I agree - I love both dresses but the first is the dressier "wedding" style, the second is definitely the fun, flirty reception style.

I knew that I would get some support here given all the "dress issues" so many of us brides seem to face! Your comments are interesting though in how you are describing the dresses... I originally was thinking just a simple sundress and not even a wedding dress. So keeping that in mind, the second one is probably more along those lines (fun, flirty, etc) and may be why I'm still torn. I'm also feeling like the first one makes me look (gasp) matronly. Although I'm no spring chicken, I don't feel my age (and I'm told I don't look it), plus this is a first marriage for both of us so I don't want to feel or look like an old lady LOL. It didn't really help when I tried on the dress for my parents and sister last weekend and the response was "ummmm.... It's nice...."

Oh no!!! Why on earth would you think it makes you look matronly?????? It doesn't!! And you are so still a spring chicken!!!! I think it's a beautiful simple short wedding dress and will look beautiful in your wedding photos!! And if it makes you feel good wearing it, then do it!! now I do have a question. Why aren't you thinking of something long for your wedding, and the short dress for your reception? Just curious, that's all.....

 

Yeah - we never get the reaction from our "entourage" that we think we should get. When I first started looking for something to wear, my friend said "why don't you get a nice evening gown". Uh yeah right. We're going to be on a rooftop terrace in Mexico. Why on earth would I look for an evening gown??? They aren't even going to be in Mexico anyway. I told her I wanted to make Doug's jaw drop and she said "well you could get a sexy evening gown". Go figure.....

@@vancouverpetunia I think you look beautiful in your first dress. I love the look of the second dress as well so I second everyone in maybe getting both, one for the ceremony and the other for your reception?

 

And you do not look matronly! Your family's reaction may have been that way since most ppl probably assumed you'd be wearing a traditional wedding gown. The shock of seeing a short dress may have prompted the reaction because I think your dress looks more than "nice"

@@acw271011 I don't know why I'm feeling that way. I just wasn't feeling right about the dress and that was the word that popped into my head one day as I mulled it over. You are sweet Being a first time bride in your 40s feels old sometimes!

 

As for long vs short - good question. I don't know. I don't think I've ever had a "princess wedding" vision in my head. I'm sure I wanted a long dress at one point, but as soon as we started planning, even when we were thinking of doing something local, I wanted short. And then when we decided on a DW, short made even more sense to me, with the heat, the sand, etc. I don't really think I look at great in long dresses and I think my calves are awesome, so I like showing them off LOL That's the best answer I've got. 

 

In the end, I guess we have to be happy with our own choices and damn everyone one haha. I'll sit on it a while longer and see how I feel in a month or two.

 

@@Wafflesmom They knew I wasn't going for a long traditional gown, although they had seen photos of the "other" dress so may have been expecting something more like that. They had also seen photos of me in my dress, so it wasn't a huge surprise. I was talking to my mom a few days ago and I told her that I was having second thoughts and then asked her what she thought (thinking my confession would open the door to any criticism she might have). She said she thought it fit me well and that the shape was great, but she wasn't expecting so much beading (neither was I!). I did also try it on in poor lighting and without any shoes, accessories or anything. She said that all done up and on the beach in the sun, it could be beautiful. So I guess she likes it, but probably isn't what she would have picked for me. But it's also not what I would have picked for me haha

Any chance you might be daring and have some fun and try on a long dress maybe a little understated and see how you feel in it? There are so many styles and options it might be fun to try something and see how it goes. .....

@@acw271011 I did try on a couple of long dresses as well as tea length dresses. I also made sure to hit up a few bridal stores to browse all styles as I didn't want to figure out too late that I wanted something more traditional. So I think I'm set on a short dress But I agree it's worth trying on many different styles as you never know what's going to "click". Seems often to be what is least expected!

@@vancouverpetunia The short dress looks gorgeous on you! And if that's what makes YOU happy, that's all that's important!! It was curiosity that made me ask if you knew right out of the gate that you wanted short, or did you try both to see what grabbed you. I still also think you should do both dresses if your budget allows. Have the lace dress for your ceremony then switch to the party dress afterwards! They're both beautiful!

That's it. I'm getting the other dress. Last night, I showed 3 friends (who are not close enough to be invited to the wedding) a photo of me in the dress I purchased. They said nice things about it. Then I showed them the photo of the dress I originally wanted and can't stop thinking about. They ooohh'd and aawh'd. Totally different reactions. Even the waitress got in on the action and responded similarly. I don't have to order it until late fall to get it in time (custom made in HK), so hopefully will lose a bit of weight before then. I'm doing it!

I was just reading your planning thread and you cracked me up with your "befriending the gardener"   I brought down some gardening sheers to be able to put together my flowers etc etc and I was seriously tempted to snip some greenery afterhours to add to the volume of my flowers.  lol  I obviously didn't, but I was really tempted.

 

That's insane about the hotel charging you soooo much.  I was in the same boat as you.  My colours were gold and coral and Katy didn't have any gold vases for me to rent which is why I got my dad to get them for me.

 

A few things I learned from my wedding ...it's not easy finding nice vases in Playa del Carmen.  Not that we needed any but we kept an eye open because the ones that my dad bought were slightly small and I thought that if I found a size bigger I might pick up a few and add it to our décor.  We looked at Walmart, Chedraui, Sam's club, Mega, playa, and definitely wasn't easy.  They need a Michael's down there becfause that would solve our problems. 

Even talking to Katy, she mentioned it was really hard to find vases down there. 

 

So if you do consider bringing some down it might be the easiest solution for you.  Just because you bring them down with you doesn't mean you have to take them home with you.  You could always see if Katy wants them. 

 

I would probably do the lemon thing yourself and not let them charge you a dime- I'm sure if you recruit a few people it would be fine. 

 

I found a really nice flower store in playa del Carmen and their prices were very reasonable.  They also sell the greenery that you are looking for as well and for a reasonable price.  I have their business card somewhere...i'll post it when I come across it. 

 

Anyway, those were my little lessons learned regarding vases and flowers in Playa del Carmen.
