What Type Of Wedding Dress For A December Wedding In Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I'm hoping some of you will have some advice for me. My fiance and I are starting to plan a destination wedding for mid December 2014 in Cancun Mexico.

I started dress shopping but i'm having trouble deciding what type of dress I should get. I know for destination weddings, they usually suggest having a simpler dress out of a lightweight, breathable fabric without a train. Problem is all the dresses I LOVE and want to wear on my wedding day are mermaid/fit and flare styles with BIG trains. Any advice about if I will be way too hot wearing this type of dress, or if I should go for something simpler? We are probably going to have the ceremony in a gazebo and the reception on a terrace or pool deck. Also, we're planning for December in Cancun which is cooler. The weather forecast says the average is 28 C (82 F) during the days and 20 (68 F) in the night times which doesn't sound too hot at all - it sounds like what our summers here in Toronto are.

Any advice would be great!

Hi! Congratulations!! I would say go with what you love. If that's a mermaid dress then go for it! I'm getting married in October and I'm going with a fit and flare because it's what felt right! :)

I think you should wear whatever you want to wear! Having said that, yes, you definitely want to be comfortable especially for something as important as your wedding day. I don't think a train would be that much of an issue if you are able to bustle it. That makes it easy to get around after your ceremony and pictures. But a nice train always looks nice in photos. As to weather in December, I'm also in the Toronto area so am familiar with what our summers can be (hot!!) Mexico weather is wonderful, and you don't get the humidity in December that you get during the summer months. I think you'll find its quite comfortable, but it can also be very warm. You don't want a great big heavy dress definitely. Anything in chiffon, or organza would be comfortable, or some of the new light satins would also work. I think if you don't have a ton of crinoline, you'll be more comfortable. Mermaid and trumpet styles are very popular now and I say if you have the figure to wear one, go for it!!! If you go to a bridal salon, I'm sure the store clerks would be more than happy to help you out with styles that will work for a destination wedding if you tell them that's what you need, as well as a dress that will travel well.

Just my humble opinion. Good luck and happy planning!!

This is very helpful so far! Thank you

I think I will definitely take on the advice of the sales assistants and maybe try to find the shape and style I love in a more lightweight fabric. I'll want to do pics on the beach too and the bustle idea to get around is great

I say so with what you like! It's your day so do what makes you happy!

Another thing to consider is how to get your dress on the plane. I have heard of some problems getting the dress on the plane. Just something to keep in mind!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
