Are You Changing Your Last Name, Hyphenating, Or Keeping Your Name

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I was just wondering what everyone was planning on doing with their name after the wedding?  Are you keeping your last name, taking your husband/wife's last name, or hyphenating your last name?  And why?

Personally I'm stuck between taking his last name and hyphenating.  I love my fiancee with all my heart (I wouldn't have agreed to marry him if I didn't lol) but I there's a part of me that wants to hyphenate my last name.  I'm a fiercely, strong, and independant woman and although I'm not strongly attached to my culture it is still a part of my identity that I want to hold on to which is why I want to hyphenate.  On the other hand, I really do love my fiancee and I feel like tradition dictates that I should take his last name.  He's happy with whatever I choose which doesn't make it any easier lol.

I am going to be taking my husbands last name. I also feel like it would be a little weird to not have my maiden name anymore so instead of hyphenating, I'm going to make my maiden name another middle name. That's great that he's letting you go with your heart :)

My fiance feels very strongly about me taking his last name. I'm not opposed per say, but I really really like my name as it is right now. It alliterates :). I think I'm just going to leave it for a while, and if he pushes me, I'll maybe change it down the road haha

Our names would also sound awful hyphenated, and it also sounds weird putting it in as a middle name, but that's probably what I'll end up doing. I don't have a middle name now, so that could work

I am entering my second marriage, with the world's most laid back and easy going man. I have 2 young kids from a previous marriage and thus kept my name after divorcing because I wanted to have the same name as my children (I grew up in a broken home wherer my step father (his name) my mother (her maiden name) and I (my real dad's name) grew up with different last names- I HATED it.

That being said, mr laid back is saying he's ok with me hyphenating my ex's name with his last name... So I keep the connect with my kids, but honor my new marriage. I doubt I will use the hyphen in business or legal papers, but will probably do so in daily life.

I'm still trying to decide.

This is my second marriage also. My legal name is my maiden (but many work people don't know this). My family is very connected so using my maiden name has a lot of advantages and it works in my favor so I never did completely let it go.

However I always used my married name at work and everyone knows me by this name although some are aware of my maiden because I would sometimes hyphenate it.

So in all actuality, I have 3 aliases. My maiden, my 1st married name, and a hyphenated version of the two.

Soon I will have a fourth with this new last name.

Boy oh Boy! This thread just helped me realize I have way too much craziness going on... I need to clean this up and decide on 1 (or maybe 2). LOL

I'm probably, maybe going to hyphenate my maiden and new last name . Job folks will adjust.

I am not changing my last name at all... I'm Laotian and it is very important to me to have that as my cultural identity

My fiancé also feels very strongly about me taking his last name. I was opposed to it for a while, as I felt that my name is a big part of me. He and I also don't like hyphenating, as it would look very odd, and a mouthful! In the end I decided I will change my name, as it is the one thing he has ever asked/wanted me to do, and it means so much to him. He didn't push the subject at all, so it was my decision to change my name!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
