We're getting married February 8th (next weekend!!) and we're waiting until May to have our AHR which will probably just be a casual party at our home with catered food, beer and wine! :)

We are doing ours 3 months after our actual wedding.  This is partly due to other weddings and commitments, but I like that we should have our video and pictures back by then to display.

We got married Oct 20th in Jamaica and had our AHR on Nov 5th so 2 weeks. It was actually easy peezy. The restaurant we worked with were fantastic and a huge help so no stress there at all. We sent out the invites before we even left to get married because we needed an idea of the count for dinner. I'm on the side of not waiting too long after your wedding but that's just me. I know the winter makes it difficult plus holidays, etc. And we had a local photographer because I wanted the family pics that we missed out on in Jamaica, since it was just the 2 of us when we got married.

I had the same question (how long is too long?)  I think a lot of brides are right that with a destination wedding there are really no rules or expectations.  We're thinking of getting married in late November (we're hoping for November 24, 2015) and we were thinking of having an AHR for those who can't make it to the wedding.  Our wedding would be so close to the holiday season I don't want to further inconvenience our guests and we also want to wait till we get our wedding video and pictures.

We were initially thinking about having an engagement party instead of an AHR so those that can't go can feel like they are a part of something and to serve as an ice breaker for our families and friends.  The con against our engagement party is the time it takes to plan and the cost (we're both students till the end of summer).  Also we think we'd be in a better financial spot in 2015 which has greatly influenced our decision.

I think we are going to decide to wait a bit to do our AHR.  Thanks for all the feedback and thanks for starting this thread.  It's been so helpful seeing what other brides are doing and realizing that I'm not on my own with my thoughts and questions.  My fiancee and I are the only couple in both our families having a DW in lieu of a traditional one.

@@amarie4713 we're thinking of maybe having our at home reception after the holidays, probably in late February.  It gives us time to hopefully get our wedding video and pictures.  But most importantly it gives us enough time to save up for the AHR.  Most of the brides on the thread seem to be doing it about 3 months after the actual wedding so I thought that we might do the same too.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
