Byo Photographer

Recommended Posts

Depends on the deal you're able to work out with that photographer / videographer. You'll have to discuss those terms.  Whether you pay for their flight and room and get a discounted package or they pay for their own travel expenses for the opportunity to shoot at a destination wedding. But most will expect you to pay at least a port of their travel costs.

It is also important to check with the property if you are having the ceremony at a location where the package may include the services of a local photographer.  They often have pre-arranged agreements with local vendors and there could be a fee for not using the one they have contracted with.

In addition, there may be a fee for using an outside vendor - and it may vary depending on whether they are also on the guest list or not (staying at the property vs elsewhere)

At my resort if they stayed more than 3 nights there was no vendor fee.

I've inquired with a few people in my town and got 3 different answers. Some want their trip paid and work is free. Some want their trip and a spouse paid and work is free. Some want a package paid and they pay their own way. Everyone is different, so you'd have to ask around :)

Just a word of caution to think about... Even if you aren't exchanging cash (providing room and "board" at an all inclusive for your photographer to shoot your wedding) this is still a transaction in hiring someone to work for you. If your byo photographer is working in Mexico, they are theoretically required to apply for a temporary work permit. Obviously most do not- and never get caught...BUT... I for one would not want to be caught doing something illegal in Mexico (and this qualifies) or be responsible for having a byo photographer detained at the Mexican border because of an arrangement I organized. Not sure how hard it is to get the proper paperwork, but I would add this to your costs as well just to be safe.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
