Newbie - Cabo And Cancun?

So I'm using 2014 and 2015 to plan and budget for a DW in either Cabo or Cancun.

We are doing a DW to cut the guestlist and anticipate 50 guests max? I'm not into lavish or expensive things, I just want to be married by the water and be able to make the wedding as finanically feasible for guests as possible.

Our priorities include getting married on the beach or looking out into the beach, family friendly and more on the quiet relaxing than party type atmosphere. I don't see an issue with staying at a resort for the time we're there for relaxation but would like to be somewhere where venturing out for expeditions won't be difficult. We're outdoorsy people and enjoy things like horseback riding, zip lining, etc.

Any tips or suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Welcome to the site and congrats! There is definitely no shortage of information here, and you'll find the brides, both past and present, very willing to share ideas and tips!

You present 2 very different markets in terms of destination weddings. Firstly, the site owner Tammy is a Cabo bride so she would be a good source of info. A large number of brides on the site are heading to Mexico, so again tons of info.

I would highly recommend reading the resort reviews to see what past brides have experienced. That's a good way to see what the resort could offer. Otherwise, it's research! I know you'll get recommendations from other brides but it will boil down to what you want and like. Cancun is definitely a party city, and some people will stay away from Cancun for that reason.

I would also definitely recommend a travel agent! First of all it will make life easier for you, and for your guests. As well a travel agent will be the best person to help with suggestions for resorts and also to let you know if the resort has any promos available that will benefit you and your group. you don't say if you're in the US or Canada but the site owners - Wright Travel are destination wedding specialists and award winners with a couple of the chains of resorts. They have a wealth of knowledge that I'm sure will be a benefit to you. There is a contact form to reach out to them on this site. As well, they are running a series of webinars for several different resort chains that are attended by both a TA from Wright Travel and a rep from the resort. That may be something else for you to look into. They are run on Saturdays over the next few weeks and you can sign up on the site.

Good luck and happy planning!

definitely get a travel agent - they will help you narrow down your choices! @ is a Cabo bride, and Wright Travel Agency's TA's are DW experts. Tons of help there. You can contact WTA using this form.

We debated between Cabo & Cancun. In the end we decided that we wanted to be able to swim in the ocean, which (we were told) you can't really do in Cabo. Gorgeous beaches, gorgeous sunsets, but too cold to be in. Ironically, the resort we chose doesn't have the best beaches (a bit rocky, to say the least), but at least we could still get in the water!

Either way you'll love it. There are tons of excursions in Cancun/Riviera Maya - water-based (snorkel/scuba) or adventure based (zip lines, ATV).

Good luck & happy planning!

I have been to both regions several time and in the end, for us- the selection of the quality AI resorts we were looking for, swayed us to Cancun region vs. Cabo. The beaches and proximity was originally very attractive for Cabo- but there is just soooo much more to choose from for 5 star, family friendly and modern AI over on the otherside. Since we will have several families with kids- the undertow also was a negative in Cabo because it's hard to convince kids they can't go in the ocean when it's right there! (But it really isn't swimable in most areas)

@@DianaDT We might be a little biased since we live and work here in Cancun but we think the Riviera Maya still has some of the most gorgeous beaches and incredible beaches around...perfect of course for destination weddings! There are many resort options for all types of budgets and TONS of awesome day trips and activities in the area (swimming in cenotes, zip lining, snorkelling, shopping etc.)

And @@acw271011 is right...working with a travel agent is usually the best route to go. Just a reminder when you're choosing a resort to also inquire ahead of time about their policy regarding outside vendors so you'll have the flexibility to hire professional vendors for your big day without restrictions.

All the best and happy planning! :)

@@DianaDT - a travel agent was a big help for me! Have you stayed at AM Resorts before? They have Dreams, Secrets, Now, and something else, anyway, they are gorgeous. Good luck!

We considered both as well, but we ultimately went with Cancun because there are more options we thought for guests that want to get off resort. Also, our TA told us the beaches in the Cancun/Riviera area are nicer/less rocky than the Cabo ones. Finally, it was the selection of hotels that did it for us

Good luck with your planning!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
