How did/will you modernize your wedding ceremony?

Recommended Posts

My fiance' and I are working on our ceremony plans. We are keeping it fairly traditional but would like to modernize and break the mold a little bit.

So I was curious...what non-traditional items were/will be present in your wedding ceremony? And was the result what you expected or were/ may they be "better in theory"?

I'm interested in the same thing!  Thanks for posting this!  One thing we are doing (which might not be what you are thinking) is instead of a sand ceremony, we are going to do the love letters that you lock in the wine box.  It's more representative of us :)

we skipped the unity ceremony - no candles or sand ceremony. just wasn't "us". we also intentionally left out the "who gives this woman" - my husband & I lived together for a few years before we got married. I had my father walk me down and hand me off to my husband. Both worked out well!

our ceremony was not religious at all, because that isn't us either. it was very much focused on the reality of marriage - hard work, joining together, working through the good and the bad, choosing to be together, etc.

we did have a friend do a reading for us.

we did the traditional "echo" vows, but also said our own vows before that (promises to each other). it was very special and meaningful to both of us.

so all in all, we really customized the ceremony to fit who we are, and what our relationship is. It was perfect (for us)!

My FI and I are having our good friend (who actually set us up) officiate the ceremony, which is kind of my favorite part of the ceremony. We're also having the ceremony super short, b/c we're not keen on being the center of attention for a long time, and we might do a shot of tequila with everyone after we say I do- have ushers pass out shots and just have one all together, since we are getting married in Cabo. We're obviously not that traditional to begin with. :)

@flor628, that's so romantic, to have the person who set you up, marry you! I love the idea of doing the Tequila shots to get everyone loosened up. Congratulations on your engagement, you're all going to have such a good time!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
