Cost To Steam A Wedding Dress?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I haven't looked around my city to see what they charge for a steam, but I was a bit taken back when my resort told me it would cost me about $160 US, which is probably close to $200 Canadian for this service.

This sounds unreasonable to me, but maybe I am wrong?  It's a steaming not a dry clean.

My alterations place will do a 'light steam' when my dress is done. Not exactly sure what that means but it's probably not smart to steam it in Canada (instead of Mexico) as it may be wrinkled by the time it gets off the plane and the shuttle to the resort.

Anyone have success using an iron or the showers in Mexico to work them out or should I just suck up I may have to pay this fee?

Thanks!

I wouldn't bother at all. My dress was very similar to yours and I took it to Jamaica. Hubs and I were in the same room so I couldn't even open the dress bag to air it out until the morning of but there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I hung it in the bathroom when I showered in the morning and it worked great. It was chiffon as well and there was hardly a wrinkle. Davids steamed it with the alterations and I picked it up a week before we left, it was in the bag the entire time plus it got put into an overhead bin, slung over my arm through the airport and a whole bunch of other stuff. But day of the wedding it was fine. Even the train. And with the humidity in the air, I'm sure that helped too. I bought a portable steamer at Walmart in the US for about 20 bucks and took that with me just in case for both his shirt and my dress and it never even made it out of the box. If your alterations place will do a light steam, that should be enough. If you want to be absolutely certain, if you can hang it somewhere until you leave, out of the bag, then pack it and then open it up somewhere when you arrive in Mexico, and let it hang, then maybe the day before in a steamy bathroom, I would lay dollars to donuts you won't have anything to worry about. Save the $200.

Thank you! At first I was hoping to just use the humidity and a hot shower and hearing it worked for you helps put my mind at ease.

I'm fairly laid back about it all but with a month to go now panic is setting in and it sucks!!

I have some single lady friends who probably wouldn't mind my dress hanging open in their room either.

Thanks again!!!

I carried my sister's dress to Mexico for her wedding last year (yes, I am a very nice sister!) and was SHOCKED it had no wrinkles after the trip! Carrying it slung over my arm, I fully expected bunchy wrinkles in the sides, but not really. The couple tiny ones fell right out after hanging it up. $160 seems extremely steep to me! I think past brides at my resort didn't even get charged for it, or it was very minimal.

That seems a little excessive just for a steaming. My resort offered to do it for free. I definitely think you will be okay if you have some time to hang the dress and a hot steamy shower should do the trick for your fabric. As a back up, the 20$ steamer idea is pretty neat!

I hung mine in my MOH's bathroom for 4 days before the wedding and all the wrinkles came out. So happy I did that and didn't spend the money on steaming :) You'll be fine.

How excited are you getting? It's coming close!

I'm actually more stressed now than before haha over little details now.

And timeline from ceremony to reception start time. Feel guilty people have down time but also need enough time for pics.

This need to NOT steam makes me happy!

I am starting to stress out more too and I have three months to go! I wouldn't worry too much about the dress. I'm sure hanging and shower will be plenty, I'll prob bring a mini steamer but yeah my resorts prices are probably outrageous!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
