Oh Michelle, you are TOTALLY not alone. I too was not a fan of shopping for my dress. The first few times I went shopping, I hated it and was depressed afterwards. My mom kept pressing me to visit different salons and try on different dresses, which I did. All the dress styles that I really liked, looked terrible on me. That was really frustrating. But then after trying on a lot of different styles, I finally found a bunch that I really liked and the ONE that I loved. You'll get more into it when you find styles that suit you better. Remember, it's not about what the dress looks like on the hanger, it about what it looks like on you. What designers & styles have you looked at?

I picture you in something simple and flowy (not poofy or too traditional.) Can you post pics of what you're thinking about?

Dress shopping was hard. Especially since a lot of the dresses I thought looked great on the hanger looked horrible on me.

I agree with Jen. What type of dress are you looking for? Maybe you have a designer you like. Find a store that carries them and start there. I loved Maggie dresses so that's what I did. I went to a store that had a lot of Maggie dresses and it was really easy after that. I still haven't technically had my dress on. I saw it online, fell in love and tried on similiar dresses before I ordered it. I couldn't find anything I loved more, so I ordered the dress I saw online. It should be here soon so I can't wait to finally try it on!

Good luck. Just be patient. It's not the worst thing you will have to go through. Kids & labor come next. lol

try going to a nordstrom or a neiman marcus or some other upscale department store so you don't feel so weird in a bridal salon. that's what i did... i bought a gorgeous calvin klein bridal dress in nordstrom instead of going to a place like david's bridal. it's a much more low key experience.

Michelle I felt the same way. I didn't get excited until I found something I liked, actually, until I tried on the veil! But honestly, I went looking about 3 times alone because I just wanted to get it over with quick.

Odd because I always thought that this would be the best part!

Well about a month ago, I tore out a few I liked from the bridal magazines but this visit was impromtu so I didn't have them with me or anything. I am going to go through them and maybe make an appointment at a salon for this weekend while it's still somewhat fresh in my mind and I have a little bit of extra time. I am going by myself though this time i think....

The thing is that I like to try stuff on without a sales person breathing down my neck...I feel to rushed to decide if I like it or not and if I stare at myself too long in it I feel like I'm being weird and taking too long.

I didn't know that nordstrom had bridal gowns in their stores. i thought only online? I wonder if all the stores have them? I will try and find some online and show you guys.

Definately something simple Jen. Nothing too traditional and nothing too low cut and nothing too form fitting (big hips).

You are too funny! We all feel that way I think. I actually was very surprised with the dress I picked b/c it was TOTALLY different than what I envisioned wearing. You will find the perfect dress and will be so relieved!!!bunny_4.gif

I absolutely agree! At first I felt kind of bad and would try on things that the sales girls would bring ... but then, I quickly got used to saying - ummm... no it's just not me. I went to 5 different places and was starting to get depressed about the whole thing! But - once I tried on the dress I eventually bought - I knew it was the one. I also loved the little shop that I found it in ... they were very low-key, no appointments, down-to-earth and fun.

Do you know what kind of dress you're looking for?

Hang in there ... you'll find it!

I'm with you. In retrospect dress shopping was the worst part about wedding planning for me. I went alone and still hated it. I tried on 3 dresses at one shop and picked one of those the same day - the first and last day I looked for a dress. It fit the occasion, wasn't too formal or too casual, and it wasn't too expensive. That was it.

I didn't get the feeling that this is the dress I have been waiting my whole life for, but then again I was never the type of girl to fantasize about my wedding as a kid. I loved my dress and am glad I opted to get a corset back wedding dress rather than the white sundress I swore I would wear. But I didn't put a lot of stock into trying on dress after dress until I felt like I thought I was supposed to feel.

Go with your instincts and it will work out.

BTW, if you call Nordstrom's they'll tell you which locations have the bridal salon in store, but beware - Nordie's salespeople like to get in the fitting room with you too...lol

    • I have stayed at Dreams La Romana and Dreams Dominicus.  The two resorts are very different in style and decor. A few comparison points are below and fact sheets are attached for both.   Both resorts are approx 45 minutes from Punta Cana airport, close proximity to Saona Island, Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon. Top championship golf courses in the Caribbean are just minutes away including Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, The Links and La Estancia – all designed by world-famous Pete Dye. Restaurants are similar at both resorts.  Both offer the Explorers Club for Kids.  Dreams Dominicus  Brand new resort and in 2016 488 rooms (however additional construction was underway) More contemporary style & decor Good beach area Rooms were very nice Preferred Club located in main lobby and adjacent to main pool & beach front Food was good Center plaza area with nighttime entertainment Main lobby is small, but outdoor bar off lobby is nice Dreams La Romana Originally built in 2003 & opened as Dreams La Romana in 2008 756 rooms Recently renovated and new preferred club adults only lounge & pool added  Rooms are more traditional Caribbean decor Grounds are very lush and tropical Good beach area food was good    Dreams Dominicus fact sheet.pdf Dreams La Romana fact sheet.pdf
    • My sister has done it but with the destination wedding, only super close family members and friends came since it was expensive and farther. It was great though.
