Hi Clarissa,

I was wondering the same thing, my wedding will be in April of 2015 and when we started looking recently, we found that there are already a bunch of resorts that are booked for our date so I started to get worried!  But some DW checklists say start 12-8 months out, so I thought I was early.  Love to hear from experienced destination wedding girls to see what the plan should be!

Congrats and best of luck with your planning!

I started planning my wedding in May of 2013 (engaged December 2012) and I'm still 7 months away from my wedding date.  It's never too early to start planning it will help you stay organized and get every question you want answered especially from the resort wedding planner.  Plus you can work on projects throughout the year and spread the cost as well.  It can get stressful planning sometimes so I like to take some days or weeks off in between so the earlier you start the more time you have to finish stuff and the closer you get to your date you'll be set with all the details and just enjoy the moment.  Welcome to the board!! :)

Also the sooner you send out Save the dates and get that info to your guests the better. Trust me we sent out our save the dates a 15 months ahead of our wedding date and our guests appreciated the advanced notice.  Since we gave them so much time to think about it and save up we are getting more people booking that I had anticipated.

Hi Clarissa,

My wedding is May of 2015 always. Where are you getting married? Back to your question lol I started planning our wedding summer of 2013 lol I know but I am not a last minute person where we have a young daughter and there will be lots to do with with getting her ready for the big day. We have out resorts narrowed down to our top 3 just waiting to hear back from travel agents to book we are looking for the best price for our guest so with luck we will book at the lastest end of April this year. Other then that you can start looking at invites and the save the dates (we have our done will just plug the date and place  in once we book ) but besides planning things like favors, decorations, invites, dress picking, you really need to wait until you book so you have a set date it seems like forever for me I cant wait to book so i can feel like im getting stuff done. So i would start looking at resorts and whatnot the pros and cons look at booking sooner then later to avoid disappointment with dates. Hope this helps!

Not at all! Many of the resorts have their dates book up very quickly, so if you have a specific date in mind, best to inquire early! Even with group rates and room blocks, certain times of the year are more popular than others and the resorts fill quickly! Plus of course you need time to use the BDW site to help you out with tips and ideas, whether for DIY, colour advice, photographers, other vendors. So being ahead of the game is always good!

Good luck and happy planning!!

Definitely not too early to start planning! I started early, just over a year out (but had a lot of research already done by the time I was allowed to officially start planning) lol! I am so glad I started planning early as I did a lot of DIY stuff and it takes time and patience to do this. Had I waited last minute I know I wouldn't have nearly as much done! Now the last two months coming up to the wedding I am pretty stress free... enjoying the time and tying up loose ends, not worrying or stressing over things. Not to mention things to book up quickly so I'd recommend picking a resort and date, and if photography is important also booking them early would be a good thing to do. Also an overall theme/colour scheme for the wedding. I found it took a while for everything in that department to come together, but it makes it easier if you have a good idea cause then you can tie everything together :) Good luck and congratulations!

Hi there -

Welcome & I'm on "Team NOT Too Early", as a fellow 2015 wedding planner who's been on here since November. As @@acw271011 & @@csho mentioned, resorts book fast so the earlier you plan the better.  I had this happen to me with one of the properties we are looking at, and we were more than 12 months out.

@@kirab22 is also right about the rates. We are currently trying to lock down at 2014 rates and some of the resorts offer nice discounts for early booking.

Happy planning!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
