I want to do a sand ceremony for our wedding, but I don't want to use craft sand.  Rather, my plan is to have each of us scoop sand from where we are standing and pour that in to the jar.

I kind of thought it would be cool to have a smaller scoop and ask all of our friends and family who are attending to scoop a little sand from where they are at when we said our vows and say something about how it means a lot to us to have them there, as they have influenced us as individuals and as a couple and are very much a part of the day.

While I really like the sentiment of that, I don't know how practical it is and how we'd do it logistically with 40 guests.

Should I scrap involving the guests, or leave it?  If I leave it...how do we do it smoothly?

There was a bride that did this and it sounded perfect. I can't remember the specific thread but if I find it I will come back and attach the link.

What they did was have guests add their sand as they arrived to the ceremony prior to you being at the altar... There was a sign explaining what to do, and then the officiant made reference to the sand added by loved ones that worked as the foundation to your sand to strengthen your marriage.

I plan on doing something similar.

Keep in mind, that although many people do it/ it's actually illegal to bring beach sand back across the border because it could harbour insects that could damage domestic agriculture. So make sure it's clean or they may take it at customs

How about if you and your husband begin the process during the ceremony and have guests contribute during the reception?

Leave a small zip-lock bag with note card  on each seat at the wedding with instructions to collect a small amount of sand while there.  Then, during the reception, those who choose to participate can make their contributions.  It could be a really unique "guest book" - they could place their note cards into an established book located at the sand vessel location.

    Just a thought.....

Many do!! It's just not necessarily legal! Lol. I think if it's in a frame or bottle and obviously a wedding momento/ and there aren't weeds and odd stuff in it- they won't know the difference: lol. Just say michaels when they ask you where you got the sand!

We got engaged on a beach in Connecticut, and will be married on a beach in Bermuda. We went to the beach in Connecticut and scooped up some sand, and we recently took a trip to Bermuda to check out venues and we took some sand from their too. We didn't want to use the sand you buy at a store, it seems more special to have taken it from sentimental places.

We are also having a sand ceremony. I wanted to have the guests participate as well but I think it will get a little time consuming and unorganized with 40 guests. We decided to just have our parents, grandparents and wedding party add sand from the beach first, then we are going to add our colored sand on the top. That way we can say something about how they have formed the foundation, blah blah. :)
