extra lens then they do not require a work permit and are not considered a "professional photographer" working in the country. This will limit their ability to take pictures exactly the way they would like to (where they might want to change lenses throughout the day as the lighting and locations change), but I don't think it's significant difference in the quality of the pictures.

Good luck with your search!

Thank you! I am going to check out her stuff and reach out to her this weekend to get some quotes. I'm starting to get quotes back from all these different people i've reached out to. The best I have found is $1600. Fingers crossed i'll get a great deal!

@@krystalball

That's great info! Thank you so much! My preference is to just pay a photographer in Mexico intead of paying to bring one from Canada. But if I can save money i'll do what ever I can!

Update:

Photography:

I'm strongly leaning towards Lancelotti Photography right now. I've emailed over 10 different photographers and sat down and looked at portfolios with my FI. We narrowed it down to Lancelotti and a Canadian couple called Jasmin & Matt. Both photographers offer $1600 for a full day of coverage. So once I factor in the Vendor fee and day passes It will hopefully be just under $2000USD. I really don't want to go over that since the original budget was $1500 for photography.

Decorations:

I'm at it again with that darn DIY bug haha. my first project is candle jars! Now that I know how to tie fish net like rope I'm going to decorate any empty glass jars I get over time. These will be used for our AHR so I don't have to worry about the weight of the glass jars. Plus I thought they would be cute to put candles in on the deck in the summer! This jar is an empty peanut butter jar! I feel so crafty haha.

Next I worked on my bridesmaids & groomsmens gifts. The jewelery I got for the girls didn't come in a box because it was an inventory clearance and I think they were closing down. I was going to get these cute nautical jewelry boxes from Icing but for $14 each I didn't think it was worth it considering how much I've already spent. I found these blank boxes at the dollarama and found some burlap and ribbon to decorate them! I also did this for the groomsmen's ties and pocket squares. This is how they turned out!

Then I worked on my escort cards and placement cards. I'm super happy with how these turned out! The escort cards are message in a bottle themed and I found these perfect little glass jars at the dollarama and I bought some sea colored stones (or concrete as it said on the tube). I added some clear crystals and a seashell and poped in the note that has each persons name and table number. I might have to make a few more before the wedding happens so I made sure to buy a bunch of spare ones just in case.

As for the placement cards I found these cards at the dollarama (found lots of things there this weekend haha), 40 for $1! So this is just a tester card. I'm going to see if I can run it through the printer to make the calligraphy nicer since I'm not that great at it. But I will use my starfish stamp on each one.

Rant:

Ok so a friend of mine from University is getting married this Septemer and I think because we invited them to our wedding they felt obliged to last minute invite us. Which is totally fine and I'm actually really excited to see my friend get married. I don't know his fiance very well but she seems like such a quite sweet girl.... Apparently I was wrong.

A friend told me over the weekend that this guy's fiance had tweeted on twitter about my save the dates. I went on the hunt for it and when I found it I was so appauled and shocked. I wanted to instantly un-invite her to our wedding.

twitter guest

I couldnt believe someone would be so rude. I spelt her name wrong but c'mon I barely know her and you would think her being a bride too should know how much work it is to label 100 envelopes and not make a mistake. SERIOUSLY?!?!? Now I'm wondering if I spelt her name right on the actual wedding invitation. I'm keepping my eye out for another rude remark...

That's such a great deal for a whole day of photography! I hope it all works out in the end :)

As for the diy projects, wow, you are truly amazing! I can't believe you've turned pb jars into beautiful candle jars. They'll fit so well with your theme.

And that woman is a real piece of work. It's not like it was misspelled to the point you got her name wrong. Ooh, an extra e, regardless it still reads like her name! That is so rude to post it on social media, and to talk about price? Wow! Get off your high horse lady, as if she's never made a mistake in her life. And a simple no thank you rsvp you've sufficed! I would keep writing her name like that from now on lol. But I'm a biatch that way muahaha

I think everything looks fantastic :) love the little boxes and the message in a bottle escort cards are fantastic. Love them! Honestly your calligraphy is perfect for 'Robert' and I think either way (your hand writing or the computer) they are good :)

Secondly, wow!!! She's a treat. Even if I thought it and said it to my fiancé I would never ever post something like that on social media. I mean really? Wow!!! And having grown up having my name spelt wrong 15 million times (it's KimberlEy) I've just accepted it and honestly barely notice it anymore. My symbolic wedding certificate from the GS has my name spelt wrong. Whatever. She needs to get over herself.

Edit - my husband says if they come to Mexico at the reception you should say 'thank you to Dave and what's your name again? For coming' hahahah

decor - wow! PB jars? well done! they look great and definitely something you can use around the house or in the back yard after :)

gifts/escort cards/placement cards - the gifts look great all wrapped up. how amazing is dollarama, right? my parents are moving in a month and when they showed us the house one of my first comments was "and you have my favourite dollarama down the street!" ps. huge steal on your cards. i think they look great how you wrote the name; i wouldn't change a thing. i always love the sentimental touch of our own hand writing.

rant - omg. so...are you still going to their wedding? call me spiteful but i would have a hard time going after seeing that ridiculous post. i mean, it's only an 'e'; relax Mariann!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
