Vellum bag directions (luminarias, favors, gift bags, etc.)

Recommended Posts

Vellum Bag Directions:

Some of us have been trying to make our own luminarias. I thought, heck- if we're going to make them, why not just make the whole bag (MARTHA ALERT!) These bags also could be used for favors, gift bags, etc. Anyway, I found these pretty simple directions, I'll post the results when I get a chance to try it...

VELLUM BAG

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR BAG:

  • 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of transparent vellum
  • Something rectangle or square to fold vellum around (i.e. two medium stamps taped together)
  • Tape runner or double sided tape
These first 3 items are all you need to make the bags- the next 3 items are for if you plan to decorate the bag...
  • Hole punch
  • 1 yard ribbon of your choice (organdy and sheers look beautiful with this vellum)
  • Decorative scissors (optional)

1. (Optional) Stamp and emboss an 8 1/2†x 11†sheet of transparent vellum as desired. This can be an all over pattern or one main design in the center of the page. Or, just use decorated vellum!

2. Wrap the entire sheet, length wise, around something rectangular or square, leaving enough space so that the two edges can be secured together.

3. Run a line of double-sided tape down one seam and stick two sides together.

4. Fold the bottom of the bag like you would wrap a package. Secure folded edges with double-sided tape or tape runner.

5. Pull the object that the paper is wrapped around out of the bag.

Narrow sides can be creased like a paper sack or left smooth. To crease sides, simply fold center of the side in until two edges meet. Crease all three edges, 2 sides and center point. Have a brown paper sack near by to use as a model.

6. (Optional) Open end of sack can be trimmed with decorative scissors or left straight. Fill with goodies and fold over. Punch two holes in center of folded over part about 1/2†– 1†down. Thread ribbon through holes. Tie ribbon in a bow or knot.

So I tried making these today, a little harder than it looks. However, I figured out a better way than their directions. If anyone actually wants to make these, let me know and I'll post how I did mine.

They ended up pretty small, although only using an 8x11 sheet of paper, I don't know what I was expecting. They are about 2x3x5. After making about 4, I got pretty quick at it, but they do take some patience. Jeff & I did decide we like this size for our individual place settings, so I guess I'll be making a bunch. We're still messing around with different paper and fonts for the monograms but I've got a couple months left to figure it out.

Here are some sample pics, sorry they're a little blurry, I forgot to change the setting on my camera:

I did 2 bags made of plain white paper with a monogram printed on an additional sheet of thick vellum, attached with double stick tape. The middle bag is made out of a single piece of fancy vellum.

Here's a closer view (the vellum used for the monogram one is very thick. I would recommend using something thinner so the light shines through better)

I used a regular Jello box just to give some size perspective (they're pretty small):

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
