Wedding Dress Shopping By Yourself?

Recommended Posts

Hi Girls,

I am kind of stalling on looking at wedding dresses for a couple of reasons.

1) my fiancé and I just moved to a new province and have no one to go with me wedding dress shopping. My family and friends are no where near me and to go myself it just don't feel right. I feel like a lost dog in a wedding dress store with not much help or assistance with what would look good on me. The sales ladies I feel will say everything looks good because they want to try to sell. A couple of girls from work offered to go with me but I don't know them that well and it just wouldn't be the same. My fiancé wants me to take someone with me because he thinks it will be sad for me to go myself. He feels really bad about it. I am sure he would go with me but I don't want him to see my dress.

2) there is a particular style of dress I am wanting in my mind - sweetheart neckline and lace. But I feel all the lace dresses are pretty slim fitting and I feel like that wouldn't suit well with my body type. I need to keep an open mind but don't want to be left disappointed either.

Any body running into these issues? or have gone wedding dress shopping by yourselves? I would feel better knowing there are people out there that have gone by yourself?

I went dress shopping by myself and loved it! I even befriended another randome bride who just happened to be shopping by herself at the same time, lol! I'm pretty indecisive so I tried on a ton of dresses and narrowed it down to a few different styles then went back with a friend later on to pick "the one". Could you narrow it down on your own then send photos to your friends to ask their opinions? I didn't mind shopping alone, but I would imagine it's not for everyone. Could you maybe make a trip home for a weekend and go dress shopping with all your friends and fam back home?

I kind of live an 8 hour flight away. It's kind of a long trip just to have someone with me dress shopping. I may end up going myself and if I am allowed then I will take pictures and send them to family/friends to get opinions. I find some wedding dress shops won't even allow you to take pictures which is kind of stupid.

If there's one thing I've learned through this whole process, its to not worry about what is traditional or expected, do what you want. I find people making a big deal out of things that I don't feel are important at all. If you're ok with shopping by yourself, then go for it! Find a shop with friendly, helpful staff, and I'm sure you'll be just fine. But if it's really important to you to have someone there with you, then I'm sure you'll find a way to make that happen. You just might have to get a little creative... Skype? :)

I was lucky to have people to shop with, but I did find in the stores the sales people were actually pretty honest and helpful. Some of them even were like no way to some of the dresses before I said it :). Also as Lhills mentioned above, if there's another bride in the store, they'd probably be happy to give their opinion!

Maybe you can go and try some on, and record the names of the ones you are considering so you can send the styles at least to your friends/family later. I wish all stores allowed pics too. I found dresses that looked great in person looked awful in pics, and sometimes even vice versa! I will admit to sneaking some pics at one store, but I ended up buying the dress afterwards! I just needed to see how it photographed

Good luck!

Thanks girls,

I think I will just go myself. It's not a big deal but I think my problem is everyone else is making a big deal out of it. They are like "omg you're not going yourself?" I didn't think it was a big deal before but when people start saying it like that then I wonder "geeze is it a big deal." anyway I will go myself and just send pics.

There is actually a dress I happened to see online and I would like to find a place that sells it to try it on. Not sure if it would fit my body type at all but I just love it so much. I am going to hunt around and see if anyone carries it.

The dress I love is Da Vinci style 50096 in case anyone wants to have a look.

Here is the dress attached also if anyone wants to have a look. let me know what you think? I am not slim and tall by no means.

can't seem to attach it all of a sudden :(

@@kcole123 - Pretty! Definitely try it on!! I'm drawn to mermaid/trumpet/fit and flare styles too, and I was really afraid before I tried them on that they wouldn't look good because I'm NOT tall and skinny. But, they actually look great on me! I think it's because I do have some curves and the dress shape is was really flattering (I have a defined waist and fairly large hips). I thought that type of dress would overly emphasize my hips, but it actually makes me look more womanly if that makes sense. One of the sales people told me that tall and skinny people actually don't look as good in that style, because they tend not to have defined waists.

I'd have totally gone shopping by myself and I was actually tempted to do it a couple of times because I felt bad about dragging my mom and best friend to all my appointments, and my mom started annoying me haha :P. But she really wanted to come along to all of them. But you do get a good gauge of what looks good on you once you start trying them on

@@tygrrlily - Yeah I love this dress. I also have bigger hips and I was hoping to hide them somewhat or at least not emphasize them so much. I was hoping the little flower on that dress would camouflage the hips somehow. I am glad to hear that the dress doesn't look as flattering on tall and slim hahaha missus in the picture looks like a size -0. I am usually a size 10 in normal clothes. I have to try this dress on. Hopefully it flatters. Fingers crossed but if not I am sure to find something lace that would flatter.

Trying the attachment again.

Haha, this is what I'm saying, why do people do this??

The dress is beautiful, try it on for sure!

I actually have to say (and I haven't said this out loud to anyone yet) that I wish I hadn't gone shopping with my friend for the second round, I ended up bying a dress that wasn't my fav because she said the one I ended up buying looked better on me. Great input, but at the end of the day, I want to wear a dress that I love, not one that everyone else loves. I like my dress, it was a close second, but I still think about the other one... it makes me feel like I'm cheating on the dress I bought, lol.

haha yeah that's the other problem too with going with other people. they have their own input on what they like themselves. I don't think they actually think about your style and what you like. I think it's mostly what their tastes are. So yeah going by myself seems like the right choice.

I will definitely have to try that dress on. As soon as I seen it online, It just stood out. No others have done that.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
